This is the thread for Episode 12 (season 3) of The Handmaid's Tale.

We are watching on Channel 4, UK pace and have only seen episodes 1 - 11 so far.

Please, NO SPOILERS.

I can't believe there are only two more episodes - tonight's and the season finale next week. Very patchy series, which picked up last week.

M worried the escape is going to fail now.
Perhaps con l can insist he keeps a handmad as part of any deal?

TeaStory · 26/08/2019 09:26

Interesting that C Winslow's wife thought that she wouldn't be allowed to keep the children without him.

Good point - as women aren’t allowed to control their own money etc in Gilead, presumably a male relative or guardian is required to step in when Winslow doesn’t reappear?

That’s what I thought. And maybe Serena’s mother had a male relative financing her behind the scenes.

Although if that relative was Fred, she’s going to have a problem.

Crinkle77 · 26/08/2019 10:56

What I want to know is how the Martha's aren't going to end up on the wall for their part in helping the children escape. Surely the regime will realise they are all complicit and hang them. After all they are the ones that care for them and the Martha in Hannah's household was executed for putting a child in danger. Fail or succeed they're all screwed.

Basketofkittens · 26/08/2019 12:25

Why is the prison so posh? Looks more like a hotel. Where did Serena’s new, chic clothes come from?

hopeishere · 26/08/2019 12:28

The actress who plays Serena is beautiful.

Crinkle77 · 26/08/2019 13:21

I think it was more like detention centre inside government buildings rather than a prison.

cushioncovers · 26/08/2019 13:22

What was the significance of June crossing her hands at the graveside?

I was wondering the same thing.

Invisimamma · 26/08/2019 13:41

I'm watching Working Mom's on Netflix and the actress that play Rita is also in it (Amanda Brugel) and she is very attractive, stunningly beautiful!

Amazing the difference some drab clothes (and brilliant acting!) can make to a person.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 26/08/2019 14:01

Cushion - I've been wondering that too.

I think CL realised that she was mimicking him, copying his body language - that she's a master of being what she needs to be in order to get what she wants. I wonder if he realised there that she was capable of turning a blind eye to Mrs Lawrence's OD.

I suspect it's not going to end well for June. He's entirely unpredictable.

stumbledin · 26/08/2019 14:34

Oh dear another episode spoilt by the film makers obsession with making references to other films / directors.

And the stupidity of thinking of focusing on June's face is somehow more interesting than actual plot and good dialogue.

Also, just hopeless having these set scenes without the background information being there to explain how it could happen.

All this passing messages in the supermarket actually show that June has no idea what is really going on, because the real plotters, the Marthas are busy at it everyday or week. Flying in planes, distributing food and drugs. They actually make June look like a liability, and not someone who gets their hand held and told how inspiring they are.

Why would Luke visit Fred? Its implausible, but just set up so he can punch him. I really feel the dead hand of the male eye is dumbing this series down. Its not even as though anyone is saying maybe we could swop Nicole for Hannah who is after all the actual daughter of both June and Luke.

Why would they let Serena see Nicole. She has no claim on her at all and in fact as someone who has aided the rape of the mother would not be suitable to have visitation rights. (Is her Canadian liason person meant to have a bit of a crush on her???)

Why was it important for Commander Lawrence to make sure the borders aren't closed when they are flying in a plane ie not trying to escape by road?

The look he gave June at the graveside is he realising she probably did let his wife die.

And the thing is, knowing that they are going to have endless more series means we know what's going to happen. June will not get out.

Unless of course she does and the next series is the Martha's Tale!!

That would be my vote!

EmpressLesbianInChair · 26/08/2019 14:36

And the thing is, knowing that they are going to have endless more series means we know what's going to happen. June will not get out.

She’s not planning to this time. And yes, the face is getting vastly overdone!

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 26/08/2019 14:46

Yes I think we’ve seen more than enough close ups of June looking determined/menacing. They might as well use the same clip each time. It’s so Over done.

Jamhandprints · 26/08/2019 15:16

@Invisimamma she's also in Kim's Convenience, a brilliant comedy on Netflix. I love Working Moms this series.

I was wondering if the Martha were going with the kids but I don't think so, so yes, they would get in massive trouble...also why aren't the handmaids mums going? Who is going to raise their kids? They're going from being spoilt in posh houses to the Canadian care system?

Abraid2 · 26/08/2019 15:21

The children will be traumatised by missing their ‘mothers’ and Marthas.

Jamhandprints · 26/08/2019 15:21

*I mean Handmaid mums, not the Handmaid's mums!

AGnu · 26/08/2019 15:35

They'd be far more sensible to pull a Sound of Music - plan some festival thing where the children are going to perform, take them to one side to "practise" & don't bring them back. Nobody but those on the plane would be implicated & they'd have a legitimate reason to gather lots of children so no need for Marthas to be sneaking around after dark with children who should be in bed.

EachandEveryone · 26/08/2019 15:36

I wondered what wouldve happened if theyd called an ambulance? Is sucide and MH in general seen as a sin in their eyes?

LaurieFairyCake · 26/08/2019 15:44

I loved it ! So sad to see Mrs Lawrence go, she was fantastically played.

If I was writing this, I'd write June into power as the new Mrs Lawrence ...

She won't leave Gilead as Hannah isn't around.

She can fight from within the system as a Commanders wife and get people/kids out.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 26/08/2019 15:47

I don’t think any of the Martha’s have anywhere near enough influence to suggest a festival of some kind and have it happen.

AGnu · 26/08/2019 16:08

No, but CL could. A show of Gilead's greatest assets after the capture of the Waterfords.

AGnu · 26/08/2019 16:11

I did wonder about June as the next Mrs Lawrence but I think CL was too devoted to Eleanor to replace her, even in name.

The more I think about it, the more convinced I become that CL is going to turn against June now. I can see him stringing her along but walking her into a trap.

inmyfeelings · 26/08/2019 16:15

I think CL will be more motivated than ever to leave Gilead now he has lost his wife

Crinkle77 · 26/08/2019 16:53

In not sure about CL being more driven to leave Gilead now. His wife was the motivation for that and now she's gone.

Invisimamma · 26/08/2019 17:25

CL has no motivation to leave Gilead now and risk everything and potentially be tried for war crimes, he was only going along with it for the sake of helping his wife.

I don't think he's invested in saving the children so he either goes along with because his wife would have wanted him to or he turns against June and sabotages the plan.
