Two escaped handmaids (the first?) telling their story could they rally the world enough for them to step in and stop Gilead?

Moira & the handmaid they share a house with both escaped first, & that wasn't enough. But the letters getting out do seem to have changed the climate. Maybe Emily telling her & June's stories will tip things over.

I'd have thought that if Emily arrives & mentions June, they'd immediately contact Moira & Luke. Moira might even be the one to receive her.

ittooshallpass · 14/08/2018 12:40

I liked the fact we hadn't been shown what the Martha's were planning. It gave us a real insight into how June and the other Handmaids must be feeling. Cut off. Isolated. Without hope. No idea what's going on.

June's face during her escape showed a realisation that there was/ is hope. All those Martha's (and who knows how many others) had come together for a common good.

Divide and conquer is the usual approach by Gilead. They thought so little of the Martha's they didn't bother to watch them.

June's face at the very end said it all. Her expression shouted: Big Mistake Motherfuckers.

I can't wait for S3!

theredjellybean · 14/08/2018 12:43

Lots of handmaids escaped and the American embassy in Canada knew about the bombing of the red centre and who was killed. They know full well what is happening.
But a baby getting smuggled out..and her mother staying to rescue her other child That might cause more national interest.

SisterNotCisTerf · 14/08/2018 12:45

I wonder if any handmaids escaped in the aftermath of the bomb. Quite a few of them ran to avoid the explosion and I imagine the guards would have been a bit distracted trying to rescue commanders etc. I like to think some handmaids managed to slip away during the chaos.

CoolCarrie · 14/08/2018 13:05

Amazon have series 1 buttonmoon.

BlessedBeTheFruitLoop · 14/08/2018 13:05

Series 1 is free on Now Tv Entertainment just now (they do a free trial). I bought s2 on Amazon Prime, it's £1.89 an episode or you can buy the box set. I'd planned to just watch until I caught up with the free episodes on all 4 but the episodes disappear off after a certain amount of time. And I got sick of the advert breaks after being used to watching it without. So I ended up buying the whole thing on Amazon.

Lumpy76 · 14/08/2018 13:09

@SisiterNotCisTerf - I’ve missed something somewhere...why might Emily be terminally ill?

buttonmoonb4tea · 14/08/2018 13:10

Blessedbethefruitloops thank you

BlessedBeTheFruitLoop · 14/08/2018 13:15

From her time in the colonies shovelling the toxic waste (she'd started losing her teeth etc).

With regards to the ending - I'd already read the spoilers before starting to watch so it wasn't a surprise to me that June stayed. Lots of things leading up to it like her telling Serena "I can get HER out", not us. So I think her mind was made up before seeing Emily.

I really wish Nick had killed the guardian who brought Hannah to the house. They could have tied the Martha up and taken Hannah with them. Assuming of course the Martha wasn't part of the underground network anyway. I do think Fred set it up so Nick would get arrested though and leave June alone. Maybe so he could play the knight in shining armour in some twisted way when they went to find her.

I did feel a bit short changed with the nursery scene. Really wish we'd seen more of Nick and Holly together.

SisterNotCisTerf · 14/08/2018 13:17

Sorry lumpy, I should have explained that. Yes as blessed says, Emily was already showing signs of being ill while she was still in the colonies so it possible she is ill. She certainly doesn’t look as well as she did before she went there but I suppose hard labour would do that to you too.

I'm getting a bit obsessed with my Moses links now... Emily has a bit of Moses in her story too - she's fleeing "Egypt" after murdering an "Egyptian" for being abusive towards the "Israelites".

Really wish we'd seen more of Nick and Holly together.

So does Nick...!

Lumpy76 · 14/08/2018 14:29

Thanks! Yes of course...Emily was near all the toxic waste! Who thinks June is gong to get Hannah? I’m not so sure...something makes me think she hasn’t finished with Fred yet and Serena let her get Nicole out - are they going to develop that friendship?

ParisProperty · 14/08/2018 14:36

I know someone from Cambodia who survived because he was hidden for hours in the dirty laundry.
His father and brothers were shot by the Khmer Rouge.
He doesn't remember but is glad to be alive.

Mustang27 · 14/08/2018 14:40

Jesus Paris that's awful!! I think that's why it's so gripping there are so many ways that it could/is happening in our world right now.

Mustang27 · 14/08/2018 14:42

You are right now I think on it Emily is broken and glad she is hopefully getting out.

What is Fred going to do to Nick?

EmpressOfSpartacus · 14/08/2018 14:56

What is Fred going to do to Nick?

I think Fred's likely to be more worried about his own skin.

SisterNotCisTerf · 14/08/2018 15:02

Yes I think Fred will be facing a tribunal or whatever to explain how’s he let a baby be stolen. He will lose his big office and whatever else came with it. His wife is already of questionable character.

I think june will have a challenge ahead of her before she even gets to Hannah. Suspect the whole next series will be the run up to her getting to Hannah.

Nick has plausible deniability. He never explicitly threatened Fred, he could say he was trying to protect him. He was placed in his role to spy on Fred and has a lot of dirt on him, so I don't think Fred would be able to do much to him. To him Nick is just a loyal driver/dogsbody, he doesn't know he's actually an eye sent by a more powerful (although now deceased) commander to help keep him in line. Look at the fact he knows Nick was the baby's father and did nothing. Sending him to a house in the middle of nowhere with the mother of his child was a power play and a test to see where his loyalties lie. And getting him arrested would demonstrate to June that Nick can't protect her, only for him to sweep in later to rescue her. Only she wasn't sitting waiting to be rescued, she was hiding in the attic with a gun pointing at him. Later it seems he genuinely couldn't understand why she would rather hide from him than come 'home' to safety with him. Which is why I think he'd set the whole thing up.

I think after seeing Hannah again there was no way June could leave her. Especially when she asked June why she never tried harder, and clearly remembers being taken away from her (talking about June getting hit on the head etc). The fact she told Serena that the baby can't grow up in Gillead means she knows Hannah can't either. She promised to get the baby out, which she has. And now it's Hannah's turn. From her time in the house alone she'll know which family Hannah is placed with now (and that's also the place they spent their summers presumably), and she knows there's a support network now. So I think she's going to work from the inside to bring it all down. The romantic in me hopes she'll do it with Nick at her side but I suspect he'll go back into his driver role to keep up the spying. I loved the scenes when Nick and June would talk about the baby and imagine their life together. I wish there'd been a few more minutes of that and a bit less collecting washing/hiding in the grass in the last episode. But that's just because I love him and he makes my ovaries ache Grin

I think one of the reasons I love the Nick/June relationship is because it's nice to see this hunky, caring, sensitive man (who is also a badass with a gun when required) fall in love with a normal, average-looking woman despite her wearing no makeup, sporting dumpy clothes, having her nails a chewed up mess and not being able to shave her legs. She's as blotchy and haggard looking as the rest of us mere mortals yet he still wants her. And they've given her a mummy tummy too after the birth instead of her pinging back to a size 0 in the space of five minutes. So refreshing.

Flaskfan · 14/08/2018 15:11

Wonder if June is the 'traitor' Fred is harbouring? His comeuppance could be the start of series 3. If Al has been assaulted/killed by a hm and a hm+ baby have escaped, the wives are agitating and young girls are thinking with their hormones, the men of Gilead must be getting v twitchy and ripe for a purge to regain purity again. Book assumes Nick is the traitor, but there's no evidence. Unless Serena was spotted handing the baby over and she's seen as the traitor.

SisterNotCisTerf · 14/08/2018 15:18

Fred is harbouring a traitor?

OP posts:
legolimb · 14/08/2018 15:33

What will happen to Nick?

It was clear that he knew something was going on when he put his hand on Fred and told him he should stay indoors. (and flashed his gun).

Fred must know that even if NIck had no part in June's escape with baby Holly that he was at that point assisting.

I don't know if I can wait for the next season!

BlessedBeTheFruitLoop · 14/08/2018 15:37

I think S3 will definitely show the unravelling of Fred. He's surrounded by people he knows he can't trust any more, yet has no actual proof that they are traitors. And as the 'man of the house' he'll be held accountable for all the problems in the house. Dead and missing handmaids, lost babies, a rebellious wife, a heretic under his roof. I think towards the end of the series, it was clear that Fred is actually a pretty weak and pathetic man underneath the bravado. He knows June is a strong woman and enjoys it when she fights back. He wants to have her under his control, knows she's not scared of him and thinks her children are the key to her compliance. He probably doesn't consider himself as being an evil man. He wants power and likes the sex. He tried to connect with June through their meetings in his office, wanted June to 'kiss him like she meant it', took her to the hotel so she can 'enjoy it for once', arranged for her to see Moria. Arranging the meeting with Hannah and asking if she was grateful for it, bringing her home to feed the baby instead leaving her at the RC, making her an offer to stay long term so she can see her children. In his twisted way he considers these things as kindness towards her, gifts for her. When they looked for June at the house and didn't find her, he blamed Serena for making her life miserable, as though he was blameless himself. Like any good narcissist. In contrast, Serena was repeatedly and deliberately cruel to June throughout, at times seeming to enjoy it but at other times realising she was being a monster. She definitely had a few cracks in her facade by the end.

Lumpy76 · 14/08/2018 15:44

Was just thinking of Nick...god yes! Yes I would! 🤣
