Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 US PACE! ##Spoilers for UK viewers##

AcrossthePond55 · 06/06/2019 00:47

We had a similar thread for season 2. This is specifically for those watching on Hulu in the US/elsewhere or UK streaming at the US pace so there be spoilers ahead for those watching at UK pace.

Please no spoilers if anyone has ‘advance knowledge’ of season 3 beyond the current episodes.

I’ve watched 2 of the 3 episodes dropped today. I’m pretty satisfied with things so far..I admit I got a bit emotional when it was clear that Emily and Nichole made it to Canada.

My only niggle right now is Mrs Lawrence. It’s pretty obvious she’s suffering from some type of MH condition. Yet everyone (pro Gilead)seems to buy Cdr Lawrence’s ‘she’s just tired’ or whatever excuses. Seems to me they’d be on the lookout for people outside the acceptable norm and anxious to ‘deal with them’.

I’ll be watching Ep 3 later tonight.

ooo that sounds hopeful across. I’ll be watching it in about 6 hours when I get home from workGrin

Waiting for the latest episode to appear on SB but getting server error message!

Fiderer · 31/07/2019 12:55

Bloody hell, what an episode!

Having double-checked this thread is US paced and it has aired there - I can also say I didn't see that coming with the Waterfords though I had wondered what their plan in contacting Tuello was. They surely hadn't expect him to hand over Nichole?

My main question (after I'd finished yes-ing! as Fred was arrested) was if that was what Serena had planned? First her assertion last week that Fred was more interested in his Gilead position than getting Nichole back. This episode her uneasy behaviour, the questions and comments to Fred at that house make me wonder if the deal with Tuello was for her to get Fred drive there and she'd be taken to Canada and allowed to see Nichole instead of being arrested. She wasn't told she was being arrested when they took her.

Loved the soldiers coming out of the woods, was eyeing the trees as Tuello got out of the car and it was also signposted by the longer than expected drive and in particular the aerial view over the odd looking bridge. But the unexpected happens so often in THT - it was v satisfactory that it did turn out like that.

Now Winslow and Waterford are gone maybe the other commanders will bring back Lawrence and when "they" do come for them it'll be to reinstate him. I know we mainly saw Winslow & Fred being so critical of Lawrence and perhaps the others went along with it in fear of their own positions. He remains one of the architects of Gilead.

The scene in Jezebels was a bit contrived with the coincidences of Winslow seeing her and the Martha being one of the ones that June saved but in the end, Winslow was incinerated. Bastard "My children" Angry

Also liked the head Marthas confronting June. And the art deal June offered Billy. Did I understand it properly that Lawrence had raided American museums after the US fell to Gilead and that's why he has so many paintings?

That was long! Need [tea]

xiona75 · 31/07/2019 13:16

Holy moly! After so many episodes where not a lot happened-they packed a whole lot into this one!
I liked the Marthas who were concerned that June doing her own thing was going to impact the work they were doing, and they were right to call her out.
Was so disappointed with cmdr Lawrence when he bugged out with his wife, but very surprised when he came back. I was a bit confused as to wether he managed to get his wife out or if he'd just taken her out into a field and put her out of her misery-did anyone else understand it better?
I know he came back because the code word or whatever on the check points has changed.
June and Winslow at jezebels-what a fantastic scene-and greatly satisfied at the marthas heaving his carcas into the incinerator :) and then Serena and Fred...wow. I too am wondering if Serena has helped to set Fred up, the look she had on her face when Fred said "she's going to grow up to be just like you" alright I'll stop now lol two episodes left!!!

xiona75 · 31/07/2019 13:18

@Fiderer good thought on how the other commanders will act now that Fred and Winslow are both gone-or will they call on nick to fill the empty shoes???

ArabellaDoreenFig · 31/07/2019 14:04

Just watched. Bloody hell!!! Loved the arrest, loved it!

Also enjoyed June taking out Winslow and the Martha’s tidying up.

Can’t wait for the final 2 episodes. Wish I had the patience to wait so I could watch them back to back, I won’t though!

Will be back to discuss later!

May the Lord open!

AcrossthePond55 · 31/07/2019 14:04

Oh wow, Fiderer, I didn't think about a 'double cross'! I just figured Serena's only thought was to get Nichole back and Fred was willing to do anything rather than lose her. Now I can't decide who was double crossed by whom! Did Serena know about the whole thing and threw Fred under the bus to get Nichole back or was she double crossed too? I did think she looked upset & surprised though when Fred was arrested. I gave a huge fist pump and a 'yes' too. I just can't decide what I want to happen to Serena. After all, she's guilty of assisting in Fred's rape of Handmaids, and I suppose being an accessory to slavery. Is part of a possible 'deal' that she gets immunity or will she be seen as being a victim herself?

I also gasped at the scene in the woods where Fred said "You would have left because I couldn't give you a child". He's made it clear that he knows that Nichole isn't his bio child. I know he was told it (in anger) by June last season, but this is the first I really knew that he believed her.

That arrest scene really raised a question for me. How far would I go to get my children back. Would I betray & possibly sacrifice my husband? In the 'Handmaid Universe' I assume Canada still doesn't have the death penalty, but does whatever International Court he'd be tried before have it? And if he's going to be tried in (what remains of) a US Federal court, they DO have the death penalty (in the 'real world'). At any rate, I hope they do an in depth storyline following his trial.

I didn't think the Winslow murder was too terribly contrived. After all, we've known that June is at the breaking point for some time now. Not surprised that she 'snapped'. And I loved (if you can use that word) the incinerator scene. The symbolism re the furnaces in Nazi death camps being used to get rid of their victims was obvious. And I think the Martha being there (& the Marthas confronting June) just showed how huge the network is. And that the arrogance of the conquerers will always cause defeat by the 'lowest' if the lowest can get their shit together.

I wondered what happened to Mrs L, too. But then when June was talking to Billy she said "a Cdr and his wife" as far as who would be on the plane, so Mrs L must be back in the house. There was an offscreen piece of dialogue from Cdr L outside the room when he first came home, but I didn't catch what he was saying. Maybe about taking Mrs L upstairs or something? Did anyone catch it? And I found it interesting that he only came back because they couldn't get the papers to get across the border. An uneasy alliance. Each must know that the other will throw them under the bus if need be. And what did he mean by 'they're coming for us'? Why? Because he tried to 'defect'? Or just because he knows he's being 'pushed out' of the Inner Circle & needs to be eliminated? And now that Fred & Winslow are both out of the picture, will that noose around Cdr L's neck be removed, or at least loosened?

I think all the art June offered Billy is the Gilead equivalent of the stolen Nazi art. Some from museums, but I'll bet a lot of it was taken off people who were executed when Gilead took over the US. Or used as bribes to get out when things got hot for 'traitors'.

There are two episodes left.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 31/07/2019 15:32

I wonder how Winslow being missing will be explained- Jezebel’s doesn’t officially exist so will there be an investigation or just a hush up?

And will it start a wider crackdown- is life going to become more strict and hypocrisy no longer allowed (even unofficial but allowed hypocrisy like Jezebel’s)

I think Serena knew they were going to be arrested. She’s given them Fred in exchange for immunity
(about damn time too misses!)

She knows she has no real claim to Nichole and I think she’s hoping to rebuild her life, maybe be allowed to keep in contact with Nichole (even from afar) I think she will be integral to the bringing down of Gilead- from the outside now, whilst we watch June and the Martha’s bring it down from the inside.

AcrossthePond55 · 31/07/2019 16:16

I was wondering that too Arabella. Jezebel's doesn't exist so he couldn't possibly have disappeared from there, right? Although I have a feeling that 'mysterious disappearances' aren't too uncommon in Gilead. He's too high up to sweep in under the rug so I have a feeling they'll blame it on 'The Resistance' (real or imagined) and use it as an excuse for further 'Salvagings'.

Possibly they'll try to tie it in with the Waterford's arrest(s) and blame what's left of the US? It showed Fred being led in front of a line of uniformed people with American Flag patches, so I assume it was US Forces that nabbed him. Although he was put in vehicle with a Canadian Flag stencil I don't remember seeing Canadian patches on uniforms of the troops that came out of the woods.

OP posts:
Fiderer · 31/07/2019 17:00

We also don't know how powerful the commanders who wouldn't use Jezebels are even if it's known to exist. We have little idea of the power structure apart from Waterford and Winslow. Whether the ones there that night would admit to having seen him.

Reckon you might be right about blame being put on the Resistance or the Americans, in an attempt to stir up international outrage. Or both, reprisals in Gilead and PR abroad and Canada being shown to not be the baddies.

Just hope they don't bring in the Swiss again, they were pretty ineffectual. Unless there was some deal with Nick they couldn't disclose.

Fiderer · 31/07/2019 17:01
  • to be the baddies (in this instance)
WellWhoKnew · 31/07/2019 17:22

Jezebel's will be publicly known as a "hotel" so likely his death will be explained as a terrorist who feigned a job. That's my best guess.

Cracking episode I thought. More like series 1.

Becles · 31/07/2019 18:03

Just watched on YouTube, it was such a dense episode

Fiderer · 31/07/2019 19:50

In this recap it says Luke was there when the Americans captured the Waterfords.

With screenshot

Looks like him. He's not in uniform as everyone else is. And Moira behind him? One hell of a moment for them if so.

AcrossthePond55 · 31/07/2019 21:23

😲😲😲 I think that IS Luke! Revenge must have been so sweet for him. But it ain't over yet. Will Gilead demand Fred's return saying he was 'tricked' or 'kidnapped'?

UserNameDeletedShortly · 31/07/2019 21:29

I really like that we're only now realising how much quiet power the Martha's have.

I never paid attention to them before. Shuffling around silently cleaning and cooking, not far off the very bottom of the social hierarchy, they did/do everything they can to make themselves as invisible as possible.

The Martha's have access to a shit tonne of sensitive areas, their power is hidden in plain old frumpy site.

shimmersun · 31/07/2019 23:07

When Fred said to Serena about driving, and they got out to swap seats, she looked back the way they had came, and that was when I thought she was setting him up. Also the fact that he said her idea for them to drive themselves was a good one...so she planned it that way so they had no guards with them.

I think she has weighed it up, Gilead isn't the best thing for Nichole, and she wants to be with Nichole, so she will have to get to her. Losing him is another sacrifice, the way she let Nichole go in the first place...I guess they are trying to compare June and Serena in their mother's love and the lengths they will go to.

Or I could be wrong and she was double crossed too. But since she wasn't arrested in the same way he was, I don't think so.

Boom25 · 31/07/2019 23:34

Serena definitely traded Fred for Nichole.

Check out next weeks trailer

Aridane · 01/08/2019 01:00

Hmm - not sure about that episode. Can't articulate why though

Aridane · 01/08/2019 01:04

Can we discuss spoilers here (or was that another thread)? In any case, here is the promo for next week which goes some way to answering our questions

I really like the character of Serena, she has so much more depth and her character arc makes sense. The actress is fab, she plays it in such an understated and intelligent way. I love the conflict in serena, that this is what she wanted but she didn’t think she was going to be treat the same as the other women. A classic ‘I’m not like the other girls’.

I’m sad that this might mean that the series going to be is even more focused on June and her hair brain schemes.
I can’t understand how she suddenly has so much power now. Why exactly is commander Lawrence and his wife so in awe of her? What superpower has she been proven to have?

I’ve said this before but it’s all one tone with the June storyline. There’s no break exact when she looks at the camera and swears for the 100millionth time.

What I loved about the book was the suffocating feeling that you couldn’t trust anyone and the dizzying sensation of having no power or anywhere to anchor yourself.

We haven’t met anyone NOT in the resistance for ages.

I also want to know more about Gilead, there’s so much not answered. I’m not interested in June. I want to know more about how the power structures in Gilead work, how exactly it came to power, what normal peoples lives are like.

furrytoebean · 01/08/2019 09:27

In the novel Offred is the classic ‘ordinary person in extraordinary circumstances’, it Might be Offreds story but it’s actually the story of all the handmaids.
Her very ordinaries is the point. She’s an every woman.

By making her a hero, giving her a specialness it’s shifted the focus of the story, it’s no longer a everywoman story and now just an adventure story.

xiona75 · 01/08/2019 18:41

Well the trailer definitely shows that Serena was in on it :) she's the one you just love to hate but I'm glad that she finally realised that Gilead was no good for Nichole. It's been a long time coming for her to actually see what they have created and that Nichole would have been trapped just as SHE was.

Aria2015 · 01/08/2019 18:50

Am I crazy for thinking that Serena could be pregnant after her last ’night’ with the commander? That would be quite a good twist - not that I think she necessarily deserves that ’happy’ ending but it would mean she would probably leave her bid to get Nicole back alone.
