Has anyone been watching it? Do you think some of the children are rude 🙈🙈

I've watched most of it tonight. My Ds attends a grammar school and it really hasn't changed much since the 1940's. Unfortunately some of his teachers still use the techniques popular back then. He was only moaning today about a teacher who doesn't teach at all and just makes them copy a powerpoint every lesson, not a lot different to copying work from the blackboard and not understanding it.

ppeatfruit · 18/01/2019 09:38

My thread has disappeared!! Yes I'm watching it, it's very good. I like comparing my school and teaching days. I think the children are just being teenagers (should they be caned for rudeness Mummys ?) I like Tia a lot.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 18/01/2019 14:53

No, but I don’t know if I like it when children are rude 😂😩 maybe il change when my three are teenagers!

Mummy I'm not keen on ANYONE being rude (there are plenty of adults who are IMO and experience) I don't really see why children are singled out to have to be polite.

I loved them in mufti yesterday enjoying life, dressed in pretty clothes in the milk bar rather than sitting down blotting their books and copying from the blackboard! They have lives!

Tiredismymiddlename85 · 18/01/2019 15:13

Yes one of the girls annoyed me. The brown haired girl who moaned about the boys left hand being strapped to the desk.

Tiredismymiddlename85 · 18/01/2019 15:18

But I also don't think the teachers are being strict enough - I'm still on inter war years.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 18/01/2019 15:24

No, I wish the teachers were more strict. There’s a brown haired girl that gets on my nerves 😩🙈

The one on the left annoys me.

Considering the 'headmaster' is being played by the drama teacher I thought he would be better and more in character.

Of course, she shouldn't have cared about a classmate being abused!!!! It's incredible how badly children were treated for many many many years. No wonder violence is still so common in our society.

Tiredismymiddlename85 · 18/01/2019 15:29

@ppeatfruit - I'm not saying she shouldn't moan but unfortunately that's what happened in that time!!! I don't think the children are necessarily embracing the different times.

ppeatfruit · 18/01/2019 15:30

The good thing is that they were comparing how children were treated in the 'old' days and now. The teachers were learning too. Which is how it should be.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 18/01/2019 17:58

Yes that’s the girl I don’t like!! She reminds
Me of all the popular bullies at school 😩

What a nasty thread.

Tiredismymiddlename85 · 18/01/2019 18:15

She was less annoying in the grammar school episode.

Tiredismymiddlename85 · 18/01/2019 18:17

The boy who seems to enjoy all the different food makes me chuckle. I like how in the main they're trying liver etc and actually enjoying it.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 18/01/2019 18:53

Ohhh I love him! He seems to get it! like he’s grateful for it all x

TrashPanda · 18/01/2019 19:07

I just watched the 40s and 50s and at the dance at the end the drama teacher playing the headmaster said 'me and Polly' when welcoming everyone. If even the teachers are getting it wrong, how are the kids supposed to get it.

Housewife2010 · 18/01/2019 21:04

About three of the children weren't holding their pens properly. Surely they should be able to do that.

GoGoGadgetGin · 18/01/2019 21:05

Trash me too! That really annoyed me!

Tiredismymiddlename85 · 18/01/2019 21:10

@Housewife2010 - I noticed that too, it's like they'd never seen a fountain pen before?!! ....Maybe they haven't?!

Aragog · 18/01/2019 21:14

I think this series is a bit different to the previous ones. They are not really in character as much. The teachers and the children that is. Hence, the talking back and exclamations of 'its not fair' 'Im not eating that' type comments. They obviously have a quite light hearted relationship with the teachers for this series which is nice, but means they aren't doing it in the way they were before. The teachers are much less strict than they would have been - so we are not really seeing it as it would have been.

Re pens - I don't think any teen I know uses a fountain pen. They all use biros at school from what I know.

TrashPanda · 18/01/2019 22:26

I do agree Aragog that they're definitely not as immersed in this one. I remember doing a Victorian day at primary school and the teachers there were much stricter than these. It does seem very friendly between teachers and kids.

Housewife2010 · 18/01/2019 22:39

All pens and pencils are held the same way, so the weird way that some of them were holding them must have been uncomfortable. Holding a pencil properly is something that is usually sorted out at primary school.

INeedNewShoes · 18/01/2019 22:47

I watched the first episode but lost interest half way through.

I loved the first series of Back in Time for Dinner. It was so well done and everyone seemed to throw themselves into making it as real as possible.

I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but this current series feels less informative and isn't capturing the atmosphere in quite the same way as previous series.

This is in no way a criticism of the children taking part, but it might have been more effective with actors in all the teacher roles to bring more of a real sense to it.

It all feels a bit disjointed flicking between the presenters and the classroom.

HiGunny · 18/01/2019 22:59

I get the impression that this series is aimed more at young people to make them aware of what life used to be like in school. Not to recreate the experience exactly. If they were too strict with the teens they wouldn't enjoy it!
