How would the choose your own adventure but work?

VodkaRevelation · 28/12/2018 11:00

*bit

It’ll get to a certain point in story and you have to select what the next action will be. I’ve tried not to read too much about it yet but here’s a section from an article I skimmed about how they made it -

“To begin with these are mundane – choosing between two songs or breakfast cereals – but they quickly get much more serious. Choices will send viewers branching off in different directions, only to sometimes jackknife back. Along the way, the system remembers past decisions, and these will influence things viewers see later in the episode.

Although most of the people behind the episode refer to it as a film, Weeks, who programmed computer games earlier in his career, likens it to a video game. As viewers make decisions they unlock certain parts of the narrative – a little like finding the key to another level in a game. If they die – and there is more than one way to die – viewers can re-spawn and replay the episode by making different decisions and unlocking different parts of the narrative.”

I’ve just realised I’ve been watching for 2.5 hours so come on here for a break! Any one else tried it yet?

Shortyboo · 28/12/2018 21:11

2.5hrs? How long does it go on for?

We’re loving it so far Smile

TheFirstOHN · 28/12/2018 21:24

I had a go this morning, getting 3 different endings. Then reset it and had another go this afternoon, to explore some pathways I hadn't yet taken. Then observed while DH watched it this evening; he found a couple of variations I hadn't yet seen. Have probably spent 5 hours watching it in total, but some of that was rewatching the beginning scenes.

YellowLily · 28/12/2018 21:42

Anyone watched? I don’t seem to be anywhere near a finish and yet keep making ‘wrong’ decisions and keep getting sent back. I’m not sure I’m enjoying it if I’m honest; I’m confused as to what is even going on anymore!

TheFirstOHN · 28/12/2018 21:44

YellowLily what have you done so far and where are you now?

Titsywoo · 28/12/2018 21:49

I'm watching now. Seems pretty good and I've only gone back once near the start. Not sure I've the patience to watch for 5 hours though!

YellowLily · 28/12/2018 21:57

The problem is; I don’t know if what I’m seeing is an ending. Does it show credits or send you back? I’ve not seen credits once so assume I’ve still not been to the end once!

I don’t want to say too much incase of spoilers.

Seen the scene in the flat with Colin and what comes after that.

Seen a strange scene with the psychiatrist several times now following the conversation about Netflix. That had two different outcomes - one where he tried to jump out the window and it turned out he was on a tv show and didn’t recognise his real name? The other he attacked both her and his dad.

Latest he seemed to walk through a mirror and go off somewhere with his mum as a child.

Are any of these classed as endings? Because I keep getting sent back so I assume not!?

TheFirstOHN · 28/12/2018 22:05

Well done for finding the Netflix ending - you don't get credits after that one, you just get looped back to a previous decision point.

When you get sent back to the point where S asks for a sign, try choosing the upside-down Y symbol instead of the Netflix logo.

Titsywoo · 28/12/2018 22:05

Yellowlily I've got to an end and it does show credits then gives you options and you can go back

YellowLily · 28/12/2018 22:11

That’s helpful to know I was at endings and they don’t always end with credits. I was getting frustrated thinking I was nowhere near the end! (Although just got the ending where he ends in prison 2 hours after starting & that has credits)!

Looking forward to S5!

TheFirstOHN · 28/12/2018 22:17

I think it encourages you to go back and watch alternative pathways until you have seen a certain amount of footage (I don't know if this is measured in minutes of viewing or in number of branches followed). Then after that it "allows" you to reach an ending without having to loop back.

TulipsInbloom1 · 28/12/2018 22:21

I am so bloody confused! Picked both of them to go over the ledge. Picked destroy tv and tea. Picked both methods of body disposal. Picked Netflix.

Dh is loving it. I just want to go to bed.

TulipsInbloom1 · 28/12/2018 22:23

And now a fight scene. Am baffled. I wish id mapped this out with a pen and paper as i watched.

Titsywoo · 28/12/2018 22:32

I've got to the end!

Rollergirl11 · 28/12/2018 22:33

I think we got to the end? Did he find the rabbit and everything after that?

YellowLily · 28/12/2018 22:34

I’m with you Tulips. I’m the biggest black mirror fan and expected to love this. I felt there were just too many options and it sent me back too much. I got so so confused - like you said just baffled! I felt nothing but relief when I saw credits if I’m honest. ShockBlush problem is DP is out atm and will probably also want to watch. I said it didn’t matter if we watch separately due to the choosing different endings, and I probably wouldn’t mind watching twice but now Hmm

NoIAmSpartacus · 28/12/2018 22:39

@TheFirstOHN I got the Netflix ending, chose for her to destroy her computer then got credits! After 3 hours of watching!

TulipsInbloom1 · 28/12/2018 22:42

Got the rabbit and him dead in a chair.

TulipsInbloom1 · 28/12/2018 22:46

map of outcomes for any who want.

SPOILERS obvs so only click the link if you want to.

pickleface · 28/12/2018 22:50

All your endings were better than mine which was a film crew Dad and all, but he had forgotten his part in it all...
