Anyone else ventured into this one. Shock Weirder and weirder. Think I'm halfway through. Couldn't watch any of the violent bits, not an easy programme to view.

Just finished it. At least there was a satisfactory ending! I couldn't watch the video bits and am ashamed to say that I was more devastated about the kittens than about the human victim. [flbush]

Although the geeks were congratulating themselves on a success (and I don't deny they provided a lot of evidence to the various police forces), I did wonder if they'd had any other, similar projects that hadn't come to anything because they were fooled by photoshopping or other hoax practices.

RogersVideo · 19/12/2019 01:49

I was really shocked when I started watching this because I had actually seen the vacuum sealed kitten video years ago. I don't mind morbid videos, but this one had always stayed with me as one of the more unsettling videos I had watched. Years later I still think about it.

This series was massive closure! It's terrible that he killed more animals and a person. I'm glad to know what happened though, who this terrible person was and that they are no longer free.

His mom is in serious denial...

JeansNTees · 19/12/2019 08:10

@Optimist1 Poor Jun Lin, think he was "othered" quite a bit due to being Chinese, gay, and an older student at 33. And yet he was just a human seeking love and a fresh new start with more freedom to marry a man rather than a woman, as he was apparently being pressured to do back in China. I haven't finished the programme yet but hope that they show Jun Lin/Justin in a sympathetic light and spend time on his life story since they have devoted so much to Luka's.

Thanks for the links, @JeansNTees . I did feel huge sadness and disgust for the fate of Jun Lin. The end of the programme will probably disappoint you in terms of focus on him.

passthebucky · 22/12/2019 00:25

Just finished the second episode. Its shocking to say the least, I could not watch the animal stuff and I'm not even that much of an animal lover but Jesus Christ I was watching through my fingers Confused

PenelopeFlintstone · 22/12/2019 00:31

I watched it but had been warned so I just skipped all the videos. I was on my laptop and it was easy to click ahead past them.

MissLadyM · 22/12/2019 01:13

Can we have a trigger warning for this please? I regret clicking on this and have no desire to know about such a revolting programme

JeansNTees · 22/12/2019 09:32

I'll try @MissLadyM and I agree that it is revolting. What is scariest is that people like this exist and have a huge viewing platform in the age of the internet and Netflix. I regret watching it.

OK I've asked for the title to be changed and for the record, I don't recommend this programme. What is the point in dramatising this crap when other sociopaths might like it and get ideas? There is no closure for the family, in fact the dad mentioned feeling shame about his gay son so I just feel that this programme didn't really add anything positive to the world.

passthebucky · 22/12/2019 13:52

I've just finished watching it all and for me it's been the best thing in Netflix for a while. Loved it

Bits19822 · 22/12/2019 14:13

Whoever at Netflix who came up with the idea for this documentary should get a raise. People are losing their mind over it. Of course Netflix knew this would happen, that is why the trailer was featured the first day, so people would see it, go batshit over it and demand the trailer be taken down. Netflix, of course, took the trailer down, as I'm sure was always the plan. As each day passes, people become more and more crazed about it, the hype continues to grow, and Netflix is being talked about more in the past couple days then they have all year! There are petitions floating around, demanding Netflix remove it, people are posting they can't sleep after watching it, they are screaming about Netflix giving Luka Magnotta more attention to his crimes. Yes, Luka Magnotta is getting lots of attention -- from all the people making a huge fuss over it. If everyone just ignored it, "Don't F* with Cats" would just another of the many documentaries on Netflix. Brilliant marketing move.

BrotherlyLove · 22/12/2019 14:18

Finished this last night, glad the videos were edited other wise I couldn't have watched. What a psycho.
Something about the geeks and their cronies was uncomfortable too.

BlackCatFan · 22/12/2019 22:57

Just watched the first episode and wish I hadn't 😔 yes it should come with a warning. I watched it after reading a perfectly innocent review in the Guardian... 🤷‍♀️

Don't watch if you're a cat lover.

Pabs1914 · 23/12/2019 01:10

Homophobia is a troublesome thing.

Greysparkles · 23/12/2019 01:42

Don't you find it disturbing though, the way people are more outraged and upset about the cat video than the video of Jun lin being murdered.

TRIGGER

Especially as the murder video was so disgustingly vile, showing necrophilia, mutilation and his playing with a decapitated head in the bath. The fact that the baudi woman had to turn off the cat video but seemed to have to problem with Jun lin getting stabbed to death shows how we as a society have become so used to seeing such horrific things done against our fellow humans.

I'm sorry but there should be more outrage, or at least equal, for this video as well. He was a human being and the documentary didn't really delve into who he was. Which is a shame. As Jun lin should be remembered.

And lukas mother. I just pity the woman

BlackCatFan · 23/12/2019 09:33

I haven't read the full thread because I'm interested in the story so may come back to it. I just want to ask though - is the cat cruelty footage in the first episode only? Thanks

JeansNTees · 23/12/2019 09:40

@BlackCatFan no, I think there is more in 2nd and possibly 3rd episodes? 3 cat murders, 1 horrific human murder, 1 puppy murder.

OP posts:
JeansNTees · 23/12/2019 09:44

@Greysparkles I agree 100%. But don't you think that is the way society is headed? On our town's Facebook we have hugely more likes & shares for posts about missing pets than missing teenagers or adults. We've had more than one post where someone has said they've been bitten by a dog and the owners have come on to justify why their dogs attacked - and had people back them up! The victims have been shouted at online for jogging in the woods, or not stopping when they see a dog, or not understanding that a yellow vest on the dog means it is anxious and might bite a leg off. Disgusting.

But I do think that xenophobia comes into this programme too.

I have no sympathy for Luka's mum. His dad said in court that she was controlling, drank too much, and insisted on homeschooling the kids. They were also raised with an abusive grandparent when she couldn't look after them. What a terrible situation, especially as the dad is an alcoholic with schizophrenia. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2816267/Accused-Canada-dismemberment-trial-troubled-childhood-father-says.html

OP posts:
QueenOfOversharing · 23/12/2019 09:51

I just watched this - it's absolutely awful what he did. I couldn't get my head round him preening in front of mirrors after committing such heinous acts. And all for attention.

The part about the online sleuths was fascinating - but I do wonder what possesses someone to spend so much time trying to solve crimes, and I wonder if they would have done so if the first video was of the murder, rather than the cats.

It was very weird how the guy when he met "Baudi" said she wouldn't have been able to do it without him, but said he would have been.

It's the most disturbing thing I think I've seen - I couldn't watch any of the videos, even with them being edited.

We got as far as the first video and turned it off. Too awful to contemplate.

QueenOfOversharing · 28/12/2019 23:24

@Francesthemute good point! They didn't resolve that.

Sh0na · 29/12/2019 21:47

I watched this, it was gripping alright. I don't know if I felt complicit for having watched it though as the guy was a complete narcissist long before the facegroup existed. He'd already constructed different aliases and alibis and he is in prison now.

Dryshampooagaintoday · 29/12/2019 21:50

I went into the show thinking it was going to light hearted! I was so wrong! So gripping though! I also would like to see how well John Green and Baudi would do at solving another case!
