I keep an eye out for new ones, but haven't discovered any as good as The Killing, or any character as involved as Saga.

Any recommendations?

Midnight Sun - French female detective brought to Sweden to partner male Sami cop. Serial killer with inventive murders. Available here only on DVD. I enjoyed it.
I have just started Those Who Kill. (DVD again.)
There are a couple worth watching on Netflix - Deadwind and my absolute favourite Bordertown.
Not a detective series but have you seen Ride Upon the Storm (Walter Presents on C4?) About a Danish family of priests - that was stunningly good.

IWantMyHatBack · 22/07/2019 12:24

Brilliant, thanks for those. I'll look them up.

Do you have any recommendations? I have seen all 4 seasons of The Bridge and all 3 of The Killing.

IWantMyHatBack · 22/07/2019 12:46

Not scandi, but Marcella is by the same director as the Bridge, (on Netflix). Top of the Lake is a similar feel as well.

Will have a think. I've watched so many of them that's they've all merged into one.

Borgen of course. Dicte is quite interesting, but not that involved

rosegoldwatcher · 22/07/2019 12:58

Have seen those, except Borgen. (Dicte - a bit meh!)
Some excellent French ones on C4 and Netflix: Dead Beautiful, Killer/Vanished by the Lake (all C4) and The Break, The Cabin, La mante, Frozen Dead, The Forest (Netflix.)
I seem to (mostly) prefer subtitled series these days!

IWantMyHatBack · 22/07/2019 13:01

Seen the Returned?

rosegoldwatcher · 22/07/2019 13:04

Yes! Not too keen on supernatural type stuff.
Are you interested in foreign language films?

Herocomplex · 22/07/2019 13:11

The first series of Trapped was very good, set in Iceland. I don’t like the second as much though.

rosegoldwatcher · 22/07/2019 13:24

Have seen them too. I agree - second series rarely matches up to a first. Have you seen either A Man called Ove or In Order of Disappearance? Films - both Scandi, the second is definitely noir!

AnyFucker · 22/07/2019 13:36

.

IWantMyHatBack · 22/07/2019 13:45

Depends on the film, but yes I've seen a few

Got Festen on my list to watch, haven't got round to that one yet

Ride On The Storm
Not detective series but excellent .

MrsSpenserGregson · 22/07/2019 13:56

I agree re Trapped. Series 1 was brilliant.

The Legacy is a Danish drama and it's brilliant - I think it's on Amazon Prime.

Do you like the Wallander books / TV series? (Swedish). There's an English version with Kenneth Branagh (on Netflix) but the original Swedish one is loads better and it's on Amazon Prime.

NorthEndGal · 22/07/2019 14:01

Blackspot was good

rosegoldwatcher · 22/07/2019 14:18

MrsSpenserG - I watched Kenneth B's Wallander, quite enjoyed it. Much better than the American versions of The Bridge and The Killing. Will be ordering Swedish Wallander tout suite!
IWantMyHat - Festen looks harrowing!
Northend - Have seen both series of Blackspot - first one was good/weird but was very frustrated by the second. Could say the same of The Dark.

Footle · 22/07/2019 15:23

I second The Legacy

DarlingNikita · 22/07/2019 16:30

I agree that Trapped and The Legacy are excellent.

Not crime per se, but Thicker Than Water (Swedish) is an excellent family drama. And Tabula Rasa was good (Belgian, thriller but again not really/only crime).

Kinraddie · 22/07/2019 23:52

Definitely recommend Ride upon the Storm - you'll recognise lots of the actors from The Killing, The Bridge etc.
Also loved Rita (danish) and Bonus Family (Swedish) - Rita's about a teacher, her life, relationships and family. Bonus Family is about blended families, very funny and also moving. Both on Netflix

Lunde · 23/07/2019 00:10

Trapped (Iceland) - especially season 1 where the town and passenger ferry is snowed in, season 2 is also good but you need to concentrate to keep track of all the characters

I don't know if they are available in the UK but I quite like Mord i Sandhamn (the Sandhamn Murders) set on the island of Sandhamn a couple of hours from Stockholm - has a touch of Shetland meets Midsomer Murders. Based on the books by Viveca Sten

TapasForTwo · 23/07/2019 00:14

Not Scandi, but every bit as good - Spiral. Set in Paris. Just brilliant.

Branster · 23/07/2019 05:54

If you have a lifetime to spend on this, head to Walter Presents on All4. Online so you can watch on iPad, laptop or Smart TV. They show a quick synopsis so you can select what you want.
Otherwise keep an eye on BBC4 Saturday night around 9PM sometime they have new series coming up. Sky Arts used to show this type of series but haven’t seen anything new on there for at least a year.

rosegoldwatcher · 23/07/2019 09:33

Oooh Spiral - yes!
Series 7 coming very soon to BBC 4.
(I don't enjoy Montelbano)

TapasForTwo · 23/07/2019 17:34

Brilliant rosegold
Will look forward to that.

rosegoldwatcher · 24/07/2019 12:25

Tapas - have you watched Dead Beautiful on Walter Presents? It stars Thierry Godard - Gilou in Spiral. (Yum yum!)
