That’s ok Private my viewing choices are a bit pathetic Grin

They will definitely bend the rules for Fed to play in the Olympics - it’s probably going to be his swan song (why else would he wear the yukky Uniqlo kit?). They’ve also got to let Keith play in his home Olympics.

JaneJeffer · 22/10/2019 20:08

Oh thanks for reminding me about GBBO Fizzy. I still haven't caught up with Love in the Countryside. Your DH could be right about it Grin

Fizzywinegum · 22/10/2019 20:33

Yes His Lordship could be right on this occasion Jane Grin (I don’t say that very often!)

PrivateSpidey · 23/10/2019 16:29

Grin Fizzy I would never criticise anyone's viewing choices - especially when I have 20+ episodes of Midsomer Murders saved on the sky box!! Grin

I just watched the end of Goffin v Cilic. Goffin won, he was hitting aces and everything. Cilic just doesn't look his old self at all.

Goffin plays Opelka next. He's tall you know Grin

They also showed an interview with Stan - seemed to be mostly questions about Andy Murray Halloween Hmm

private what were you watching the tennis on - is it on Prime? I've just finished a pile of ironing and thought I'd sit down with a cuppa before preparing dinner, to watch Evans (if it is on Prime) but he's just lost anyway.

I'll just empty the dishwasher instead Confused

PrivateSpidey · 23/10/2019 18:13

Oh no kazza! Yes it was on prime. Stan said his match started at 5pm (Swiss time I presume) but that could be over by now - am not watching ATM...

I did manage to tune in again but when I did, it was showing Fed 5-0 against ?Albot - so I tuned out again...

What are Rafa and Novak doing in Kazakhstan?? I saw some photos of them carrying flowers and surrounded by dignitaries Halloween Grin and now I've seen them playing a match. What are they up to, does anyone know??!

It's some exhibition thing, iirc, Private. I didn't realise it was so close to his wedding- but now I remember that the organisers in Vienna were narked that they chose to do that rather than play a tournament. Basel always moan that Rafa doesn't go (even though I can't remember the last time he did, and it's really just another tournament that feels like it's built around Fed, like Halle).

Raahh · 24/10/2019 18:20

In fact, I got annoyed by Muster in an article going on about how great Roger is for playing Basel, when Rafa and Djok aren't playing. Apparently they just play as and when they want. Hmm

That would be like Fed who skips whole seasons then. And plays as and when he wants. Confused

PrivateSpidey · 24/10/2019 18:23

Yy re Basel, doesn't Fed always win there? Although I think Delpo once beat him there, or that might be wishful thinking on my part.

Hopefully Stan gets a lot of home crowd support as well. When you look at the points, he could possibly qualify for the WTFs - he'd have to do well in Basel and in Paris though.

OP posts:
PrivateSpidey · 24/10/2019 18:25

I thought everyone said playing as and when you want was an amazing genius idea and the dog's bollocks, basically.

Or is that only when Fed does it?! Hmm

OP posts:
Raahh · 24/10/2019 18:34

Private exactly, streamlining the season etc, prolonging his careerHmm. Yes, only ok when it's Fed. And Rafa could have been on honeymoon this week, if he really wanted to be. He has actaullt earned the right as has Djok by now, to pick and choose when he plays. And by my reckoning, injuries aside, he's played the usual amount (Djok has form for not bothering with 'smaller' tournaments- so don't know why they are surprised).

In other news, John Isner has welcomed a new baby- JohnGrin. At least he didn't haveto think too hard. I feel sorry for the daughter-- who is called Hunter Grace, iirc. I hate Hunter as a first name- but it certainly doesn't go with Grace! What is she ends up 8ft like her dad??Grin.

Raahh · 24/10/2019 18:59

Stef has won.

Which is nice.

kazzaD66 · 24/10/2019 19:06

I hate the American tradition of naming your son after the father, grandfather etc. I used to work with a Yank called George Jones V (as in "the fifth"!). Us Brits used to call him "Five". It really wound him up Grin

Raahh · 24/10/2019 19:11

Five I'd love that Grin.

John's dad is Bob - and he has 2 older brothers, who are not called Robert. Clearly only John Isner felt the need to name his child after himself Grin

My mum has the same name as my gran- maninly because she was born in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, granny was caught out, (thought she'd have another boy), so picked the first name that came to mind.

Shame it's so awful. Doreen .

Grin
kazzaD66 · 24/10/2019 19:16

My MIL is called Doreen. Or as one of her sisters, who's lived in NZ for about 70 years, pronounces it.... D'reeeeen Grin

Raahh · 24/10/2019 19:20

kazza my granny is from Hoylake, they tend to pronounce it D'reen there too.

PrivateSpidey · 24/10/2019 19:26
Grin On my dad's side of the family, loads of them are called the same first name. To make it more confusing, my grandpa had the same first name as my granny's brother, then they both had sons that they named after themselves Hmm Grin

So there's Harry Smith, young Harry Smith, Harry Jones, young Harry Jones* etc. Then there are the various off shoots also with the same name.

I mean, why?!

Your mum, I can understand Raahh. That is obviously a high pressure situation Grin

*Names may have been changed Grin

OP posts:
Raahh · 24/10/2019 19:37

Dh and Bil have the same names.

Like John Thomas /Thomas John (but not that). Coupled with a very unusual surname , it has caused issues in the past.

(But his dad was American. Maybe it's a 'thing' Grin). Or just weird.

Raahh · 24/10/2019 19:39

My mum has a brother and step brother with the same name.

Doesn't help that my sister's husband has the same name too.

Names are funny things Grin

PrivateSpidey · 24/10/2019 20:27

Grin I'm already confused

OP posts:
kazzaD66 · 24/10/2019 20:28

My mum was given her mum's first name as her middle name, same with her brother, who's middle name was their dad's first name.

Thankfully, my parents didn't continue that tradition, otherwise my middle name would be Sylvia (apologies to any Sylvias out there Blush) Grin

JaneJeffer · 24/10/2019 21:19

My family is full of people with the same names and they keep marrying people with the same names to the point where it's ridiculous!

Raahh · 24/10/2019 21:19

I actually love the name Sylvia, my dad's cousin (bit older than him) is Sylvia. Married a GI and moved to Pensylvannia. Remember meeting meeting her 5 dc when I was small. No word of a lie- 2 were called Donny and Marie.

There was no way my daughters were getting my first name, I hate but it's quite funny how my dds names have worked out (bit outing, but I have mentioned it before on
threads).
DD1 is Millie (Millicent). Not named for Millicent Fawcett, I just loved the name. But- her middle name is Elizabeth(like me). Millicent Fawcett's sister was called Elizabeth.

Now, 4 years later, I had dd2. Loved a name. Philippa.

Guess what Millicent Fawcett's daughter was called ? Grin.

All completely coincidental, but makes me look a bit of a raging Suffragist, for those who know the history Grin.
