The Handmaid's Tale (RTE paced series 3)

I've just caught up with episode 3 and have a random question.

Whilst being a bit distracted by all the backlighting I was wondering about Serena-Joy's mother.

Anyone know why she would have such a high status? She was in black (I think I was finding colours difficult with the backlight!!) so assume symbolises widowed. But why would a woman remain at such a status if the man was dead. It was all his property and wealth. In fact do we know what happens to widows (I've a vague recall there was something about this - or it might be a disgraced commander's wife I'm recalling.)

Oh and what's Commander Laurence up to. He's so as capricious as Aunt Lydia I can't figure his convictions out just like her!!!

I'm watching on RTE also but I don't know the answer to your questions. Sorry

RedForShort · 20/06/2019 07:44

Well least there's one other poster on here now 😁

Didn't want to Google it in case I spoil the series for myself. I'll wait till it's finished to see if I can find the answers.

There are two other threads going at the moment on The Handmaids Tale. If you don't want to see the spoilers you could simply use the arrow at the title of the thread ( on the mobile app) and it takes you to the end of the thread and you could ask your questions there, so you'll avoid the spoilers.

RedForShort · 20/06/2019 20:15

Yeah. One's ahead and the other behind RTE (i think).

Was sort of hoping to be able to discuss episodes as we watched!! Evidently not that many on here watching RTE!!

I’m watching on RTE also.

I just can’t get a read on Lawrence at all. He seems to be mildly curious about the impact his writings have had, beyond that he’s disinterested. I’m sure there has to be more to him than that, but as yet I can’t see it.

Dulra · 20/06/2019 21:32

I'm watching on rte too. No idea about widows either 🤔 I guess she stays in the home they lived in but not sure why she retains her wealth.

I think cmdr Lawrence is very unhinged I guess june hit the nail on the head when she mentioned that he deals with the guilt of creating such a horrific regime by doing the odd good deed such as helping handmaids and marthas escape but he is definitely not to be trusted thankfully june has realised now so will hopefully be a bit more careful

Encyclo · 20/06/2019 21:45

She surprised him at the end with her decisive choices. I think that’s the way to handle him, keep him guessing. He doesn’t like to be bored apparently.

RedForShort · 21/06/2019 05:26

Lawrence makes me nervous (well they all do!!). The whole thing with the book was nasty. Especially it being a book, considering she isn't allowed to read and he would know she liked to.

What do they think they can do about the baby in Canada? Would it be a kidnapping and Canada has to return her?

beanaseireann · 21/06/2019 12:56

I haven't watched episode 3 yet. I've to psyche myself up for its darkness Sad

Encyclo · 21/06/2019 14:37

Poor Janine. Also, June’s new walking partner is annoying as fuck. I’m hoping she flips like one of her previous walking partners (Ofglen 2?)

RedForShort · 21/06/2019 18:11

I think June's walking partner absolutely will go rogue. She's had three babies taken from her.

OP posts:
Encyclo · 21/06/2019 21:40

She definitely had a moment when she saw her son, before she snapped back into koolaid mode

beanaseireann · 22/06/2019 15:29

Why did June acknowledge that she knew her husband and gave his name ?
I thought she'd deny him for his own safety and that of Nicole.
Poor Janine.
What do you think will happen to Aunt Lydia ?
She certainly lost the plot!

I find it amazing that June could waltz around the house and go to the pool room and have a fag with Serena without anyone noticing.
But in Series 1 I was amazed there was so little CCTV especially scenes with Nick - in the hospital etc.

beanaseireann · 29/06/2019 16:24

Help please.
My tv failed to record ep 3 or 4 on Thursday. SadIt did record but all fuzzy. What did I miss ?
Channel 4 is a week behind

beanaseireann · 29/06/2019 21:06

Is the Handmaids tale repeated on RTE 2

RedForShort · 29/06/2019 21:15

I'm sure it's repeated during the week. Would be suprised if it weren't on the player!!

OP posts:
beanaseireann · 30/06/2019 09:57

I can't find it on the player and checked the listings for the week. Sad
I'll contact RTE.
That stupid recorder- it had no problem recording other stuff- aghhhh!

beanaseireann · 01/07/2019 16:01

Please could somebody give me a recap on what happened in last Thursday's episode.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3, episode 5: Unknown Caller

A SUMMARY

SPOILER ALERT (OBVIOUSLY!!)

Unknown Caller followed on from the previous episode, which saw June and the Waterfords find out Nicole had made it to Canada and was being looked after by Luke.

In a grocery store at the start of the episode, June thinks about the “miracle” that left her baby safe but then decides against the word miracle as she was the one who ensured Nicole’s safety.

Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) attends a meeting about what Gilead is going to do about Nicole, while Serena waits outside.

However, Waterford demands Serena be present, so she too enters the meeting and learns through the baby’s medical records that she is healthy, happy and even has a tooth.

Later, they visit June at Commander Lawrence’s (Bradley Whitford) home and ask her to set up a meeting with Luke in Canada, which June agrees to on the condition Serena owe her a favour.

The Guardians give June permission to call her husband and after an emotional call he agrees to meet Serena not Waterford.

In a conversation with Mrs Lawrence (Julie Dretzin) about how hard it was to make the call, Mrs Lawrence reveals that Commander Lawrence used to make her mixtapes which are all in the basement.

The next day, June goes down into the basement and uses their cassette player to record a message for Luke.

Serena prepares for her trip to Canada and is given the tape by Rita (Amanda Brugel).

She is met in Canada by Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger), the man who previously offered her asylum in Hawaii.

Serena meets with Luke, who demands she tells him where June is and she says she is with Commander Lawrence.

She gets to hold the baby but is told she will never be anything to little Nicole.

On the flight back to Gilead, Serena sees a satellite phone that Tuello put in her bag in case she ever needs to escape.

The next day, June discovers Ofmathew (Ashleigh LaThrop) is pregnant again.

Following this conversation, June is taken by the Guardians to a soundstage, is given new Handmaid’s clothes to wear and is told to stand behind Commander Waterford and Serena in front of cameras.

Elsewhere, Luke listens to the tape, which says Nicole was born of love and urges Luke to move on with his life.

Luke later arrives home, only for Moira to rush in and tell him to turn on the TV, where he sees the Waterfords asking for the Canadian government to return Nicole.

RedforShort
I was able to watch it, thank you

RedForShort · 05/07/2019 13:37

Who's seen this week's?

The silenced handmaids! 🙁😯 so horrific, really disturbing. Are they allowed to make a sound when giving birth (plus how do they eat and drink?)

OP posts:
beanaseireann · 06/07/2019 20:54

RedforShort
I watched it - horrendous and barbaric.
I'm sure there are many places in the world today.where women are silenced.
I'm a bit Hmmre June being able to slip off to meet Nick in the garden ( and elsewhere in other episodes) and wander around people's houses - is there no CCTV ?
Why did she name Nick to the Canadians and Luke previously to the Waterfords?
Surely that puts them in danger.
