Let’s get June out of there!

Also, isn’t Emily CLs fourth handmaid? Is he getting them out one at a time?

That would take some explaining to AL when she comes to check on her handmaids and he’s “lost” another one! Grin

I thought Serena called the baby Nicole because it had been fathered by Nick? A snarky reminder to Fred that the baby wasn't his

@placemats I don't quite know how to take your comments. I used the Angry (i.e. angry) emoticon because I was angry that Digital Spy had used a spoiler. I didn't go over to Digital Spy for a spoiler!

To lose one handmaid, Commander Lawrence, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose four looks like carelessness.

Topsyshair · 13/08/2018 14:52

I felt my first bit of sympathy for Serena when she lost her finger, but then I remembered when she'd tried to hide Janine away when the Mexicans visited, it wasn't like Serena hasn't know what was happening to other women.

One thing I've struggled with in The Handmaids tale is how so many ordinary people have gone along with the regime. Watching the fire engines I was wondering if they were just regular firemen before Gilead.

It's clear that Fred and the other commanders have complete contempt for women, but then I thought about the lunch comment when Serena walked in, how many men do we know who would crack a joke like that? How many men do we know who's probably be quite happy at the idea of having an obedient woman at his disposal?

The same question was asked about the Nazi regime in Germany and why so many Jewish people went to their death in the Camps.

I have apologised BIWI to you in another post.

Your first post wasn't as clear to other posters as you like to think it was, including me.

@ciderhouserules I thought Emily was going to kill herself at the ceremony. As the music rose the tension did. I thought her having a caring moment with June by the wall earlier was her way of saying goodbye to her.

There is an interesting article here about ordinary people caught up in the horror.

Would be great to see Nick and June working together - I was really sorry to think of her leaving Nick. I don't think I really like Luke, not sure i've seen much of his personality.

SusanWalker yes I was worried about Eden's sister, particularly when Fred asked about her.

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 13/08/2018 15:38

This might sound daft but C.Lawrence at the end saying goodbye to June and Emily reminded me of the witch and the end of Roald Dhals The Witches (movie) returning the two little mice home, the look of delight at setting them free and then heading off in the car Grin

I thought she was going to kill CLawrence in the knowledge that she'd then face judicial murder herself.

Was the music actually playing in the room, or was it background music? I thought when it started that it was in the room but then wasn't so sure.

Google maps tells me that Boston-Stanstead just across the Canadian border should take three-and-a-half to four hours depending on conditions. So not a journey of days and days, even if they do have to take circuitous routes to avoid checkpoints. Just thinking about feeding and changing Holly/Nichole.

When Fred looked at the map I wondered whether Gilead had lost some territory, but it wasn't close up enough for me to see. Anyone else?

placemats · 13/08/2018 15:41

I thought Handmaids were those who transgressed in the 'former life'. Emily, a lesbian, so her rapes were 'corrective'.
June, an adulteress, so her rapes were 'corrective'.

Eden's sister doesn't fall into this category. But of course rules might change.

SisterNotCisTerf · 13/08/2018 15:45

I loved the tiny nod Nick gave June through the front door before she escaped. He was telling her he wanted her to go with his child, leaving him behind.

Bit worried about Rita. Waterford could tell she knew something was up just before he ran up to the baby’s cot. June gone, he only had Rita to take his anger out on. (If serena pleads ignorance)

@noblegiraffe Your comment about the meaning of Nichole piqued my interest so I’ve had a quick Google to see what I could find and it apparently means ‘People’s Victory’ or ‘victory of the people’. And it’s derived from Nicholas who is patron saint of children.

Nothing in this show is accidental as we know and now my mind is in overdrive thinking of the reason for Serena to have picked that name!

Ginger1982 · 13/08/2018 16:00

I thought Fred had called the baby Nicole to get back at June as he knew it wasn't his?

I kept waiting for CLawrence to shout, 'Donna!'

I was hoping June would tell Serena to come with her.

Clawdy · 13/08/2018 16:09

Interesting that all the theories on here about baby Angela being abused by her "mother" were wrong. Like Serena, she was keen for a better future for the baby, who looked as healthy as could be!

ciderhouserules · 13/08/2018 16:41

Eden's sister doesn't fall into this category. - there is more than one Regime in the world where the sins of one family member visits retribution on all of them. For generations. It helps keep everyone in line Sad Angry

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 13/08/2018 16:58

I'm watching The Social Network Max Minghella is in it 😍

It's on Netflix for the Max fans, who haven't seen it or have but didn't previously realise he was in it.

IcedPurple · 13/08/2018 17:00

Can someone remind me if Emily's son is in Canada?

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 13/08/2018 17:02

Yes. He's in Canada.

Emily's wife was able to take their son and go even though he was Emily's biological child because she was a Canadian citizen making their son a Canadian citizen also.

NotABeliever · 13/08/2018 17:06

Hi all Smile
Been following this thread eagerly. There's one thing I haven't quite figured out and would appreciate your help. What did Serena ask he commanders to change exactly? Why was it so outrageous?
Thanks!

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 13/08/2018 17:07

She asked them to allow girls to read the Bible

NotABeliever · 13/08/2018 17:11

I feel a bit thick.. why aren't they allowed to read the Bible? Isn't the regime based on religion?

IcedPurple · 13/08/2018 17:12

Thanks for that. Didn't realise Emily's wife was Canadian.

So it seems next series will be focussed on the resistance both in Canada and within Gilead itself, with June involved in the latter. I really don't think there's any way she can end up back with the Waterfords again, though you never know with these scriptwriters!
