I thought he didn't want to go back because he felt guilty about the event where he got injured. Everyone treated him like a hero but he'd actually fucked up or something. Something to do with kids? There was no hint about it being a sexuality thing. It just makes no sense.

Maybe the writers have thrown this together because Kathy is opening a new bar so it's just more people to go there!

I agree it doesn't make any sense with the army stories. I suspect that Stuart / Linda or mick would have guessed long ago as well as they knew him as a kid.
