Ms Latte’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama Addicts #11)

boatyardblues · 02/12/2019 13:37

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.)

Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.
Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Not Korean but just try it

Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Before We Get Married (Viki - Taiwanese)
Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)
Put Your Head on My Shoulder (Netflix - Chinese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Oh no Aesops I'd have killed DH if he'd brought us a holiday to Korea, as much as is like to go. We haven't had a proper kitchen for over a year as we are supposed to be saving up!!
But I definitely want to see some photos and hear all about it 😁

bettys · 26/12/2019 21:27

Been out to see Rise of Skywalker (gets a thumbs up from the whole family)

Loving the reaction to Aesops fab present!

DH just said: “Was it a one way ticket? I could run to that!” Then DS2 pipped in: “yeah, Mum could find her Korean love.”
Love this!

the Korean beauty ideal is for very slim, flawless, young, beautifully groomed women
The only thing I have going for me is that I am short so I could hoover up the shorter men, on the slim chance they'd be looking for a middle-aged woman Grin

boatyardblues · 26/12/2019 21:32

We all found Rise of Skywalker massively disappointing - went to see it this afternoon. Too noisy, too much CGI, not enough dialogue, plot or building characters we cared about. MIL took her earplugs and slept through it. Grin

If Kylo Ren and Ren had run off to a motel about 25 min in to do something about all that angry pent-up passion in it would have been a much more interesting film.

OP posts:
bettys · 26/12/2019 21:53

Oh - maybe it helps that we saw it in a tiny cinema (only 38 seats) and the sound was fine. We're all fans of Star Wars, it's family tradition to see them when they come out. I actually let out a gasp when I saw a character that hasn't been seen since Return of the Jedi

bettys · 26/12/2019 21:58

But I agree that if Kylo Ren/Ben & Rey had resolved that unresolved passion earlier then there would have been a completely different element added - possibly a kdrama style triangle with Finn Wink

boatyardblues · 26/12/2019 22:06

Indeed. What a wasted opportunity!

boatyardblues · 27/12/2019 00:53

Another score for the 2019 sheet: Doctor John = 6. Nicely done, but it never really got out of 2nd gear. Ji Sung is lovely though. It would have been a 5 with a different ML and FL.

helloswellow · 27/12/2019 07:55

Only a few days left on the spreadsheet! So glad to see Well Intended Love is maintaining its position of worst drama of 2019 and possibly ever!

bettys · 27/12/2019 09:00

I think we should give interim scores for ones that are currently on air eg CLOY or we haven’t finished watching for some reason. It probably won’t change the scoring that much if we amend later

boatyardblues · 27/12/2019 09:14

CLOY is already shaping up to be a gem.

OP posts:
bettys · 27/12/2019 09:32

CLOY gets a 9 so far from me

boatyardblues · 27/12/2019 09:33

Same here, easily a 9.

OP posts:
TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 27/12/2019 10:04

I also agree with a 9 for CLOY.
I've just got 2 eps of Human Rights to go which I should finish tonight. Its been really interesting learning about some of the darker parts of Korean life, but too harrowing to binge. I think the FL is v good in an understated way, except for at the end of ep 12 where she lost it and knocked a man out! 😁 I think it has a good standard of acting for all the minor characters too else I wouldn't be so upset by some of the sad things that happened. I'd imagine scoring it an 8 unless the last 2 episodes descend into ridiculousness. Or poor tying up of storyline.

helloswellow · 27/12/2019 10:23

www.allkpop.com/article/2019/12/kim-woo-bin-pulls-off-stunning-long-hair-in-a-chic-black-and-white-pictorial saw these pictures and questioned whether he really pulled it off. any opinions?

bettys · 27/12/2019 10:56

I think he looks great, & I don't normally like Kim Woo Bin (but I DO like long flopsy hair on a man)

bettys · 27/12/2019 11:14

Here is a list of dramas that are on either Viki or Netflix that no one has scored yet:

  • Bea didn't you watch Clean with Passion for now ?

Best Chicken
Black Dog
Chief of Staff
Clean with Passion for Now
Fates & Furies
Haechi
Legal High
Love is Beautiful, Life is Wonderful
Moments at Eighteen
VIP
The Wind Blows
Laughter in Waikiki 2

helloswellow · 27/12/2019 13:35

I started watching Moments at 18 I stalled a bit but will pick it up before the year ends.

boatyardblues · 27/12/2019 14:17

OK, which of Betty’s list are crackers? I’ve got a guest-free afternoon ahead of me, a box of Lindor within reach and I’m hopped up on painkillers and have a good excuse to rest. Help me out with good suggestions.

OP posts:
bettys · 27/12/2019 14:23

Dunno which are crackers but would be interested to know what Chief of Staff is like, but is political so maybe not right for the combo of painkillers & Lindor 🤣

bettys · 27/12/2019 14:27

I think you need to do a full on boaty shuffle. I’m going to take a look at a couple too, dunno which yet

boatyardblues · 27/12/2019 15:18

I just rewatched all the Hyun Bin bits of CLOY ep 1.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 27/12/2019 15:29

I’ve resumed Alhambra for entirely shallow reasons. Hyun Bin is mighty fine in all his sharp suits.

OP posts:
bettys · 27/12/2019 15:49

Is Alhambra any better? Is it worth it just for Hyun Bin appreciation? I have no Lindor would sherry do the trick?
