Documentary
Malcolm and Barbara: Love's Farewell Wednesday 08 August
9:00pm - 10:30pm
ITV1 London
No-one who saw Paul Watson's 1999 film Malcolm and Barbara: a Love Story, will ever forget it. Malcolm Pointon was a rakishly handsome, charming, outgoing and talented musician until he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease at the age of 51. His wife Barbara devoted herself to her husband's care, watching this once gentle man become a muttering, shuffling, sometimes violent stranger. In Malcolm and Barbara: Love's Farewell, Malcolm dies, surrounded by his family. "Do you want to fi lm the bitter end, Paul?" asks Barbara of the fi lm-maker who is now a close friend. As his life fades, Malcolm is tiny, bony, shrunken and painfully frail. Death, when it comes, is barely a whisper. Even though this was not my tragedy, so perhaps it was a self-indulgence, I cried and cried. For Malcolm and, of course, for Barbara - stoic, angry, magnificent Barbara. If I see a better documentary this year, I'll be very surprised.

She was my music tutor when I did a primary PGCE. She was very inspiring and talked about her husband quite a bit.

Will try and watch (DS and DD permitting ).

Is this the programme that caused an uproar with a fake dyeing scene? Not that it makes an difference to the message they want to get across.

IdrisTheDragon · 08/08/2007 16:25

I think it is the programme that has had coverage over the dying scene.

RTKangaMummy · 08/08/2007 16:25

Yes but it doesn't say that he dies during the film

It has a still shot of him - to signify his dying but she does not want that to be the point of the documentary

Looking forward to this tonight(although agree it will be sad) as I work for a Day Centre giving respite to dementia sufferers.Although I look after them on a day to day basis,I don't see the full picture and how they are at home. This will give me a better insight to how the illness affects the carers and their families.

saw the first one. But in the meantime my MIL developed Alzheimers and vascular dementia, and died last year a completely unrecognisable person. Agree, it will be worth watching, but not sure I or my DH could bring ourselves to. Puts some of our minor niggles with our partners in perspective, I should think.
