In the Guardian this morning. Cannot find an emoticon that displays what I think of this...and it is far too early for words.

love David Tennant but my heart is truly with the fab Christopher Eccleston

OK going to c&p my post from the geeks thread

'I've been having a think about this whilst drinking my coffee, and reading some comments on a scifi forum. Initially my thoughts were 'oh bugger', but actually I think it's going to be fine. Ok she was a bit shouty and manic on TRB, but it was a shouty and manic episode. The end scene was pretty subtle and quite touching, and if her character stays like that, it'll be pretty good. Martha will be back half way through anyway, it's not like she's really 'gone' gone.'

Look, when Billie was announced as the first Companion, everyone whinged until we saw she was actually OK. When she left and they bought in Martha, everyone whinged again and now Tate is in....surprise, surprise lots of whinging. I'm going to trust in RTD, and wait and see what S4 actually like. I'll admit I'd have preferred sexy pediatrician/rebel fighter or for Jack to have stayed, but sadly DW doesn't run around my smutty fantasies

cupcakes · 04/07/2007 16:29

oh no, this is dreadful news. dh is going to be gutted.

Agree that Sally Sparrow would have been fantastic.

slayerette · 04/07/2007 18:03

Am going to try to remain balanced. finknottle - quite right about initial reactions to David Tennant so maybe [hopeful yet disbelieving emoticon] Catherine Tate won't be so bad. I didn't hate Martha but she never convinced me as much as Billie did so hey-ho, here we go again, getting used to someone new.

Serenity, why won't Dr Who cater to our smutty sexy doctor/sexy doctor/sexy captain fantasies?

cornsilk · 04/07/2007 18:10

I wanted the doctor to somehow become John Sim. Never mind.
Anyone know when that dinosaur thing with timeholes is back on soon - or at all?

Maybe we should try a telepathic wave energy thingy like the Doctor did.
"Sexy Doctor, Sexy Captain, Sexy Doctor"
"Sexy Doctor, Sexy Captain, Sexy Doctor"
"Sexy Doctor, Sexy Captain, Sexy Doctor"

in sync all around the world to persuade RTD.
I'm in Germany so that's one country. Countdown anyone?

Martha is going to be in too.. but not as much. And she's going to be in Torchwood too. (Martha not CT)

slayerette · 04/07/2007 18:16

Ooh finknottle, I love that idea

"Bum" is the word I've been looking for since I read the news this morning. Thanks, Sobernow
Bum indeed.

DH told me this earlier today...was a little shocked...but will reserve judgement when I see the Christmas episode and when I see her...I would never have thought that anybody could have done as good a job as BP did...biut "martha" really grew on me...maybe CT will too.....

martha is meant to be back some time in the next series

sallysparrow · 04/07/2007 20:37

REALLY would have liked that nice paediatrician to have been the companion! But I suppose they have to keep the totty level up for the blokes.

gothicmama · 04/07/2007 20:46

dh reckons they will have 2 companions at some stage in the next series

moo · 04/07/2007 20:58

I'm disappointed too. I enjoyed the Christmas special but I think her character's Jade-like stupidity, while funny in an hour long special, will get very wearying over the course of a series.

Glad Martha's taking a back seat but really liked the Sally Sparrow character - she would make such a good companion.

Macdog · 04/07/2007 22:26

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

There are no words to express how much I hate, loathe and detest CT

Monkeytrousers · 04/07/2007 22:41

one after her will be love interest

florenceuk · 05/07/2007 14:48

I think the problem with CT is that her character was made out to be deliberately thick and not that adventurous - how can she be a good companion then, unless she gains a lot of gumption in between?

serenity · 05/07/2007 17:01

She's going to be fine, it'll all be OK.

Sorry going to copy and paste again (from a different forum) I'm just too lazy to keep typing the same thing out for different people

With regards to her character during the bulk of TRB............Well she's been seen quite publicly with the Doctor, I'd imagine that at some stage between the end of TRB and the beginning of S4 she would have come into contact with some aspect of Torchwood. Maybe that experience plus the realisation that there's more out there than she ever knew means she'll be more mature/worldlywise/ less annoying? We have no idea what kind of person she'll be when she meets with the Doctor again, but to end up travelling with him for the entire season it's not going to be the self absorbed immature emotionally shocked bride she was through most of TRB.

oggsfrog · 05/07/2007 17:53

No, but she'll still be Catherine Tate , and doesn't seem capable of doing subtle.

I'm really not looking forward to it.

Sally Sparrow would be much better.

bobsmum · 05/07/2007 18:00

Really disappointed by this. Out of all the actors and actresses they could have chosen, they've gone back to someone who at best, got mixed reviews after tRB.

A on off appearance is fine for a comedian in this kind of series - Mark Gatiss, Peter Kay, Simon Pegg all pulled it off for example, but I'm concerned she won't be able to shake the character over-acting thing. She's too strong and recognisable persona to "fit" with the Dr.

I'm excited that Kylie's in it though - I've always liked her and this should be a great chance to camp it up.

And incidentally, d'you know that David Tennant is the first person I've had a real proper crush on since Christian Slater . He really is lovely...sigh.

NoodleStroodle · 05/07/2007 18:01
