21 kids and counting

Just watching the latest episode - how on earth do they afford to run that household? iPhones for the kids, holidays to Spain for 20 people, a new kitchen.

There is no way a bakery would generate that much money. Would channel 4 really pay that well for their participation in the programme?

I really don't think they'll have that problem, what with their rejection of books.

PollyFlinderz · 09/01/2019 15:57

How would you prepare and support that many children through university? With up to 3 at university at once over so many years the costs would really add up

I would be very surprised if that ever became an issue. Yes, Chloe went of to university but she wasn’t long in coming back and I suspect ambition is nurtured in the others.

SusanWalker · 09/01/2019 16:06

To be fair a lot of parents can't afford to support their child through uni. Mine couldn't but they supported me in my ambition to go and with things like lifts and rent free board and lodgings in the holidays.

I suppose though if their income is nearly £50,000 then that might impact how much help their children get. I did get full loan and grant.

animaginativeusername · 09/01/2019 16:36

I don't think the kids are encouraged to get a good education, so not much chance of a university education. As them leaving would mean Noel and Sue doing some actual parenting. Poor kids brainwashed to think that there is nothing for them outside the home. You would parents who had failed at life would want better things for their kids

animaginativeusername · 09/01/2019 16:37

Think*

sandwichtern · 09/01/2019 16:50

Since I've been following this thread thought I'd better watch the programme.
So they went on holiday 2 adults, 20 kids, but checked in 23, who was the 23rd? I thought the last pregnancy was baby 21?

BikeRunSki · 09/01/2019 16:52

@sandwichtern they have grandchildren

sandwichtern · 09/01/2019 16:56

Oh good lord, I see!

Anyhow not got much to add other than the programme is them stating the bleeding obvious most of the time. It's noisy. The food bill is high. It's hard work. No shit.

evaperonspoodle · 09/01/2019 17:27

When I said surrogate mother, I didn't mean literally btw!

Hubanmao · 09/01/2019 17:28

Oh I wouldn’t be too sure!

Aeroflotgirl · 09/01/2019 17:33

All the aspirations those kids have got when they leave school, is working in the Pie shop, and looking after the many kids the parents constantly chug out, with no end in sight.

KittensAndCake · 09/01/2019 18:24

When I said surrogate mother, I didn't mean literally btw!

I know but I wouldn't put it past them 😱🤣

Out of curiosity I looked up the hotel they stayed in in Benidorm. On average two weeks in August for one apartment (sleeps 5) is 4500 euros. They must have had at least 4 so that was a very expensive trip to Spain.

HelenaDove · 10/01/2019 00:28

Good God The very thought!

Calvinsmam · 10/01/2019 09:37

Surely the tv company would have paid for that holiday or it was a freebie from the hotel to promote how family friendly they are.

MaHeidsGouping · 10/01/2019 09:49

Somebody else probably paid. If apartments only sleep 5 then it would be a juggling act to see which adult is taking which 4 children. They usually hire a villa for past holidays...and surely every bit of saving gets put away for Florida rather than heading off to Benidorm at 6 months pregnant.

evaperonspoodle · 10/01/2019 09:50

Yes of course the program paid for it. It does show the sort of money they are being paid for doing it. There is no way if they stopped the media presence that they could afford holidays like that.

Deadringer · 10/01/2019 09:51

To the pp who said that the older children have turned out well, they had a relatively normal upbringing. They were raised in a fairly conventional family, albeit a large one. The younger ones are being raised completely differently, they are on a reality TV show and being parented mostly by their siblings, sadly it's unlikely that they will turn out nearly so well.

cushioncovers · 10/01/2019 15:10

I wonder if the tv company paid for the holiday and conveniently forgot to book them a minibus so they dad to take two cars. Que the drama of Sue getting lost as she wasn't expecting to drive.

potatoscone · 10/01/2019 15:16

It's more likely they were in 2 vehicles because neither of them has a license to drive a 20+ seat minibus.

evaperonspoodle · 10/01/2019 15:50

It said that there was no minibus available. However it is probably something to do with requiring a special license, as if you watch the America episode the same thing happened, with Millie screaming because Sue was driving on the wrong side of the road or something like that. The program is just repeating the same content now every time.

Aeroflotgirl · 10/01/2019 15:53

They did take two minibus, one was driven by Sue and the other by Noel. Sue got lost.

evaperonspoodle · 10/01/2019 20:27

Yes they certainly looked like minibuses to me, but the commentary said no minibuses were available, so they had to get a people carrier or MPV instead.

AlbertWinestein · 11/01/2019 03:46

I'm finally just catching up with this one. I find this family intriguing. I have 4 and stopped as, as much as I could have happily repopulated the world with my gorgeousness, I realised it wasn't a very good idea.

First thing I've noticed is the basic lack of dentistry. I know the older girls have super white, super straight teeth but that was probably a gift from a dentist who wanted an ad. The 17 year old girl has super white teeth but clearly not had braces. The boys all have wonky yellow teeth so are apparently ignored altogether.

Also, there is nothing more manky than beds without bottom sheets on. That's seriously gross and must absolutely stink.

derxa · 11/01/2019 07:39

So what do people propose? Send all the younger children to foster homes and forced sterilisation for Mr and Mrs Radford?
