Ms Latte’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama Addicts #11)

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.)

Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.
Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Not Korean but just try it

Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Before We Get Married (Viki - Taiwanese)
Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)
Put Your Head on My Shoulder (Netflix - Chinese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Yep, for the price of a fancy latté each moth you get hours of lovely things to watch. DH is still paying ~£8 per month for NowTV and I don’t think he’s looked at it once since the GOT finalé.

It's definitely worth the subscription, although I must admit I've been Netflix biased as of late. They both seem to be getting more content and I am amazed at how easy it is to watch dramas compared to 10 years ago.

Bea · 23/12/2019 16:27

bettys... OMG!! Racehorse legs SKJ and excellent reliable PMY!!.... 😍😍😍... Ooooooo! Please be good! Please be good! This is the most exciting anticipated since Melting (😳😡....!)
I love them both! Not seen a PMY which I've been disappointed with! SKJ?... third charm! 😡... Not thinking about that! 😡🤔

Bea · 23/12/2019 16:38

.... And! “Itaewon Class” with Park Seo Joon!... Oooo! Lots to look forward to in 2020!!!

(deffo need something to look fwd to!.. Just overheard two blokes greet each other in supermarket ... One saying "yep! Think we did Boris proud! He'll get the country up and running..."....?? 😳😡😱😭)

Argh. 🤯

I just ran into Waitrose to get more pastry, cheese, butter etc. Overheard a guy saying to his (presumed) wife by the turkey section: “It’s OK, its OK, just because they haven’t got what we wanted doesn’t mean its going be a disaster.”

“It’s OK, its OK, just because they haven’t got what we wanted doesn’t mean its going be a disaster.”

Last night me, DH & DS all watched the episode of The Good Life where Christmas is cancelled Grin shades of Margot all over Waitrose right now

Bea · 23/12/2019 18:26

I caught myself in waitrose one time fretting as I they'd sold out of croustades!... 😭😂😂😂😂🙄🙄🙄😳😳😳😳

helloswellow · 23/12/2019 19:20

I've never even been in a waitrose. How the other half live!

DP has control of the TV tonight so we're watching a Japanese film about tuna. I'll be regaling you with tales of bluefin tuna before you know it.

bettys · 23/12/2019 19:25

Well I've finished King 2 Hearts with a great deal of skippity doo dah and missing huge chinks out it just went on and on! It's only getting 4/10 from me.

I need something good now

bettys · 23/12/2019 19:27

chunks!!!!

Time to crack on with the 2019 list

helloswellow · 23/12/2019 20:22

Was Hyun Bin not even enough to rescue it for you bettys

boatyardblues · 23/12/2019 20:22

Oh Bea! 🤣 I visit Waitrose about once every two years, usually in Dorset or somewhere else naice whilst we are away. Tonight it was because I had to fetch DH from an appointment outside of our usual patch. The gym bunny in front of me had fresh fruit, super healthy vegan snacks and vitamins. I felt somewhat judged for my little mound of dairy fats, duck liver pate and pastry. 😩

OP posts:
bettys · 23/12/2019 20:57

hello it was Lee Seung-Gi not Hyun Bin and no, he couldn't rescue it Sad

Doing a boaty shuffle, have so far had 10 mins of Psychopath Diary which has potential

boatyardblues · 23/12/2019 21:55

Thanks for updating my scores, Hello.

I’m watching Witcher (English language nonsense)! I started it when I was ironing earlier. It’s reminded me why I don’t usually bother. 😆

OP posts:
helloswellow · 23/12/2019 22:07

bettys I'm getting my 'better matured' actors confused! my apologies.

boatyard I watched about 5 minutes of Witcher with DP and he turned it off. I don't think it'll be enjoyed in this household.

boatyardblues · 23/12/2019 22:14

It’s doing my nut but I can’t be arsed to turn over just now. It’s definitely aping GOT with the pointless, gratuitous nudity and beheadings. 🤦‍♀️

Right now for some PROPER telly. Kdrama, obvs.

Bea · 23/12/2019 22:19

Boatyard.... Dh binged it the other day! I half heartedly watched it! Too much swords and sorcery and lots of boobs... I wasn't that impressed! It was just too ooo grubby!... I want angst... With heart and fun... And romance!... And swoons... And... Guffaws! And horror... And disbelief and relief!... And.. And... And.........

boatyardblues · 23/12/2019 22:49

Yep, the sorcerer’s live tits and ass apple-plucking diorama in ep 1 made me roll my eyes so hard I wasn’t sure I’d be able see straight after. I wish they’d stop spaffing so much money on 15 year old boy geek fantasies and make more TV that women would enjoy.

Anyway, good to see Prison Playbook’s Looney in a different role. He’s quite sinister in Doctor John as the spivvy prosecutor.

OP posts:
bettys · 23/12/2019 23:33

So far this evening I have shuffled (alongside watching Rogue One) Psychopath Diary, VIP & Stove League (all Viki) and the only one that I watched a whole episode of, and am heading in to the 2nd is Stove League

And I don't even like baseball

boatyardblues · 23/12/2019 23:36

And I don't even like baseball

Hahahahaha.

I am doing this a lot 🙄 when the doctors in Doctor John keep administering drugs intravenously that they’ve drawn from ampoules leaving massive air bubbles in the syringes. 🤦‍♀️

OP posts:
Bea · 23/12/2019 23:45

I started stove league other day... I'm interested so far!

bettys · 23/12/2019 23:51

Namgoong Min is very unlike his usual manic role, and there's a host of side characters that once I've sorted out who's who could be good value

bettys · 24/12/2019 00:34

Was thinking I might give Watcher a go - don’t think I’ll bother now 😂

boatyardblues · 24/12/2019 08:28

Watcher is well done and benefits from SKJ in fully fledged racehorse mode, but it is also fairly dark and bleak. Is that where you are at just now, Betty, or would sunshine and sparkles be better in the midwinter gloom?

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 24/12/2019 08:32

Well, I’m ploughing through Doctor John. The story continues to be fairly slight, if emotionally heavy, but Ji Sung is lovely to watch and (sad Crowned Clown queen) FL is acting her socks off, so I’m rolling with it. I’ll also note for the trend file that gratuitous kittens have made the leap from Cdrama to Kdrama.
