No-one who saw Paul Watson's 1999 film Malcolm and Barbara: a Love Story, will ever forget it. Malcolm Pointon was a rakishly handsome, charming, outgoing and talented musician until he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease at the age of 51. His wife Barbara devoted herself to her husband's care, watching this once gentle man become a muttering, shuffling, sometimes violent stranger. In Malcolm and Barbara: Love's Farewell, Malcolm dies, surrounded by his family. "Do you want to fi lm the bitter end, Paul?" asks Barbara of the fi lm-maker who is now a close friend. As his life fades, Malcolm is tiny, bony, shrunken and painfully frail. Death, when it comes, is barely a whisper. Even though this was not my tragedy, so perhaps it was a self-indulgence, I cried and cried. For Malcolm and, of course, for Barbara - stoic, angry, magnificent Barbara. If I see a better documentary this year, I'll be very surprised.
