daddyorchipsdaddyorchips · 26/03/2019 15:30

@DinaCaliente - there is a Pose soundtrack podcast on BBC Sounds. It's excellent!

DinaCaliente · 27/03/2019 09:30

@daddyorchipsdaddyorchips

Thank you Grin

I'm 7 episodes in and I love it. The acting isn't always brilliant but my God Billy Porter gives me goosebumps. I sobbed when he sang the Donnie Hathaway song in the hospital. Can't wait to see how it pans out.

Gatehouse77 · 27/03/2019 18:12

I've only watched the first episode and have seen some Drag Race stuff when DD watches.

What I can't understand is why they all speak so nastily to each other. Even their compliments seem like snide digs. I don't get why they seem to constantly call each other bitch - it's rude, insulting and often meant to be offensive?

TattyOldbit · 27/03/2019 21:06

Tales of the City author Armistead Maupin's "there's your biological family and there's your logical family" writ large. Change takes time though and I think we're going in the right direction.

EachandEveryone · 28/03/2019 20:49

I cannot stop watching it. Just brilliant.

Fazackerley · 29/03/2019 07:39

I started liking it then last night thought, god this is vacuous and turned it off.
It's just...What they do, the balls, is so...stupid and celeb obsessed and empty. I'm clearly far too old for it.

DinaCaliente · 29/03/2019 09:34

The balls were the one place they felt accepted and where they could fully be themselves.

This is the 80's we are talking about and trans women (and men, they also had drag kings) would have got a lot of grief in America at that time.
A lot of the categories are to do with passing as a biological woman...i.e. the Realness categories.
Other realness categories were about POC being accepted in day to day life like the Executive Realness category.
And the voguing, omg that is amazing, no wonder Madonna borrowed it.

When their own families had nothing to do with them, being with a Haus gave them a new family.

I love it.
I'm trying to watch it slowly and not binge though as I don't want it to end (but season 2 should be out soon)

Fazackerley · 29/03/2019 09:36

Yes I understand all that and I remember being really struck by it in the actual 80s, it seemed a wonderful thing. Just seems so shallow now.

PigeonofDoom · 29/03/2019 10:43

Watch the doc ‘Paris is Burning’ Fazakarly. There’s a lot of background and explanation in there about how and why the ballroom scene started and how it gave people who were at the very bottom of the pile in society a chance to be who they wanted to but couldn’t. Hence ‘executive realness’. What do you think your actual chances of becoming an exec employee were in the real world for a gay, non-white street kid? Zilch.
My one criticism of Pose is they don’t quite show just how grim life was for a lot of these kids outside of the ballrooms. This was their escape and a chance to shine.

Fazackerley · 29/03/2019 10:45

YES I think that's what's wrong with it. The contrast isn't there. I have seen that doc and thought it was really interesting

staydazzling · 03/04/2019 18:49

just binged watched it, I enjoyed it more than expected, at first episode I thought, this maybe tooo camp even for me, but it does really improve. First thought Ryan Murphy does better with true events, than fiction and i feel like the gravity of the prejudice, how bad NYC was in those days and the AIDS epidemic made it watchable and emotional. The versace series was brill. aswell, Angel is very beautiful and passes well but I think MJ Rodriguez has the most feminine pretty face, quite doe eyed.

DinaCaliente · 11/04/2019 09:41

Season 2 due June this year.

Set in the 90's around the time Madonna released Vogue.

XiCi · 17/04/2019 20:20

Have just binge watched this and absolutely loved it. Really looking forward to season 2.

EachandEveryone · 17/04/2019 22:43

I hope it doesnt pass over the years too quickly otelse we wont have many seasons 😔

staydazzling · 02/11/2019 17:55

Anyone watching Season 2?? ,its set in 1990 x

Brynssatnav · 03/11/2019 20:15

Yep me! I love it. I love Billy Porter. Wasn't too impressed with the last episode as I felt it went off course a bit. I would have been around 12/13 when Madonna released Vogue and i remember watching a documentary about voguing. I was transfixed. I really love this series and can't wait to see how it pans out.

staydazzling · 03/11/2019 23:15

paris os burning? its on netflix, its grim isnt it? in an important way, i think they should have aired it alongside, Ryan Murphy glosses things up a lot, you dont get the impression of how grim it was.

EachandEveryone · 03/11/2019 23:18

Do you think it has many more seasons in it?

staydazzling · 04/11/2019 10:22

not sure tbh, i think itll maybe one more but thats it. just seen episode 4 very sad.

EachandEveryone · 04/11/2019 13:42

Oh dont tell me. Im up to 3.

staydazzling · 04/11/2019 18:16

oh ok 🤫

staydazzling · 04/11/2019 18:37
