Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 US PACE! ##Spoilers for UK viewers##

We had a similar thread for season 2. This is specifically for those watching on Hulu in the US/elsewhere or UK streaming at the US pace so there be spoilers ahead for those watching at UK pace.

Please no spoilers if anyone has ‘advance knowledge’ of season 3 beyond the current episodes.

I’ve watched 2 of the 3 episodes dropped today. I’m pretty satisfied with things so far..I admit I got a bit emotional when it was clear that Emily and Nichole made it to Canada.

My only niggle right now is Mrs Lawrence. It’s pretty obvious she’s suffering from some type of MH condition. Yet everyone (pro Gilead)seems to buy Cdr Lawrence’s ‘she’s just tired’ or whatever excuses. Seems to me they’d be on the lookout for people outside the acceptable norm and anxious to ‘deal with them’.

I’ll be watching Ep 3 later tonight.

Me too! Grin

And yes i think you are right about Fred, he can’t have any transgressions now so he will have to make Serena comply by any means necessary

furrytoebean · 25/07/2019 11:08

I wonder if they’ll bring the rings in for the wives...

Aridane · 25/07/2019 13:54

Elliott Stabler, FFS

Aridane · 25/07/2019 13:54

)very distracting- and not in a good way)

Aridane · 25/07/2019 13:55

What was the comment Elliott made when seeing Janine’s Eye patch?

AcrossthePond55 · 25/07/2019 14:04

Oh, I hope AL doesn't end up on the wall. After seeing her backstory, I'd rather she end up dying heroically whilst protecting the (hopefully) escaping children. Doing something redemptive, at any rate. AL is such a compelling yet repellant character. I hate her, yet pity her. And Ann Dowd is superb.

Rings for the wives? I don't think that will happen. 'Wife' is an 'honoured' position in Gilead, and they're also a 'propaganda showpiece' for other countries.

Where I get stuck with the rescuing children is; not only would the household Marthas have to escape with the children to save their own lives, so would the handmaid-mothers of those children.

If they don't take the Marthas, you'll have a group of screaming, struggling children who think they're being kidnapped. And once they get to Canada they're going to have to have some legal reason to keep them there, and that would be the DNA tie to the mother. That's the danger facing Nichole; both of her parents (June and supposedly Fred) are in Gilead. That really weakens the case for keeping Nichole in Canada.

Ariadne Cdr Winslow said the eyepatch 'wasn't regulation'. AL tried to explain it away by saying that Janine had been attacked and it was by way of a 'special treat' for her.

I assume that Winslow probably believes that the eyepatch is a 'vanity' as well as being non-conforming.

Oops, Aridane. Sorry for the misspelling

Ah, thanks - did Jeannine lose her eye as a punishment or accident?

AcrossthePond55 · 25/07/2019 15:14

Punishment per the Old Testament Biblical "If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out".

She lost it as punishment for telling AL to 'fuck off' during indoctrination in the Red Center early in the first season. It's also the reason she is mentally unstable.

Interesting that Janine has had the unsightly gouged eye for years but now it's been infected after the attack from OfM - AL gets her (has it made I assume) an eyepatch.

Is it possible that Serena is now playing Fred? She is asking him to cooperate to get Nicole back, but maybe this is a pretence and she actually will end up staying in Canada?

She seemed quite affected by them arranging the ceremony, Fred won’t let go of June, she saw Eleanor devestated. Maybe she has finally realised that even if Nicole becomes a wife in Gilead, her life will be hell.

boringlyboring · 25/07/2019 15:53

Nick must make an appearance at some point too, maybe he has been facilitating a rebellion where he is.

This episode has given me too much hope, if they take it away I will be fuming.

Skaife · 25/07/2019 16:42

Just so I can read the thread later.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/07/2019 18:25

I hope Nick does make his reappearance. They left that as such a cliffhanger. All that was said was that he served in the Gilead army during the war. So, is Nick still pro-Gilead or is he not? It wasn't clearly shown.

maybe he has been facilitating a rebellion where he is.

They showed him on board an army transport in (apparently) a position of some authority. Of course that doesn't mean he isn't working from within to destabilize the regime.

This was the episode I was waiting for.

I loved the role reversal in the ceremony. June comforting Eleanor and telling Lawrence that it was a transaction, and the cold hard reality of Gilead hitting him straight in the face. And I agree that we didn't need the graphics for it to be hard hitting. It was done well.

I am also curious as to what has been going on with Nick, and how he will come in to it all. Can he be trusted? Does he really love June? So many questions.

"We're going to need a bigger boat" and all the muffins! :o

Aridane · 26/07/2019 08:26

The post coital contraception (‘a souvenir from before ‘) and June’s response: “the punishment for contraception is being torn apart by dogs” Shock

KitKat1985 · 26/07/2019 09:50

Did June take the morning after pill in the end? I wasn't clear on that bit.

furrytoebean · 26/07/2019 09:59

Yeah I think there was a shot of her taking it at the end of the episode

Aridane · 26/07/2019 10:34

Yes she did

AcrossthePond55 · 26/07/2019 12:52

I didn't think if it as the MAP. I thought it was BC pills to guard against future pregnancies since they both realize this won't be the only times they're forced into the Ceremony.

Aridane · 26/07/2019 13:13

Ah yes - you’re probably right ‘

AcrossthePond55 · 31/07/2019 05:58

Well, I certainly didn't see THAT coming!!!!!
