A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

  • Something in the Rain
  • Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
  • Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

Bea welcome to the wonderful world of kdrama, just immerse yourself in it and be bathed by its bonkersness!

I'm a grown woman ffs! Blush I know I know so many swoon worthy men/boys/beautiful creatures!

I want some of those long spoons, and big pots!

There are a few series that have more than season, eg Let's Eat but I think part of the charm is that it is all wrapped up in one go, although with a really good drama you are often left wanting more.

I'm the worst at keeping up with this thread! But I took some pics of pots and spoons I have to share after the talk of utensils and bowls etc!

1st pic is korean spoon vs uk one.
2nd is onggi, its basically an earthenware pot shaped in a certain way that you use for storing and fermenting food in.
3rd is ttukbaegi you cook in it and eat out of it
4th( next post) its a box that you use when you make tofu, to press all the liquid out and make it into a square.
5th - dolsot, basically just a bowl made of stone! it looks wet in part as thats the seasoning and the dry bits are where I've been lazy and not seasoned the whole thing.

I love your culinary update Seadays - am most intrigued by the tofu press.

Tomorrow’s Cantabile is proving to be a thoroughly enjoyable diversion. There’s a very petite double bass player in it called Min Hee who they all call Mini Min Hee (sound like Mini Mini), so I’m enjoying the puns. The main female lead kept calling her friend ‘orabang’ - I had to google and it’s Jeju dialect, similar in meaning to ‘opah’ (sp?). Turns out the Jeju dialect is considered to be ‘at risk’ so it’s cool to hear new dialect words. Jeju dialect wiki entry

Making tofu is surprisingly easy, this is a pretty good write up www.thespruceeats.com/how-to-make-tofu-1001574
It has another wooden lid you put on top to weight it down and the excess water drains out thr bottom holes! Then you just put the finished product in a container with water in the fridge

I forgot to say Mini Min Hee was the small but fierce housemate in Reply 1994. She’s a cracking actress - very watchable.

I have spoon envy!

Thanks to HeechulOppa I am enjoying She Was Pretty although I spend a fair amount of time shouting 'Just tell him who you are FFS!'

I may now have to work through Park Seo Joon's back catalogue on Imdb.

Just had to pause to see kids off to bed. Nearly finished Tomorrow’s Cantabile. What next? It would be good to have a leading lady who knows her worth & holds her own. The super-gifted, clueless, unassuming ones are doing my nut.

Found this amusing on reddit. My favourite is the white truck of death.

The 2nd male lead definition:

  • Hot AF
  • Female lead is blind AF so doesn’t notice
  • Viewers like him more than the male lead

I paraphrase, but that was the general gist.

Dong Mae. I rest my case. 🤷‍♂️

QED boatyardblues

Which leads naturally to Dr Romantic as your next possible drama with Dong-Mae in surgeon's scrubs. The female lead starts off full of bottle at least....

boatyardblues · 10/11/2018 22:09

Betty - You can always be relied upon for the shamelessly shallow recommendations. Wink

My word! Dr Romantic is so forward... It’s like this one jumped straight in at episode 12.

It’s the Dong-Mae effect

boatyardblues · 11/11/2018 00:25

I posted before the car got t-boned by the lorry. Twisty... Now he’s sleeping on a bench in the waiting room of the hospital from The Shining.

The Yoo Yeon-Seok shirt-off quota in Dr Romantic is very favourable, Betty. 👌

See, white truck of doom strikes again

boatyardblues · 11/11/2018 01:00

Aye. Weird Ninja Doctor is also currently more likeable than lead male.

The number of times these surgeons have been spattered with arterial spray in the operating theatre & it’s run down into their eyes is astonishing. Aside from the infection control aspect, surely it would make hard to continue with the surgery if you are blinded by blood? This show is making me wibble about infection risk as much as Don’t Sare to Dream’s breast clinic’s loose grasp of patient confidentiality and ward mixing did...

Episode 5 and another white truck of doom! They are everywhere!!!

Honestly if I ever get to South Korea I am going to be most worried about the white truck of doom!
