We just binge watched this and found it very disturbing. I agree that Deanna / John and the rest of the vigilantes shouldn't blame themselves for being complicit - this series of criminal acts and the murder of Jun Lin was planned way before they even got involved. The instruction of the lawyer who looked like Michael Douglas 18 months prior, the various names used to create fake accounts and then comment / like comments & films. The photos used - those of the victims of the Moors Murderers etc - it was meticulously planned and he was just waiting to play with interested parties like a cat with a mouse.
Strangely, I didn't remember anything about him, other than the foot arriving in the post, and the fact that somebody suggested that the media stop talking about the killer and only talk about Jun Lin. Until this documentary therefore, I have never heard of him, only his victim.
His mother is seriously deluded. And the photo they kept panning in on of him with his arms wrapped around her neck and his hand on her face was unsettling. If anyone, she was complicit as she has enabled and facilitated his behaviour and is now in denial - allowing him to continue fuelling his narcissistic ego in her eyes.
It certainly made for interesting viewing. I think the police should learn from this that they need to work more closely with computer hackers / geeks / data analysts like Deanna and John to further certain cases / investigations.
Insofar as the Montreal police officer was concerned, I don't feel she was dopey, but certainly it was and still remains an absolutely shocking case for her to have been leading. I feel that the detective (who led him out of the plane and then interviewed him) did a sterling job in not losing his rag with him! And I think the Internet cafe owner needs a medal.
