A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.)

Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.
Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Not Korean but just try it

Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Before We Get Married (Viki - Taiwanese)
Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)
Put Your Head on My Shoulder (Netflix - Chinese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

CLOY us shaping up to be a corker... Ticking all the good kdrama boxes! Great ML & FL... Great secondary characters... Bad baddies... Pacey and plot got lots going on!. Heading into ep4 now... 👍👍👍😍❤️

bettys · 29/12/2019 23:00

I've just watched The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos (film, dramafast) and it was ok, not outstanding in spite of Park Morgan and Ma Deong Seok (and the ex-fiance from Another Miss Oh as a baddie). I'd give it a 4.

Agree with your appraisal of The Negotiation boatyard.

bettys · 29/12/2019 23:02

Have also shuffled The Fiery Priest (jury's out) and Dr Prisoner (could be good) on dramafast. Will give them interim scores

bettys · 29/12/2019 23:03

Meant to add The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos was a bit quite violent and got a bit urrgghh at times

bettys · 29/12/2019 23:11

hello I've added the films & scores to the spreadsheet at the bottom Smile

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 29/12/2019 23:25

Ooh ep 6 of CLOY was excellent! Taking the White Truck of Doom to another level.
Loved Captain Ri looking murderous at 2ML in the lift.
My Dad didn't watch in the end 😂.
I'm going to watch some more Secret Garden on my phone in bed now. Don't want to say goodnight to Hyun Bin yet 😍

boatyardblues · 29/12/2019 23:29

Don't want to say goodnight to Hyun Bin yet

Ditto. I’m still plodding my way through Alhambra for shallow and obvious reasons (SAOR). HB’s cheekbones and jawline are so frickin’ angular he looks like Max Headroom or Kryten, but the sexy version. 😂

OP posts:
bettys · 29/12/2019 23:37

Max Headroom!!🤣🤣 I still have that on VHS somewhere 😎

bettys · 29/12/2019 23:40

Don't want to say goodnight to Hyun Bin yet

Me neither...just checking out Rampant and Seo Hye-Jin pops up in that as well...🤨

helloswellow · 30/12/2019 08:53

I've sorted the spreadsheet!

My plan for finishing 2019 series has gone out the window. I've had some family visit and we've been watching guilty pleasure Japanese high school movies. We must have watched about 8 in three days! Every single one is the exact same story but we keep watching them. We'll need a rescue team if we fall much deeper into this hole!

bettys · 30/12/2019 09:04

hello is an intervention required?? (Pssst let me know if there are any good ones with Dori Sakurada in)

King of Mask Singer which always features on Soompi-The-Font-of-All-Real-Journalism is coming to ITV! Called The Masked Singer! On January 4th! With Jonathan Woss!
(Spot the Soompi-style exclamation marks)

bettys · 30/12/2019 09:06

I'm trying to watch at least an episode or so of the unscored dramas but keep getting Hyun-ed and having to refresh my memory of his cheekbones.

bettys · 30/12/2019 09:17

Coming to next week on Netflix:

The Secret Life of My Secretary
The Fiery Priest
Wok of Love
Still 17
The Last Empress
Reunited Worlds
Haechi

These were on Viki except for The Fiery Priest which had great reviews and was a huge hit. The Last Empress is huge fun too as it is so bonkers.

boatyardblues · 30/12/2019 10:27

I'm trying to watch at least an episode or so of the unscored dramas but keep getting Hyun-ed and having to refresh my memory of his cheekbones.

Memories of Alhambra should really be called Memories of Hyun Bin, because he’s the only reason I’m still watching. Even the love story is lame - HB and PSH gave about as much chemistry as a rock and a puddle. 🤷‍♂️

Interesting to see all those shows coming to Netflix. That US article Bea linked to talked about Netflix starting to aggressively pursue Korean content. I hope they don’t kill off Viki, because I much prefer their subtitling. Also, DH bought me a 12 month subscription for Xmas. I am almost annoyed enough about Netflix moving to a serialised model for kdrama to email feedback in & tell them to knock it on the head.

helloswellow · 30/12/2019 10:40

Netflix have jumped on the kdrama bandwagon but miss the point of Korean dramas being a one and done thing. Hopefully they correct this going forward. I appreciate it can work in certain cases, mostly with web drama style pieces but I prefer my dramas to end after 16/20 episodes and that's that.

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 30/12/2019 15:21

I'd join you in a strongly worded email Boatyard. It's not on for Netflix to ruin kdramas just to get another series out of them.

Today's Hyun Bin news - in Secret Garden I've got up to the body swapping bit. I'm finding it a bit cringy so I've been skipping ahead.
Also I've got DH and DS to agree to go to the Korean bar near us for a couple of drinks and some snacks tomorrow. 👍

bettys · 30/12/2019 15:54

I’d also join in with a strongly worded email - Vagabond is a perfect example of ruining a drama by leaving it open to a 2nd series. Kingdom & My First First Love are examples of splitting a perfectly good drama in half with their silly 8 episode runs 😡😡

Today’s Hyun Bin news: I have watched Rampant (film dramafast) which is basically Kingdom but gets extra points for Hyun Bin being all Joseon vampire killer Prince in robes with a ginormous sword and a cheeky grin.
‘If I come back with an army will you come to Qin with me?’ Oh yes please 😍

bettys · 30/12/2019 15:56

TheGirl well done with starting to assimilate your DH & DS 😉👍

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 30/12/2019 16:11

Ooh Rampant sounds great bettys 😁

boatyardblues · 30/12/2019 16:18

I love how we’ve all completely lost the plot over Hyun Bin. And yet.... Rampant sounds like a lot of fun.

OP posts:
bettys · 30/12/2019 16:28

It’s your basic Joseon zombie slasher really but HB adds a touch of class. He even looks good in those net hairpiece thingies they wear. That’s the advantage of good bone structure 😉 (and dimples)

boatyardblues · 30/12/2019 17:37

I started watching it - Hyun Bin does good louche Joseon prince swagger. Sadly, I paused to go to the loo and put the rice cooker on, so now I can’t get it back to where I left off. 😡

OP posts:
bettys · 30/12/2019 18:02

That's happened to me too. I wish Viki & Netflix would get more films

Bea · 30/12/2019 18:07

Gah! Netflix! One of the things I love kdramas so much is the "done and dusted" format! Stupid Netflix! 🤬
Thoroughly enjoying CLOY... trying to eek it out so I don't have to keep waiting (don't think I'll do that well to be honest!) I've got 2 eps lined up to peruse at my leisure! 😁

boatyardblues · 30/12/2019 18:26

Oh Bea, just watch them so we can compare notes!
