K-Drama recommendations

A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

  • Something in the Rain
  • Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
  • Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

Yes the Time Mart collapse is key but also I had to keep going back to episode one where he dives off the cliff. The answer as to the missing identity isn’t straightforward!

boatyardblues · 08/10/2018 12:51

Thanks for the oblique clues Betty. I really want to get home & cram those last 3 episodes. It’s maddening. There were lots of missing people after the Time Mart collapse, so potentially different outcomes. I spent a while in bed last night retracing my steps & trying to follow different threads.

I am going to miss Black a lot when I get to the end. Song Seung-Heon is one handsome man. I could watch him reading out the phone book TBH.

As an aside, I need an enforced kdrama break - DH wants to watch something else in the evenings - but I need pointers on something that has the same appeal & breadth of plotting/dialogue/intrigue.

This is why I watched Saimdang but the drippy heroine drove me nuts.

In hindsight there are clues all the way through, like the medicine Joon takes which is a throwaway comment early on, but I warn you the last ten minutes will have you cursing at the scriptwriters for totally different reasons.

I recommend Healer before you take a break. I have just finished I Hear Your Voice on Viki and it was so good I don't want to rush into another drama ifkwim.

DH and I have been watching Mystery Road together which is v good although it is not subtitled obv.

I love Kdramas and also Korean films. I am addicted to them.
Korean films are really good especially the serial killer and horror ones.
With Korean dramas I do enjoy all genres my all time favourite Kdrama is Coffee Prince genre which i watched about 8 years ago and I have watched it about 3 times since then.
At the moment I am enjoying The Guest (The Hand), this is a horror genre one and the first 2 episodes were pretty scary.
Kdramas are my guilty pleasure.

boatyardblues · 08/10/2018 13:57

I am currently obsessed and in need of other interests. Blush

I am also currently obsessed which is a pain as I have so much work and other stuff I need to focus on.

bettys · 08/10/2018 14:46

Hi LostSeoul have you seen The Ghost Detective? Perhaps more light in tone than The Guest which does look very scary from the reviews.

I haven't been able to find Coffee Prince, the original one with the guy from Goblin in anywhere to watch.

LostSeoul · 08/10/2018 15:00

Year I watched one episode of The Ghost Detective but I much prefer The Guest.
I watched Coffee Prince on the Korean drama sites but I do wish that Netflix would have more content like their American site.
One drama I would recommend is The Sound of my Heart on netflixs. It has Lee Kwang Soo in it and it is so funny.

bettys · 08/10/2018 15:25

Ah so Lee Kwang-Soo is the guy from Live & Busted so have stuck it on my list and just noticed Netflix has added a new one called YG Future Strategy Office.

The Ghost Detective gets better as more people become aware of him.

Also like Terius Behind Me for light spy fun.

boatyardblues · 08/10/2018 19:58

If Lee Kwang-Soo is the tall, lanky guy from Live, he’s the kookie housemate in It’s OK, it’s only love which was a bit of an odd kdrama. He is perfectly suited to kook and comedy, mind.

LostSeoul · 08/10/2018 20:20

Yes that’s him. I really enjoyed that drama of his. Lee Kwang Soo is one of the original members of the Korean variety show Running Man. I really enjoy him in dramas I just wish he would do more.

boatyardblues · 09/10/2018 00:19

Right, only one episode of Black left & I’m saving it for tomorrow. I feel I’ll sleep easier tonight knowing what the hit & run was all about.

I'll be interested to know your thoughts on the ending.....

boatyardblues · 09/10/2018 12:36

I am half afraid to watch the last episode now, because I sense crushing disappointment hovering around me like a black shadow. 😆

The street food meal with Joon’s birth mother made me sniffle. So sad.

Ha ha sorry!! Like the black shadow image though!

I blubbed at the street food scene it was so so sad.

SummerRayne17 · 09/10/2018 15:11

Hi All. I have only recently started watching K-Dramas and I have to admit that i have become slightly obsessed! Lol. Every episode leaves me wanting more!

So far i have watched 'Black', 'Blood' and currently on episode 7 of 'Oh my Ghost' and really enjoying it.

I will be following this thread to check for suggestions on what else is good 👍🏼

On a side note, i am amazed by how many on-screen couples are now partners/married in real life. Soooo cute Smile

boatyardblues · 09/10/2018 17:04

Which couples? I am clearly not fangirling diligently enough...

bettys · 09/10/2018 17:06

Ooh goody, join the gang SummerRayne17!

Kdrama is ridiculously addictive.

The lead in Oh My Ghost Jo Jung-Suk has just married Gummy, a very well-known Korean singer (I had to look her up though)

SummerRayne17 · 09/10/2018 18:15

@boatyardblues
The 2 lead characters in 'Blood', Ri-ta and Dr Park are married in RL and I watched a video on YouTube showing 13 other couples that have gone from on-screen romance to RL! They all look so good together and beautiful babies too 💕

boatyardblues · 09/10/2018 19:58

I will have to do some google snooping.

I just finished Black. Those last 10 minutes? What. Da. Fuck!?! Wrong on so many different levels, I don’t know what to say. The worst thing was to complete change of vibe and the fakery. Angry

Glad tidings! Seung-Hun Soon is back on the dating market

OP posts:
bettys · 09/10/2018 20:49

Yay!!! He is so delicious (disclaimer: I am a middle-aged mum and ds has just gone to university so I really shouldn't be a kdrama addict)

bettys · 09/10/2018 20:51

(or fangerling over younger men

bettys · 09/10/2018 20:53

sp fangirling autocorrect keeps bringing it up as fingerling which is weird and a little disturbing

bettys · 09/10/2018 21:05

boatyardblues the last 10 minutes of Black are a travesty! I Confusedread that they extended the original run by 2 episodes and presumably didn't know how to end it as it was a bigger hit than they thought it would be.

The make-up was just so bad Confused
