A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.)

Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.
Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Not Korean but just try it

Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Before We Get Married (Viki - Taiwanese)
Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)
Put Your Head on My Shoulder (Netflix - Chinese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I just got the email about it. I can't wait. I'm watching a bit of everything that I've got downloaded right now.

The Many Faces of Ito on Netflix is quite interesting. 8 short episodes and it's different to things I've seen before.

Bea · 14/12/2019 16:37

aesops.... Ahhh! One of my favourites!! It's luverly and got me quite emotional!! 😱😭😭😭😭😭

I'm on ep5 of Cinderella... It's good fun and tripping along very nicely!!

Looking fwd to the new PSJ drama coming in the new year... Soompi reported it the other day!! 😂

boatyardblues · 14/12/2019 17:31

Something about Cinderella is annoying me (later episode) about medical ethics and risk, but I won’t say any more. 😡

I have been working all day but am back now & about to get stuck in - do I continue with Cinderella (ep 14, are you ahead of me boatyard?)
or give Crash Landing a whirl?

boatyardblues · 14/12/2019 18:26

Finish Cinderella - you’re nearly there & it is heartwarming.

Awwww! RM on Vlive today!... What a lovely young man! Wise words.. 😍🥰... Fwd to 48.00....

boatyardblues · 14/12/2019 21:30

I’ve started Crash Landing and I’m very much enjoying the squabbling chaebol clan and the couldn’t-give-a-fuck FL.

OP posts:
bettys · 14/12/2019 21:59

I've finished Cinderella - all tidied up nicely - and about to start Crash Landing too

boatyardblues · 14/12/2019 22:03

It’s already fab 38 minutes in. The FL and ML are going to be excellent value. 👌

boatyardblues · 14/12/2019 22:44

This is definitely my new favourite thing. Perfect weekend viewing.

bettys · 14/12/2019 23:30

Enjoying it hugely, especially the little touches like NK guard engrossed in his drama & the one sobbing over his letter 😆

boatyardblues · 14/12/2019 23:38

10 years of military service, though? 😯

OP posts:
bettys · 14/12/2019 23:44

Yes is that right???
I like the little Post credit scene, I may have to change my view on Hyun Bin with this.

boatyardblues · 15/12/2019 06:25

It’s worse 😯

Conscription in North Korea occurs despite ambiguity concerning its legal status. Men are universally conscripted while females undergo selective conscription. Conscription takes place at age 17 and service ends at 30. Children of the political elites are exempt from conscription, as are people with bad songbun (ascribed social status in North Korea). Recruitment is done on the basis of annual targets drawn up by the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea and implemented locally by schools.

On Hyun Bin, I started Hyde, Jekyll, Me afterwards out of interest and it left me cold.

OP posts:
bettys · 15/12/2019 07:04

Oh snap!!! I managed maybe 10 minutes but either it was his haircut or the FL but I gave up

bettys · 15/12/2019 07:06

even the shirtless scene didn’t charm as much as the little smile he gave at the end of CLOY

NK conscription is just AWFUL 😱

boatyardblues · 15/12/2019 07:11

I wonder what the policy on women means. Do you think its based on fertility or similar, so that you get to swerve the army if you agree to be married off young and start popping out babies for the motherland?

OP posts:
bettys · 15/12/2019 07:54

And how on earth could you hope to study & have a career if you aren't a child of the elite and could be shoved in the army for 10 years?

helloswellow · 15/12/2019 08:06

The term of service differs, with women being free from the military at the age of 23 and men being bound for 10 years. This initiative was proposed to replenish the losses felt in the 1990s during the North Korean famine, when the country experienced widespread death, a low birth rate, and a high child mortality rate.

So they make you serve until you're the perfect age to have children. Then I suppose you have to keep having children regardless of what you actually want.

Is Crash Landing On You getting a boat signal? boatyard I didn't manage to get to it last night but if I see some ⛵⛵⛵ I'll start it as soon as I've got time.

boatyardblues · 15/12/2019 08:12

Oh yes, very much so. Something about the humour, but it’s perfectly balanced and not too broad. Her mad sprint for freedom through a minefield and the soldiers’ horrified reactions was funny. Also “you’re running the wrong way!” It’s perfectly set up because the whole squad stand to lose if they turn her in. FL is also brilliant - ballsy, human, funny. ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️

OP posts:
bettys · 15/12/2019 08:24

Oh yes I think its got some nice touches, like involving the whole squad not just ML .You can already see the chemistry between the ML & FL. Looking forward very much to the next episode Smile

helloswellow · 15/12/2019 12:22

I'm off to dive into it now. I shall hopefully return full of the joys of having a good on air show to watch again.

AesopsMables · 15/12/2019 18:07

I've hit a wall with MLFAS on ep 10 already but realised it's 21 episodes 😯

Have a long haul flight at the end of the month, not sure whether to download the rest for then or start saving Crash Landing
Decisions!

DD1 has been watching Mukbang videos recently and one of her favourites is a Korean lady, she sent me the link. What! She's eating enormous amounts of excruciatingly hot noodles whilst slurping/chomping noisily- its fascinating but not sure why?!

boatyardblues · 15/12/2019 18:38

Anyone else caught up with today’s Crash Landing? I love it! The scene with the dynamo/gym bike cut made me chuckle. DS2 watched it with me until Hyun Bin was put in the torture room, then I switched it off because it was unclear how dark it might get. The ‘bookend’ today was interesting - just the kind of unexpected kdrama twist that hooks you in. Thumbs up from me. 👍
