A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.)

Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.
Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Not Korean but just try it

Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Before We Get Married (Viki - Taiwanese)
Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)
Put Your Head on My Shoulder (Netflix - Chinese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Go Back Couple has Jang Na-Ra on top form, with added Park Morgan (Jang Ki-Young). The first episode has been a bit grim because it sets up the main couple’s divorce. It seems to capture a marriage in significant trouble well. The only bit that didn’t ring true was her trying to have a wee in peace in the first place. We all know your toddler follows you in from the get-go. 😄

I'm longing for the days of a peaceful wee. Especially as DS hasn't worked out mum yet so just calls me by whatever word he wants for that day. Even if I get to the bathroom without him, I still hear 'toasttttt' 50 times a second.

bettys · 16/12/2019 08:57

boatyard I really enjoyed Go Back Couple after the first episode, it’s a neat little drama.
And Park Morgan!

bettys · 16/12/2019 12:14

hello I have very daringly added 3 titles to the bottom of the spreadsheet, not in alphabetical order though that would be a bit daring 😱

bettys · 16/12/2019 12:15

Or colour! I am switching between Secret Garden & Love O2O (film version) at the moment

boatyardblues · 16/12/2019 12:16

Thanks Betty. I’ll stick with it then because Mr Go Go Squid in permanent grump mode is stressing me out. With DS2 in semi-permanent pre-Xmas/end of term haystack blowing mode, I need a gentle delight as my escape.

bettys I saw your additions! They're now in alphabetical order with their associated fancy formatting.

Where did you watch the film of Love O2O? I've been meaning to watch it but never bothered enough to go look for it 🤭

bettys · 16/12/2019 14:32

hello It's on Netflix

I'm quite enjoying Secret Garden on my second attempt, it's perfect fro writing cards & wrapping presents to. Fashions are a little dated though

helloswellow · 16/12/2019 15:29

How did I miss it! Maybe I saw Love O2O and thought it was the drama. Oh well, off to add it to my list now.
I haven't thought about Secret Garden in years. I remember watching it just before the last two episodes aired and hating myself for not checking it was all out yet!

Bea · 16/12/2019 20:56

Still in cinderella land!... OMG! When are they going to sort these couples out! It's getting irksome!!... GET ON WITH IT!! 😱😱😫😫😫😫😫😫😫

bettys · 16/12/2019 21:14

I'm in Secret Garden where everyone looks SO YOUNG! Sooo many well-known actors looking baby-faced. I'm actually quite enjoying it this time around

boatyardblues · 16/12/2019 22:01

I can’t believe Jang Na-Ra’s character turned Park Morgan down for being sweaty. Surely you insist he showers before your date, preferably while you watch. The woman has no vision.

If I wake up in kdramaland I want Kim Mi-kyung to be my Mum. Best kdrama Mum ever - consistently knocks it out of the park with every Mum role she does. She must have loved Healer - the chance to play something different.

OP posts:
bettys · 17/12/2019 03:31

She has just turned up in Secret Garden too which looks like it is going to take a typically bonkers kdrama left field twist.

bettys · 17/12/2019 03:36

Aaah the same writer wrote Goblin , DotS & Mr Sunshine

bettys · 17/12/2019 03:37

And the upcoming Lee Min Ho fantasy dual reality drama

AesopsMables · 17/12/2019 06:25

Boatyard and Bettys
I totally agree re Kim mi-Kyung she was great in all I've seen (particularly Another Miss Oh)

Not had chance for much viewing this week yet but hope to make up for it tomorrow eve onwards.

boatyardblues · 17/12/2019 07:26

There’s a Soompi article about Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin being really good friends in real life and having denied rumours they are a couple twice already this year...

OP posts:
helloswellow · 17/12/2019 07:55

I might have watched 2 films already this morning before everyone woke up 🤭 Someone stop me!

bettys · 17/12/2019 08:35

Ooh which ones hello?

boatyardblues · 17/12/2019 08:48

Only envy here. I was up too early for me to be in work much earlier than usual.

OP posts:
helloswellow · 17/12/2019 09:04

Love O2O and So Young. I enjoyed them both but neither was stellar. It made a nice change of pace from the usual 40 hours of viewing that Chinese dramas usually take.

bettys · 17/12/2019 11:03

Yes I enjoyed Love O2O too but it wrapped up lickety-spit! I can see why they made it into a series

helloswellow · 17/12/2019 13:09

bettys I definitely preferred the series. The characters were so much more realistic, although that was probably due to the fact they had more time to develop personalities.

Although it did make me smile that the same person played Cao Guang in both versions. Maybe he plays the 'scorned man with unrequited love' type quite well?

bettys · 17/12/2019 15:55

Oh I hadn’t noticed! He didn’t have glasses in the series did he?
Been out for Xmas lunch & am now a bit tiddly so need to collapse in front of Secret Garden
Thank goodness I’ve done my Xmas cards or I’d be having a Bridget Jones ‘I love you sssshhhooo much’ moment while writing them 😱😱
