Placemarking to read later.

Do we know when it’s anticipated season 3 will be shown?

WhyDoesItAlways · 13/08/2018 10:06

Margo, what about the Arab Spring? That really gathered momentum across North Africa and regimes were toppled. All fairly recently.

SisterNotCisTerf · 13/08/2018 10:21

I watch with subtitles, it’s was “stay away from drugs”. Although I could equally imagine him saying God too!

I don't understand June's sympathy for Serena. The woman who was instrumental in setting up Gilead, who made her life a living hell, stole her baby, tortured her re Hannah in the first series and then planned and helped Fred to rape June. Why would any woman get over that and go back to save her?

GileadWivesAreFashionIcons · 13/08/2018 10:38

So, with regards to Nick, I actually think he’ll be ok. After all he didn’t really DO anything as such, he just told Waterford that they’d be safer inside and whilst he touched the gun he didn’t actually threaten him. I can’t see Waterford telling anyone he was too scared of Nick touching a gun to leave the room, he’s already lost enough face and credibility.

*Disclaimer - I am HOPELESSLY in love with Max Minghella and absolutely desperate for him to be in this forever.

SisterNotCisTerf · 13/08/2018 10:42

Me too gileadwives! I love him. He can’t go. Not yet. But I don’t think Fred will let this go unpunished.

I love that June has stayed. I am hoping she will not return to the house but become a Harriet Tubman figure and run an Underground Railroad while she searches for Hannah.
I also saw the Moses reference and started to realise she would let Holly go and stay for Hannah - but I was urging her to get in the car.

mrsoutnumbered · 13/08/2018 10:46

I've been wondering though - does everyone spend much time lying on a bed singing softly to their DC and tweaking their noses in dappled light? I feel I should make more of an effort in case something bad and huge happens politically and we get separated for a few years...

Yes I wondered if perhaps she would have a flashback to her child driving her mad and her shouting "get to bed and stop messing around!" 😂😂

SisterNotCisTerf · 13/08/2018 10:53

I didn’t spot any of these Moses references or have a clue which version of the bible was being recited. I clearly didn’t pay attention in bible studies! Grin

I remember a friend telling me she found her mum lying on the floor almost whispering a lullaby to her sleeping niece who she was looking after. Friend said “Mum what on Earth are you doing on the floor?” And her Mum said she never took the time to do it when her own children were small so she was making the effort to do it with her niece before it was too late. It always stayed with me and although mine drive me batty most of the time, I did sometimes try and just lie with them and enjoy them just being so small and innocent.

I think she'd be insane to return to the house. The "taken against her will" and "gave birth while out for a drive" stories barely held water as it was, and everyone knew it. If she turned up there without Nicole she'd be interrogated and end up on the wall.

Plus Serena's sacrifice was for Nicole. Not June. I still don't think June can really trust her.

ciderhouserules · 13/08/2018 11:06

I actually gasped out loud when Emily stabbed Aunt Lydia! I din't see that coming at all, but when AL was lying at the bottom of the stairs I wanted Emily to stab her a few more times, just to make sure!

I thought when Serena handed the baby over, that she'd want to come too.

And like others, I wondered how they would keep baby Holly/Nicole quiet for hours. Unless she did pack bottles for her. Sometimes TV babies are totally unlike real life ones - my ds3 fed every 1.5 hours. I wouldn't get far without him screaming and bringing the police down on us!

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 13/08/2018 11:08

To the person who asked about surgeries. I feel like something like Serena's finger would have been done quickly but without anaesthesia, whereas Emily's FGM because it was internal was done fully surgically, they wouldn't have risked infection considering the area.

noblegiraffe · 13/08/2018 11:10

Fred putting Serena to bed and making her tea. Willing Serena to say ‘oh do fuck off Fred’.

theredjellybean · 13/08/2018 11:15

I thought they might have explored the push pull that June would have been feeling as she knows that hannah is at the moment safe, in a loving home with parents who seem to genuinely care about her. Remember the picture and toys and books in the country house and the pink bike in the garage.
She is sending a defensively baby out into god know what, while hannah is safe for a few years.
I'd have been desperately torn.
Out of gilead but with all her new knowledge of Martha network, nick, cl, and knowing there is now discontent with the wives, I'd have thought campaigning from safety of Canada would have been better idea.
I don't think she is going back for hannah.. I think she now wants a greater result, she wants an end of gilead for all women.

theredjellybean · 13/08/2018 11:16

And revenge

morningtoncrescent62 · 13/08/2018 11:19

Phew, that was quite some episode. I watched it very late last night and haven't had time to catch up with this thread till now.

I loved the moment when all the wives came in behind Serena. If only they'd stayed, they could have accomplished much more. I was willing that to be the start of a wholesale insurrection. And maybe it will be, in time, just not yet.

I can't warm to CLawrence, even after the ending. All those mind games with poor, haunted Emily. Obvs I'm very glad she didn't have to go through another cermony, but I thought the offhand way in which he said, 'not going to do that with you' and dismissed her was horrible, lacking in any kindness whatsoever, just him indulging his own whim. I think helping her to escape was another part of his power trip. In the car made no attempt to treat her like a human being, or give her any reassurance or information about what was happening to her, which must have been torture for her.

I'm worried about Holly-Nichole's well-being. Emily's a broken person and I don't know whether she has it in her to take care of a tiny baby. Practically, it would have been hard enough even for June to take care of her newborn on what's likely to be a long, tough journey. Emotionally, I can't see Emily recovering sufficiently from everything she's been through to give Holly-Nichole a healthy upbringing.

I was with the 'surely June would be able to do more from Canada' brigade until reading this thread, and I've changed my mind now. I love the idea of her posing as Clawrence's handmaid, but I don't see that working - after all, they do go out and about even in a limited way, and Janine would give the game away very quickly! Instead, it looks as though S3 might centre on the underground femaleroad and those wonderful Marthas we saw last night, which would be good - I'd like to get to know them more.

FloralCup · 13/08/2018 11:21

My first thought when I saw the fire was that AL's body would be in there - thus covering up her murder.
If Rita was involved with the Martha network, why were the Handmaid's letters that June was given still at the Waterford's house - surely Rita would have sent them along the network before Nick went to Canada.

SomethingOnce · 13/08/2018 11:23

Remembering Heart of Glass from the protest scene in S1 E3, I liked how the finale used Walking on Broken Glass.

MargoLovebutter · 13/08/2018 11:28

theredjellybean I wondered if June hadn't bonded as well with Holly/Nichole. The baby was clearly removed from her as soon as or very shortly after rescue and then once she was back at the Waterfords she still didn't have access to her for a while. It might be easier to give a baby you haven't bonded with away on an escape attempt, but harder to give up on a daughter you had utterly bonded with and known for 5 years.

In the mother and baby homes, they often used to keep mother and baby separate, apart from feeding to weaken the bond.

Just a thought, because I also wondered how anyone hands over their baby to someone else to try and escape!

SomethingOnce · 13/08/2018 11:29

Do we know if an ambulance arrived for AL? If not, I wonder if they’ll hide the body (if they haven’t already cremated her in the fire) and then say she took the baby, getting Serena and June off the hook.

If AL lives, they may hold her captive, to the same end.

noblegiraffe · 13/08/2018 11:29

CLawrence is surrounded by reminders of the awful things he is responsible for. His mad wife telling everyone the colonies were his idea. A Martha with one eye. A Handmaid who was actually sent to the colonies.

I suspect he isn’t mentally all there either, hence his behaviour with Emily.

SinglePringle · 13/08/2018 11:33

Sorry if this has been mentioned (I have read the thread and couldn’t see it but...)... there’s some talk online of a Series 2 Episode 14 called The Bridge. I have googled and seen it mention but can’t find it to watch / verify. Any thoughts?! My therory is it’s Series 3 Ep1 and people are getting overexcited but thought I’d check here.

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 13/08/2018 12:05

I think my husband looks a bit like Max Minghella... it's brilliant 😂

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 13/08/2018 12:09

But I'm all seriousness I really like C.Lawrence I warmed to him straight away. And actually if you read all the dialect between him and Emily did he say anything head fucking? And I think you could see it in Emily's eyes, she was confused from the start to his behaviour, she just didn't trust anyone to go with her instincts that he was more on her side.

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 13/08/2018 12:13

Also when C.Lawrence and Emily went down to garage and the car started I thought it was quite similar to June's scene in the garage trying to start the car in the snow and the radio came on, a hint that Mayday was possibly happening from the summer house too?
