Surprised there's no thread on this. Did anyone watch it last night or has the series reached its natural end and is no longer attracting viewers?

OP posts:
gunnergirl · 26/12/2018 11:57

I watched it ,I'm a massive fan but wasn't to impressed with last night's,I'm hoping the new series is better

Knicknackpaddyflak · 26/12/2018 12:08

I watched it. It was a bit blah really. Miriam Margolees was doing her best with the plot and Jenny Agutter was valiant as ever but Nonatus house is running out of nuns, and the whole thing felt a bit limp and sad.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 26/12/2018 12:46

I watched it last night. Nice and easy comfort viewing as ever.

Something silly that bugged me was the beach scenes. The close ups were on a pebble beach and yet the scene when the beach was in the background clearly showed a white sandy beach and sand dunes. I wonder where
It was filmed.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/12/2018 13:01

I watched it, I thought Fred and Violet would adopt one of the Orphans.
It was nice, easy Christmas Day viewing.
Miss Barbara though and Trixie is as annoying as ever.
Loved the new Mum who had her baby in the street, what a character.

clowdyweewee · 26/12/2018 13:01

I had a good cry at the end, as usual.

AnnaMariaDreams · 26/12/2018 13:01

Really enjoyed it except why so much Dr Turner - he’s so annoying!

clowdyweewee · 26/12/2018 13:11

That's an easy one- his wife writes the scripts!!

newcupcake · 26/12/2018 13:15

I was really disappointed with it. At a big fab, but felt it really lacked substance.

IfNotNowBernard · 26/12/2018 13:16

I looked for a thread last night but no!
I thought it was a bit odd and bitty. Like, I was expecting some big story to emerge but it didn't really. Why we're the brother and sister sent to seperate places by the nuns? That wasn't really explained.
And I REALLY don't think ol Trixie, with her "couture" would still be living in a nunnery in the 1960s!
Also I thought the costumes were too coordinated and done-up. I miss the grumpy cockney sister and also Nurse Patsy.

NotANotMan · 26/12/2018 13:18

Trixie is such a dull cariacature.

RedForShort · 26/12/2018 13:25

I enjoyed. Only watched it this morning.

I had a similar thought maddiemookins16mum about Fred and Violet, though had a slight panic something had happened to Fred's nephew and that was why he looked mournful. Was glad to see the young man later on!

Did feel Miriam M's character was a bit too similar to Sister Whatsit (the older nun).

Fed up of Dr Tedious. I don't think I'd even mind his wife, but he's tiresome.

RedForShort · 26/12/2018 13:29

I like Trixie. Like just about all the characters. Even like the nun that will now stay in the mother house. Only character I dislike is the doctor.

Hopefully they get a new writer!

ChesterGreySideboard · 26/12/2018 13:31

Was I the only one thinking of this character?

ChesterGreySideboard · 26/12/2018 13:34

Why we're the brother and sister sent to seperate places by the nuns? That wasn't really explained.

It was because the girl was sent to Australia under a scheme where orphaned British children were adopted by Australian families. The idea being that they were being given a lovely new life away from the slums but in reality they were just used as slave labour, abused and married off. They wouldn’t have sent the brother as he had a disability and was therefore no use on a farm.

ChesterGreySideboard · 26/12/2018 13:37

You can read a little more about it here. www.theguardian.com/society/2017/feb/27/britains-child-migrant-programme-why-130000-children-were-shipped-abroad

I nearly turned it off once I saw Miriam Margolyes was in it, I can't stand her, but I watched it anyway, it was ok, I like Lucille but Val gets on my nerves a bit.

I wonder will the new doctors receptionist stay now that the Turners have adopted another child

gamerchick · 26/12/2018 13:40

It was a bit wooden and they didn't seem comfortable. I hope they warm up a bit for the series. Still enjoyed it though.

yesmelord · 26/12/2018 13:44

I live call the midwife but it didn't seam like a Christmas special, it was more like a preview for what the new series will be like.

It was nice to watch all the same though!

yesmelord · 26/12/2018 14:00

Love*

BooHasAPressieForYou · 26/12/2018 14:10

It was a bit stretched.
I think it's run it's course sadly, it should've stopped a while ago

I did also think of Blackadder and Nursey, that's about the only character MM can play.
And yes I though Violet and Fred would adopt the little down syndrome girl.

jessstan2 · 26/12/2018 14:17

I loved it.

The Mother house is in Sussex, near Chichester. There are beaches with sand dunes and pebbles in that region.

I'd love Sister Mary Cynthia to make a comeback, her breakdown was so, so harrowing.

Communities of nuns did start to dwindle in the 1960s so that is quite realistic but the new Superior did say she would send Nonnatus two new nuns.

It was obvious that gorgeous little May would go home with the Turners, I have a feeling they won't want to part with her either.

It was a very nice, Christmassy episode. We'll be back to grit and grime soon enough in the new series. I've been watching re-runs, can't get enough of them.

MaidenMotherCrone · 26/12/2018 14:18

Miriam Margoyles didn’t play Nursey in Blackadder. She played Lady Whiteadder.

I love Miriam Margoyles. I watched last night just to see her.

The GP is a pain in the arse.
As is his wife.
And Timothy too.

I enjoyed the programme though. No deaths which makes a nice change.

Jog22 · 26/12/2018 14:26

I thought Adele did well in her role.

Starlight90 · 26/12/2018 16:29

I fell asleep. It was boring and Miriam Margoyles was annoying. I loathe her.
