Fleabag - anyone else not get on with it?

I tried hard to like Fleabag, and I normally love this and of thing, and love edgy comedy, pathos and female led stuff - but for some reason, although I could "appreciate" it, it never clicked with me.

I was thinking about it and remembered I didn't like Girls either (even though I watched all of it too) but Lena Dunham I just found unlikeable, and I know its deeply unfashionable thing to say butt I think I felt the same about Fleabag / PWB. It's not the whole "flawed character" type stuff that's an issue - as I say I normally like that kind of thing (E.g. I loved Saga in The Bridge who can be really unpleasant to people). I just wasn't rooting for the character and didn't care about her.

Am I the only woman in the UK to feel his way?

I think it's worth watching to the end. Some of her behaviour was apalling but it was supposed to be. The point was she was using sex/stealing etc to fill the void left by her mother's death. The series seemed to be about her realisation that this was what she was doing.

Couldn't get into Fleabag for ages - watched the first episode and hated it. Wanted to watch the second series purely because of Andrew Scott so forced myself to watch series 1 first.

I absolutely adore the whole thing. And the last episode of series 2 made me cry.

“Xrated Miranda” genius comment! TigerDroveAgain!

Don’t hate it, doesn’t make me laugh or cry...
Not my things good luck to all who enjoyed it, people have different tastes.

Killing Eve was fun.

I love Succession on Now TV, best thing I’ve seen in years.

Simeone said it’s like an X-rated Miranda and that makes sense to me, can’t stand that either

Miranda was fun

Watched the first few minutes of Fleabag and it came across a bit like aren't I fantastic, I got a show on the telly so what ever I say you will find hilarious

I can decide on a programme or film in under 10 seconds. I found those first few seconds tedious

Miranda with sex and fewer pratfalls. Not a fan of either.

Really enjoyed the stage version of Fleabag, thought S1 was okay and S2 was good. The best parts were the family dynamics. The sex scenes were yawn-inducing/cliched.

PWB is incredibly privileged and there's nothing 'jealous' about pointing that out.

Bumping this because I am on episode 2 and I’m just not seeing it. Worth keeping going or not ?

ShowOfHands · 01/01/2020 21:22

@ElloBrian stick with it. I struggled at first too. It is the most nuanced and beautiful portrayal of a broken woman. It's funny and heartbreaking and clever.

I can see every woman I love in Fleabag and every woman I love was similarly moved by the series. 99% of the time, I live and let live with personal preferences but irl, every single person I've spoken to who didn't like it, had peculiar opinions about women anyway or, on discussion, hadn't understood the pathos or the implied in Fleabag. It is superb.

So I am watching Fleabag Series 1, just can't get on with it. Feels like she is trying too hard. Episode 1 hard going, Episode 2 nope not working either. Tried watching after a glass of wine but no difference.

Poetryinaction · 28/06/2020 23:02

I hated it.

Inkanta · 28/06/2020 23:14

Yes agree - it's like she's trying too hard to be funny. And a bit smug. I tried to like it too.
