A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.)

Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.
Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Not Korean but just try it

Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Before We Get Married (Viki - Taiwanese)
Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)
Put Your Head on My Shoulder (Netflix - Chinese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I’m giving My Love from a Star another go. I still find the shower scenes where ML is wearing a towel hysterical. It’s hard to overlook that kind of stupidity. Just film with a half height partition in the bathroom set! 🤦‍♀️

Ahhhh! Love from a star!... I love it! 😂

100 days is turning out to be quite gripping! And very very sweet! X

bettys · 11/01/2020 00:52

Beai am thoroughly enjoying 100 Days.! I thought I knew where the plot was going but it keeps adding bits in that I wasn’t expecting!

bettys · 11/01/2020 00:54

🤣 Sign of a good binge-er I’ve an early start tomorrow I really need a 🥾🍑

boatyardblues · 11/01/2020 00:55

Woo hoo! Look at meeeee!!.... No one to peachy boot kick me!.... 😂😂😂😁😁😁😁😁

bettys · 11/01/2020 07:52

Crikey where are you up to Bea? I’m only on episode 4

AesopsMables · 11/01/2020 08:41

Has anyone started Wok of love yet? Anything with lots of food scenes grabs my attention (apart from Chocolate) I have a whole day tomorrow for nothing but viewing. Looking forward to CLOY !

AesopsMables · 11/01/2020 08:43

Bea - did you go to sleep last night?🤣

boatyardblues · 11/01/2020 09:09

DH just brought me my morning coffee in bed. I’m revelling in a free day, warm duvet and My Love from A Star on my phone. 😄

OP posts:
helloswellow · 11/01/2020 09:11

I'm guessing Bea is still wearing her duvet like a cape watching 100 days. We may need to preform a rescue mission!

I'm at the vets this morning so no viewing until later. I should be back to perfectly settle into CLOY while DS naps.

helloswellow · 11/01/2020 09:17

In case anyone wanted to see the image in my brain. This is Bea in my head, but not a small child obviously!

gingerbiscuitandacuppatea · 11/01/2020 09:36

I've started Something in the rain and was thinking the female lead looks familiar. Turns out she's FL in CLOY so that could be why 🙄. My memory is so poor!

Lots of familiar faces in this. ML from Spring night and it has a very similar feel to it, the pacing of the story, so far. I'm only into episode 2 though.

bettys · 11/01/2020 10:09

Aesops I started Wok of Love last year on Viki as it has two of my favourite MLs - Lovely Eyes Junho and Jang Hyuk but couldn't finish it. I think it was the writing, and also didn't find the FL very engaging. I'll be interested to see what you think.

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 11/01/2020 10:44

Aesops I watched Wok of Love, its ok. It did drag a bit. It has got a talking horse though 🤷‍♀️

bettys · 11/01/2020 10:46

I’m lol ing at Bea under the duvet!!🤣🤣

Bea · 11/01/2020 10:51

Morning all! Was up usual time today!... Hee Hee!...

I got caught up in 100 days... upto Ep9... though tempted to skip a bit... I just want to see the big reveal and the fall out.... but I've got 9 more eps before that happens... it really is very lovely and gentlt though it does have the usual baddies and stuff! However it's got that great secondary characters thing that I love and enjoy watching!!!
So no sitting under a Duvet for me!!!! Up and at 'em!!!!

Wok Of Love... I had to draaaaag myself through it ... purely for the love of watching Lovely Eyes Junho (he is very very lovely Blush) It just took toooooo long getting there and Bettys is right... didn't like the FL and just found it all a little too pleased with itself... It's a great story on paper but just didn't work... Although I liked the 2ML too... so not sure why it didn't sit so well with me...the relationships within the story didn't make sense to me
Food was lovely to watch though and I distinctly remember making a lot of Sweet and Sour Pork whilst watching that one!!! Grin

Ginger as far as I remember... Something In Th Rain and Spring Night was created by the same writers/production etc thus the familiar feel...

BTS Comeback is ON!!!! It's just too exciting and exhausting! They dropped their comeback trailer on Thursday and it got over 19 million views in 24hours! It's epic and Min Yoongi!!!!!! It's just brilliant!.....and something is happenning in London on Tues! (There's A Comeback Schedule Map! - the things they think of.... they really know how to do it in style!!!)

It’s the same writing and directing team. If I recall it’s the same actress playing this FL’s mother, but in a more sympathetic role. The naughty younger sister in ONS is played by FL’s badass colleague in SITR. She gets all the fun parts!

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 11/01/2020 11:31

The indulged younger brother in SITR is green onion/shaggy dog man in Romance ITBB.

As Bea that is superb!!💜💜 Min Yoongi is my bias wrecker 😍 (& Jimin) 💜💜💜

helloswellow · 11/01/2020 15:03

DP has me watching live action versions of animes. Someone save me! He says it's basically the same as watching dramas (except there's no plot or development and way more violence)

boatyardblues · 11/01/2020 15:15

DP has me watching live action versions of animes.

Say what? Is it fans larping and doing homages to their favourites, or are they professional recreations?

In other news, the new thread is up in readiness for this afternoon’s CLOY love-in:

Also, I bought some very expensive frozen grilled unagi in sauce which has been squirrelled away in the freezer for DS2’s birthday dinner in a couple of weeks. Try to imagine something that weighs about the same as a medium sized smoked mackerel fillet but cost £10.50. 😯

OP posts:
bettys · 11/01/2020 15:18

ARE YOU MAD????? CLOY is up!

boatyardblues · 11/01/2020 15:19

I just came back to post the same. 빠리 빠리!!
