Started to watch but didn't make it to the end. Not sure I will catch up either.

Not sure what it was, the script maybe - found it a bit boring. Maybe I expected too much

I really liked it, but wished they had played the whole Bolero routine at the end.

cafesociety · 26/12/2018 10:31

I enjoyed it but don't think it was the best production. The opening/title images were disappointing, and once again, all the way through the diction was not clear and I missed parts of what was being said.

It plodded on without much excitement or passion but I saw all of it and on the whole a good story and decent tv.

Llongyfarchiadau · 26/12/2018 10:43

On paper, I'm sure that the story itself was interesting. However, it was very dry to watch. I did make it to the end.

RandomMess · 26/12/2018 10:45

Gutted we didn't get the whole of Bolero at he end!!!

ScreamingBadSanta · 26/12/2018 10:48

I quite enjoyed it, but I think the script was rather padded out which made it dull in places. The skating scenes were very well done and I thought the quality of acting was good.

In the sets, some of the 'period detail' from the 70s and 80s was very off; as if they'd just used any old thing and hoped no one would notice!

RandomMess · 26/12/2018 10:51

I think the decor etc more revealed the family's financial status that they couldn't afford to stay up with the latest plus house decor in the North is generally not the same as in the South East.

Or it could have just been tiny budget!!!

topcat2014 · 26/12/2018 11:29

We enjoyed it - interesting to see the backgrounds of both T&D - not exactly silver spoon :)

Firstbornunicorn · 26/12/2018 11:33

I missed this, and it was filmed at my rink!
Does anyone know if it will be repeated?

DeepanKrispanEven · 26/12/2018 12:31

You'll be able to catch up on ITV Player.

ThatPeskyElf · 26/12/2018 12:32

We loved it!
Daughter wants to go ice skating today!

Argonauts · 26/12/2018 12:39

I thought the two leads were brilliant, but let down by a wooden script, and the fact that there was a fair amount of fancy camerawork and edits to conceal the fact that the actors weren’t doing any of the real skating. Which is understandable, obviously, but if you’re filming a biopic about people who do something superlatively well, especially something emotional and physical and beautiful like skating, the whole reason we’re involved as an audience is for the emotional hit of the actual performances. So if you can’t really show them because those aren’t your lead actors, it falls a bit flat, I think.

I spent more time thinking how good-looking the actor who played Dean was, and wondering whether the athletes at the Sarajevo Olympics really had to sleep in little glass-doomed cubicles.

Argonauts · 26/12/2018 12:40

Glass-DOORED.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 26/12/2018 12:48

We loved it. Perfect for Christmas day. Just goes to show what hard work and dedication can achieve, even if it wasn't quite the real story.

There's a documentary about the day they won at the Sarajevo Olympics. I think it's BBC2 tonight.

ScreamingBadSanta · 26/12/2018 12:50

@RandomMess I was thinking of the things that looked too modern for the period! The breakfast cereal in the opening shot, for instance; the wallpaper in Jayne's bedroom (it's one that we had new at home, in the 1990s); the garden furniture outside Chris's mum's flat. All out of period.

Crimbobimbo · 26/12/2018 13:02

Their accents were the usual 'let's do a generic northern rather than the actual East Midlands one they would have had' which seems to happen in telly all the time. See 'My Mad Fat Diary' also. I liked it; it was cheesy and pleasant.

RandomMess · 26/12/2018 13:04

GrinGrin

What I recognised was right for the period, I clearly didn't recognise the same things as you.

Moonstoned · 26/12/2018 13:05

Lucy Mangan’s review in the Grauniad, which is quite funny, refers to both T and D as ‘Northern’. I can’t decide whether she genuinely doesn’t know where Nottinghamshire is, or whether she’s parodying broadsheet London-centricness, where ‘the North’ starts at Cockfosters.

MrsChollySawcutt · 26/12/2018 13:16

We liked it but I do wish they had actually spent more time on their progression through the sport and shown more actual footage of the routines such as Mack and Mabel, Barnum etc.

AnyFucker · 26/12/2018 13:20

Cheap and nasty production.

Rafflesway · 26/12/2018 16:15

Sorry, I only saw the last hour and thought the whole thing was dire!

TBF, I find all this fawning over T & D 34 years after winning the Olympics is getting like how we constantly harp on about 1966 and England winning the World Cup. 🙄 Yes, great achievement at the time but ice dancing has moved on massively since 1984!

Aridane · 26/12/2018 16:39

It was slow going - stayed till the bitter end and theand didn’t even show Bolero in full

GymNGin · 26/12/2018 20:03

I watched it. Can't comment on the decor/fashions as I was born in 84.

I enjoyed it because it was easy to watch. I didn't feel that it was 'true' though. I think Torvill and Dean are quite private about their personal lives and think the story was made up! I do think they should've shown the whole bolero at the end.

RandomMess · 26/12/2018 20:09

It did say at the start it was a fictionalised account in case anyone missed that bit.

I silent half an hour watching T&D on you tube Smile

DeepanKrispanEven · 26/12/2018 20:11

Yes, great achievement at the time but ice dancing has moved on massively since 1984!

Yet no-one else has ever managed to get a perfect all 6.0 score.

Hulloa · 26/12/2018 20:11

It was shockingly bad. Full of clichés. Brutish men, tough plucky women, workingclassrus dialogue, barfable supposed pivotal moments and they didn't even show the Bolero. I hope Torville and Dean sue them for making such an appalling pile of shite with their names on.
