For those who have seen it all, or don't mind spoilers.

Yes... Julia seemed to disappear at random for hours on end and no one seemed to ask where she'd been. Odd and not like real life.

NoSauce · 26/11/2019 12:00

Cliff is Marsha's ex husband? In one of the flash backs they show Julia with the phone and her address book and you can clearly see the entry is for Cliff

Ah thank you. I missed that! Hmm I wonder if Leo will turn out to be Cliffs then?

Kirstiemom · 26/11/2019 12:06

I kept hoping it would get better but it didn’t but a lot of people here seem to have liked it . I just thought the characters were unlike able , the plot obvious , some incredulous ( how did his brother know were he was? ) . I was married to a psychopath for 24 years - I could have written a more interesting story .

ColonelCathcart · 26/11/2019 12:29

I thought Marsha’s husband was called Carlton?

Nikki Amuka-Bird who plays Marsha is only 43. I didn’t think she looked like mid 50s imo.

VanGoghsDog · 26/11/2019 15:32

No, Marsha could not have been sixty. Maybe just about fifty but even that!

Julia said she had always been wealthy, so I assumed family money.

Kirstiemom · 26/11/2019 16:07

It is a trait of psychopaths since they have no empathy that they practice smiling in the mirror I think that was a dead give away that he was a psychopath especially since his face returned to its cold state afterwards

wherearemymarbles · 26/11/2019 21:28

Problem is - i didnt like any of the characters and that always makes for bad film.

MollyButton · 27/11/2019 14:33

I kind of liked the daughter - she seemed very screwed up, but less self centred than everyone else. I also quite liked Marsha and her daughter (just wanted her to kick Ted out, regardless of how good the sex was).

NoSauce · 27/11/2019 14:51

I thought the daughter and Marsha were badly cast.

newdeer · 27/11/2019 14:54

I thought it was well acted. There was some pretty subtle stuff going on. When Benjamin tried to tell her in the car how appalling his childhood had been due to abject poverty and how that changes you as a person she sort of nodded vaguely in a way that suggested, 'Yes dear, no clue what you're on about, don't go on.' That seemed very realistic.

GoldenFlaps · 28/11/2019 18:32

I didn't warm to any of the characters and her ex husband was so like mine I found it hard to stomach.

Sarcelle · 29/11/2019 23:26

Watched it all. So wanted Julia to stick 2 fingers up to everybody and disappear. But not to be.

Heather448 · 30/11/2019 00:17

It was meant to be amibugious..i was hoping he was sincere..enjoyed the series immensely..but his smirks in the mirror..and was It him or his brother who killed the shopkeeper..all was meant to be ambiguous..her ex husband was violent..her eldest son is a cheater..her best friend a betrayer..so it's all about who do you give the most trust to and why. You can't just condemn Benjamin or not trust him..others in Julia's life are hypocrites big time. I'm weighing on the side that Benjamin connex her..but I love that they left it not absolutely clear..maybe it really was a Harold and Maude scenario..either way..excellent series..excellent acting

HeIenaDove · 30/11/2019 03:02

I watched all the episodes on bbc i player over the past two nights.

I enjoyed it. Benjamin didnt appeal in any way at all.

Loved Marshas stylish Christmas tree.

peppinanna · 30/11/2019 08:30

I have almost finished it. Hard to like any of the characters! Julia comes across very anxious the whole time and Benjamin really does seem like a gold digger tbh. Why else would he want to marry her so fast.
I am finding her son Patrick's wife really irritating for some reason 😂
Della is a strange character

midsomermurderess · 30/11/2019 23:14

I think Julia was quite complex, not quite the doormat she might have seemed. She bristled when her daughter-in-law said she was going back to work, had a little dig at her having a glass of wine when breastfeeding. So definite undercurrents of something there. As for Ben, I think it was ambiguous. When Ted turned up drunk and abusive, you saw Ben clenching his fist till Julia took it in her hand. And standing looking out the window at the end, at ease or surveying his new domain? I was half expecting Ben to shrug off her embrace.

HeIenaDove · 30/11/2019 23:30

I like the DIL She strikes me as very feminist. You just know that if she found out about Patricks affair she would totally fuck him off.

Perhaps Julia is a bit envious of her strength. There is also the generational thing. When Julia was young you were expected to put up and shut up. "its just a domestic"

rumple · 01/12/2019 08:23

I was very frustrated at the end and annoyed I’d invested time on the series Very clumsy directing of how we’re supposed to feel. Benjamin really a goody ted a baddy, despite the fact Benjamin has spent whole series exerting coercive control over Julia. Ok great he’s probably not violent but he has alienated Julia from her kids (hanging up phone on son, spending all her money, moving into daughters room, being very hostile to her kids behind her back). But all of that is fine because he make Julia happy - no! I feel this give license to mental abuse telling us it’s not as bad as physics abuse. the fact the youngest son has spent his whole life thinking he lives in a perfect family would suggest ted managed to get his temper under control.

HeIenaDove · 01/12/2019 16:55

Some great points there rumple.

Sarcelle · 01/12/2019 19:29

Apparently there is unlikely to be a follow up.

peppinanna · 01/12/2019 19:53

I don't think there needs to be a second series really but if there was I reckon it would be Benjamin blackmailing Patrick about the affair and spending all of Julia's children inheritance!
It was a good series but agree the last episode was a little rushed. Can't believe she married him based on everything she knew but I think Kieran's revelation and outburst about her pushed her back to Benjamin.

HeIenaDove · 01/12/2019 20:13

i think she saw some of her ex husband in Kieran and recognised the behaviour.

Hydrogenbeatsoxygen · 02/12/2019 12:27

Apparently there is unlikely to be a follow up

Thank goodness for that @Sarcelle

MaybeDoctor · 03/12/2019 10:02

I enjoyed it - but I don't think they got married at the end?

She said 'Let's just skip all the…..bit'. I think they just headed back to the house to celebrate their relationship.
