Ye - I suspect it's air time that gets axed if they don't play ball. Or they manipulate what is aired - e.g. George and his prawn cocktail crisps.

My bro was once in a celebrity dance show and he said that they made him out to be a complete arsehole by editing comments in a conversation so that they were taken completely out of context.

I wouldn't do it. For all the tea in China. My mental health is fragile enough!

ProteinshakesandAntonsAss · 09/07/2019 18:26

Producers can easily manipulate results. Without changing them.

Personally, I wish these shows were less directed. I think they woild be more entertaining with less involvement.

I like unseen bits, because it can be boring, but you actually see their personalities. Not how they are when they are under pressure to perform

Thump · 09/07/2019 18:30

There was a radio interview with someone recently (not a celebrity - maybe a journalist or something) and her view was that it's like a laboratory experiment on chimps or something and if such a thing was allowed on animals, the animal rights activists would get it banned.

I sort of agree. I know it's entertaining and I am the first to comment as if they're public property/animals in a zoo - but they are just human at the end of the day. I'll try to be more mindful of that I guess!

Bluntness100 · 09/07/2019 18:38

Of course producers influence it, that's their job, they need to keep it interesting or it would just be a bunch of folks sunbathing.

But the actions are all the contestants and they vie to go on there. They know exactly what they are getting into and want the fame. The good bits of it. And they get bitter when they don't get it, or it wasn't as good as they expected, they didn't turn into the stars they wished to be, let's not pretend otherwise.

It's people like Amy I don't understand, she's 26 years old. She knows what that show is, you don't go on there to find a life partner. More a holiday romance with a shot at fame.

If you want a life partner, then there are many ways to go about it. Appearing on love island isn't one of them.

justrestinginmybankaccount · 09/07/2019 18:45

I don't know why, but Curtis isn't driving me mad. He should be offending me, but he just isn't! I really want him to stay so I can see where this all goes for him.

I suspect he's someone who would drive me absolutely bonkers in real life.

butmaybe · 09/07/2019 18:47

I'm not sure they do know what they're getting into, the extent of it...

the actions are all the contestants
Reading the recent articles, they are manipulated into certain behaviours, or have other actions not shown at all. I don't think the actions are all the contestants.

they get bitter when they don't get it, or it wasn't as good as they expected, they didn't turn into the stars they wished to be
What previous contestants are describing is a lot more than this. It's the reaction to how they felt in the villa, and then getting out and seeing the public reaction.

I've seen comments on here that no contestant would deserve to read about themselves. And this is Mumsnet, it's not the most hardcore part of social media!

Thump · 09/07/2019 18:47

I don't think you'd know what you were getting yourself into until you go there and are actually manipulated. So saying Amy should know what it is, is a little idiotic. I'd challenge you to go on there Bluntness. Tell it like it is from the airways why don't ya!

Thump · 09/07/2019 18:50

It's easy for people like Bluntness and myself for that matter to 'tell it like it is' and be 'blunt' etc. Not so easy to read shit about yourself. That's not something most people have experience of.

Bellendejour · 09/07/2019 18:56

I think this year they have tried in some ways to manage things more - so when Amy was getting death threats suddenly we stopped getting shown bitchy Amy. Joe was obviously tactfully managed out. But there will definitely be unfair editing going on and that can have a huge impact - eg apparently Lucie and Tommy have been cuddling but we haven’t seen any of that. Instead Lucie looks like she has this mad baseless and completely unreciprocated, never encouraged crush on Tommy (one half of this year’s golden couple) and she’s been being called a snake etc on social media. Maybe he hasn’t encouraged anything and she just can’t get past a bad decision/keeps misreading things, but if he had then it’s kind of unfair not to show it and let Lucie take the hit.

RonnieScotts · 09/07/2019 18:59

It's people like Amy I don't understand, she's 26 years old. She knows what that show is.

^^ this exactly.

The show is brutal, it's designed to test relationships and friendships under the scrutiny of the nation and not for the faint hearted. Amy is far too insecure and delicate for this show, why didn't someone stop her?

Thump · 09/07/2019 19:06

I don't think you can know what people can handle.
As I mentioned my brother was on a reality tv dance show. He had no fucking idea what he was getting himself in for. He's a doctor ffs, you'd think he'd handle it? Nope - a stomach ulcer ruptured a month later due to the stress of it. I believe George Hook described my brother as the 'Clive Woodward of dance - nobody likes him but he gets the job done.' Clive Woodward is a rugby pundit and radio presenter - he's like Shrek and would know as much about dancing as I'd know about rugby - he's also been at the tail end of a lot of public trauma himself!

It's not something you can imagine.

You need to have nerves of steel and a jolly disposition to handle it I think - Maura seems to be doing well. The ones who work out a lot and get the stress out that way maybe are handling it better. Which is mainly the guys really.

itswinetime · 09/07/2019 19:06

But it's not the producers who axe them - it's either the viewers or the contestants themselves

But the producers decide what order the recouple in which can have a big impact on who goes. The votes we are given are on the vague and can be changed just adding and extra couple to the bottom islanders completely changes who the vote goes! Air time is a massive part of who stays or goes! They have a load of control!

I don't think it's fair to say that contestants don't have a clue what they are going in to love island in particular there has been lots of attention and the show the support they receive and manipulation in reality tv has been a thing since big brother started 20ish years a go. The flip side is people think they can cope that it won't be that bad for them ect, ect. I can see both sides.

Not sure what the answer is though as reality tv will go on as long as people watch it and are willing to go on it and people will carry on going on it in the hope they will be one of the lucky ones to be rich and famous and everything they want

Thump · 09/07/2019 19:07

Clive Woodward is not the rugby pundit pmsl - George Hook, the judge who made the comment about my brother was a rugby pundit.

carmenbea · 09/07/2019 19:09

Just seen a pic of Anton buzzing and getting hyped up over the new girl coming in... and he's sitting right next to Belle Confused very muggy

Thump · 09/07/2019 19:11

Anton seems like he'd get up on a hole in the wall! Grin

What does he do in real life?

Bellendejour · 09/07/2019 19:11

Anton needs to sit down with his fucking breath spray.

GeriTe · 09/07/2019 19:15

Of course the producers manipulate who goes!! They gave no air time to Jourdan and Danny we never got to see them together didn't hear either of them speak for days so who is going to vote for them. They want Amy or Lucie out also as they are getting complaints and those two are very sensitive. So they manipulate what we see and make sure one of them is out.

TatianaLarina · 09/07/2019 19:18

They know exactly what they are getting into

I disagree. It’s very clear from accounts of contestants that they didn’t know, nor posters on this thread who watch the show avidly. People might think they know, or imagine what they think it will be like, but the reality turns out very different.

Also you don’t know how you’d feel or react in a given situation until you’re in it.

Bandara · 09/07/2019 19:19

Love island is really set up for us to enjoy someone else's emotional pain.
Put couples together
Send new people in to try to break couples up

Is the entire premise of it. It is out to hurt people

Bandara · 09/07/2019 19:21

I am watching it and enjoying it, but I am enjoying because of all the drama.
And when I break it right down , that good "tv drama" is us watching someone else's pain, and them being hurt and crying. I can see it is damaging to the people on it, really a dressed up jerry springer . ( watching people get hurt for entertainment)

carmenbea · 09/07/2019 19:22

I doubt Amy would have gone in there having known she would get all this hate and abuse online? She probably thought she would be the queen bee, mum of the villa but it hasn't worked out for her. The producers clearly didn't speak to the contestants enough or she massively down played what she was like in a relationship (not that it's all her fault, Curtis is a prick)

TatianaLarina · 09/07/2019 19:24

I don't think it's fair to say that contestants don't have a clue

I don’t think they don’t have a clue, they may have some idea, but their idea may not be anything like the reality. And they don’t know how they will cope until they’re in it.

When BB started there was no social media. That adds a whole new dimension. Many of the contestants are around 20ish, so they’d only have just been born when BB started.

And people don’t necessarily think a negative edit will happen to them.

Bluntness100 · 09/07/2019 19:26

I'd challenge you to go on there Bluntness

This is the point. I wouldn't go on there. I'm not an idiot. I've seen thr show. I know what the constestants get from the public after, so no I won't go on, I wouldn't apply to go on and I certainly don't believe for one moment the fact some folks are hated after and get shit comments is some big surprise to them.

They go through multiple auditions to get on, they are physiologically tested. They are told what occurs after, what can occur, they are taught about all the sides of fame.

And they still go on. They go through all of it.

So, yes they know. Pretending they don't is laughable.

TatianaLarina · 09/07/2019 19:26

Exactly Carmen.

Amy’s not very bright, she’s a bit of a dreamer. She may have imagined being popular, getting a bf and coming out to riches. Not being dumped on national TV and her parents getting death threats.

Bluntness100 · 09/07/2019 19:29

I would agree they all think they will be very popular, that's why they go on. So yes the fact they are not may surprise them. But that's very different to saying they don't know.

Jesus the producers have put out articles about how they prepare them. Support them, and what they do for them after. It's no surprise to them what can happen.

The surprise is it happened to them.
