Mad men is it worth pursuing?

I'm on episode 7 and although it's watchable it's not gripping me and everyone says how amazing it is.
I don't like hardly any of the characters and I'm wondering does it improve or is it just not for me?

I did enjoy it... it wasn’t the best though and sometimes I wonder, maybe I watched it just because of Jon Hamm Hmm

ButtermilkBiscuits · 07/09/2018 19:10

Stick with it because it does get better. Once I got hooked, I binged and watched all of the series in a week Blush (I was on mat leave with a newborn)

Sarahandduck18 · 07/09/2018 19:10

It’s more the atmosphere than the plot.

It can be slow in places.

Stick with it, it is worth it.

Pamdoo · 07/09/2018 19:11

Although I enjoyed the first series, I stuck with it and watched all the rest and to be honest it was a bit of a chore! I just found it a bit boring and felt like not much happened. Loved it for the sets and outfits though!

NoLogicInThis · 07/09/2018 19:11

Do any the characters become likeable as I don't really like any of them?

I would say it you don't like it by now you probably never will. I liked the first series but then went off it and stopped watching.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 07/09/2018 19:19

Loved it! Elizabeth Moss is fantastic. Her character improves season by season. I loved her!

AveABanana · 07/09/2018 19:27

I was unimpressed by about ep3-4 but hooked by the end of the first series.

There are some subplots and characters that seem utterly pointless in the scheme of things, like Betty Draper and the kids and anything to do with her unless in relation to Don.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 07/09/2018 19:31

Yes yes yes

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 07/09/2018 19:37

Yes watch it it's brilliant, I agree some episodes are slow. It's worth watching for Joan, she's a ball breaker Grin

PawneeParksDept · 07/09/2018 19:40

I think if you aren't in already you might never be, but go as far as the episode called The Carousel and if it still isn't for you then it won't ever be.

The attitudes modernise and the characters develop over the years.

PattiStanger · 07/09/2018 19:46

It's not for everyone, I loved it but I don't think you are meant to like all of the characters, if you watch all the seasons it's interesting to see how attitudes changed and just how far things have come since the 1950s

AnyFucker · 07/09/2018 19:47

If you don't like Mad Men...you don't like life Smile

PattiStanger · 07/09/2018 19:48

Cross posts Pawnee, interesting that we both made the same comment.

Slightly off topic, I just don't get Parks and Recreation, I've tried a couple of times but found it slightly annoying

Abitlost2015 · 07/09/2018 19:57

The characters in the series are not made to be liked. I think if you don’t enjoy it by now it’s probably not for you

PawneeParksDept · 07/09/2018 20:30

@PattiStanger

The thing about Parks the first season is only 6 episodes long and doesn't really hit a stride til a dud character leaves in Season 2 and Leslie gets a proper love interest.

They also work out who works best as pairings in scenes and switch things up.

Some annoying characters (I particularly didn't like Tom, Chris or Anne) but well worth watching for

Leslie
Ben
April
Andy
and Ron

And guest appearances from Tammy, Ron's ex

There is a sequence in it involving an ice rink which I could just watch again and again

And most of Ron's lines are gold

In short, yes watch again GrinWink

Itsear · 07/09/2018 22:01

If you’ve watched to episode 7 then watch all of series 1, the last episode of series 1 is spectacular. IMO it never reaches the brilliance of that so I would bow out then.

You must see it through

Mc180768 · 08/09/2018 16:29

I loved Mad Men. I like the fact it is more dialogue than plots and the development of the characters is a joy to watch. It's also very relevant of the era in terms of the environment.

Betty is a character that I particularly enjoyed and the journey her life took through out each season.

I liked it and there has been nothing similar since MM.

Almahart · 08/09/2018 16:32

I loved Madmen. Agree w pp, watch to the end of the series and then decide

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 08/09/2018 16:37

Yes absolutely I think it’s worth pursuing. It took me a while to warm to the characters but I really did over time. Clever, well rounded characters, good socio-political commentary, and I thought the ending was great. But yeah, I also did watch it for Don Draper. Wink

Didiusfalco · 08/09/2018 16:42

I loved it. I found myself wondering about Don Drapers psychology/motivations as if he was a real person. Loved all the period detail too.

Jackiebrambles · 08/09/2018 16:46

When I finished the last episode of the last series I felt desperate wanting to start all over again!

Stick with it, it’s fab. You’ll grow to love Joan and Peggy I’ll bet.

Hoozz · 08/09/2018 16:55

I've just started Mad Men, on episode 8, I thought I was the only person who hadn't seen it and DS recommended it.
I wonder whether it's a series that works best once a week as it would have been shown originally, rather than binge watched. Actually my idea of binge watching is 3 or 4 episodes a week.
I do agree that it's a little slow and not much happens but I love it. The casual racism and sexism is jaw dropping. And the none stop smoking (although it was a bit like that when I first started work in 1975).
Joan reminds me of Donna Paulson in Suits. I adore Betty's dresses
