Fleabag - anyone else not get on with it?

I tried hard to like Fleabag, and I normally love this and of thing, and love edgy comedy, pathos and female led stuff - but for some reason, although I could "appreciate" it, it never clicked with me.

I was thinking about it and remembered I didn't like Girls either (even though I watched all of it too) but Lena Dunham I just found unlikeable, and I know its deeply unfashionable thing to say butt I think I felt the same about Fleabag / PWB. It's not the whole "flawed character" type stuff that's an issue - as I say I normally like that kind of thing (E.g. I loved Saga in The Bridge who can be really unpleasant to people). I just wasn't rooting for the character and didn't care about her.

Am I the only woman in the UK to feel his way?

Yes.

VictoriaReal · 09/04/2019 16:55

Haha! I knew someone would say that! Grin

Which series did you watch and how much of it?

(Surely everyone loves Saga, though Confused)

ChicCroissant · 09/04/2019 19:44

We didn't like Fleabag either.

Gomyownway · 09/04/2019 19:45

Girls was awful, and I haven’t met a soul in real life who actually liked it.

It’s much easier to root for fleabag in season 2 imo. I love the show, but I personally find Claire much easier to empathise with.

groundcontroltomontydon · 09/04/2019 20:09

I couldn't get into the first series at all. I really enjoyed the second series - funny, poignant, fabulous cast (Sian Clifford is brilliant) - but it didn't knock my socks off. Maybe I'm just dead on the inside.

BentCoppersOnly · 09/04/2019 20:11

It is a very particular type of show. There were parts of the first series where I felt it was trying a bit too hard. The second series was much more human, in my opinion. I still love it. Tbf there’s only 12 x 30 min episodes so not like it would take a lot of time to get through.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/04/2019 20:12

Tried three episodes. Not for me.

PineapplePatty · 09/04/2019 20:13

We thought the ending wasn't great and both much preferred the first series.

I don't think the priest was right. I'm not a fan of his.

PineapplePatty · 09/04/2019 20:15

I was surprised people cried at it too. I'm must be dead inside.

I don’t get it at all, it makes me cringe with all the knowingness and what have you

Someone said it’s like an X-rated Miranda and that makes sense to me, can’t stand that either

DH OTOH loves it, he can watch it on his ownSmile

TigerDroveAgain · 09/04/2019 20:20

Ha! Cross posted

icanhearapindrop · 09/04/2019 20:32

No, I didn’t like it. DH thought it was amazing, and hilarious, but I sat through 2 episodes very bored. I’m feeling maybe I should give it another go as it was clearly so popular, but not sure I can bring myself to!

icanhearapindrop · 09/04/2019 20:33

I’m also not a fan of Miranda. Maybe there’s something in that kind of humour.

minxthemanx · 09/04/2019 20:37

I didn't really like it. Not sure why. Felt a bit forced and contrived. I too like Saga though.😁

Almahart · 09/04/2019 20:42

I didn’t like it at all when it came out but went back to series one after all the hype of series two and am enjoying it this time I do think series one is a bit overrated though

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 09/04/2019 20:47

I literally turned season 1 episode 1 off after five minutes within the last half hour.

Call me a prude, but I didnt find the opening with the one night stand funny or interesting at all. Just made me feel really uncomfortable.

PinguDance · 09/04/2019 20:49

I didn’t like the first series so haven’t watched the second - I just thought it was ridiculous and found all the characters and scenarios intensely irritating. I couldn’t get over the fact the family are so rich either, I can normally overlook the whole ‘oh we’re just average middle class we just happen to live in an enormous beautiful house in zone 2’ which is the telly version of being ‘middle class’ (aka catastrophe) but I couldn’t in Fleabag and just wanted them all to fuck off. and calm

AFistfulofDolores1 · 09/04/2019 20:53

I didn't watch the first series.

I watched the second, though.

Amazing.

VictoriaReal · 09/04/2019 21:04

I watched all of series 1 and the first 3 of series 2 and then I just sort of gave up.

I felt like I must be missing something which is why I persevered but never enjoyed it (obviously some fab performances from Olivia Coleman and love Bill Patterson, but as I said, just didn't root for Fleabag).

Not sure if there's a deep down feeling I have towards PWB as I find her rather upper middle class and privileged - but this is possibly total projection on my part I freely admit.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 09/04/2019 21:07

I'm not a fan. I'm just not rooting for her and I don't find it entertaining.

VictoriaReal · 09/04/2019 21:08

Haha Pingu, that is so true!

Hated Fleabag. Hated Killing Eve.

I know this makes me abnormal.

But I loved Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Solo ...

HelloJackieYouLookNice · 09/04/2019 21:15

I gave up after 10 minutes for the same reasons as Penny. Plus it wasn’t funny!
