It has been confirmed series 3 will be the last!
I'm assuming it will be on soon as BBC2 is currently repeating the last series in a late night slot.... Here's hoping?!

Ooh I’m in!

Soooo looking forward to this. DH surprised me with a trip to Versailles last summer, knowing my obsession with this tv series.

Love George Blagden as the Sun King, but Alexander Vlahos is even better Wink, IMHO!

QueenoftheNights · 04/06/2018 17:05

It's the final series because there were too many complaints about the pron in the last series .

youngestisapsycho · 04/06/2018 20:43

@NotQuitePerfect did you enjoy visiting Versailles. Is worth the trip?

OP posts:
youngestisapsycho · 04/06/2018 20:45

Who complained? Why don’t they just not watch it?!

Really enjoyed tonight's episode with the unveiling of the hall of mirrors, it really brought it back how stunning it was in real life

MinesaPinot · 05/06/2018 13:12

I saw it. Loved it, but then I've been an addict since the first series.

I'm with you goose1964, the unveiling of the hall of mirrors was wonderful.

NotQuitePerfect · 05/06/2018 18:32

youngestisapsycho yes it is definitely worth the trip! Astoundingly beautiful and really quite audacious in its scale and magnificence.

Top Tip! Pre-book a place on the Private Apartments (or some similarly named) tour on the website. It's only about 10 Euros extra and is utterly fantastic, you get to see lots of rooms that the general public are not able to access and the tour guide was so informative.

Best of all, it is a ticket to 'skip the line'. The queues when we went (admittedly in July but suspect it is busy all year) were enormous, estimated entry time was about 2hours from joining the queue. Buying the general admission tickets on line does not exempt you from queueing. Once you have completed the private tour you are then left near the entrance to the Hall of Mirrors and off you go to explore the rest of the Palace (with about 10,000 other tourists Wink)

The gardens and grounds were also exceptionally beautiful. The more I think about it, the more I long to return Grin!

Couldn't watch last night, so very excited about settling down later with a glass of something nice Wine and the sub-titles on as I'm getting a bit old and deaf Wink!

Stunningly beautiful as usual. So lovely to have it back but sad it's the last series. I hope they can kind of round it off - or was it cancelled after filming was complete? Louis lived a long time so I doubt they can finish it off unless they do some time jumps. I read that although there were complaints about the sex the series had falling viewer numbers (on the BBC) and as it needs several companies investing in it to pay its large production costs that the BBC pulling out was kind of the death knell.

I do hope Alexander Vahlos et al go on to other juicy roles.

Why did they take the baby.... and where to?

OP posts:
8misskitty8 · 13/06/2018 23:11

Royal Babies at the time were sent away to be brought up with a governess. None of the other royal children are at Versailles.
Poor palatine . That Scarron is coming across as a bitch.

Can’t wait for the next episode.

youngestisapsycho · 19/06/2018 11:25

OK, so I dont watch things properly or concentrate... DH always moaning at me about it! I have questions....
How did Phillipe find out about this guy in the mask and why is he so keen to find out who he is?
What was the queen actually up to, and why did she not go thru with it?
I think I'll watch again on iplayer and concentrate! Lol

OP posts:
kikashi · 19/06/2018 14:27

I think this is what has happened:

Phillipe was asked to select prisoners to go to the colonies and came across an entry in a prison book for a Duke who he had never heard of and couldn't trace which got him intrigued. Phillipe was about to meet the man in the mask when he was whacked over the head and then found himself back in the palace being lied to that he had fallen and that he was mistaken about the man in the mask. Phillipe knew he was being conned so has become obsessed with finding out who the prisoner is.

The Queen was asked by Leopold (Austrian Emperor) her lover to pretend her brother the King of Spain was ill. She would pick up Leopold's niece who is being "kept" at Versailles in the forest en route and take her to Spain to marry the King of Spain (Charles) strengthening Leopold's influence and claim on Spain (over Louis). i think she realised in the coach that Leopold was playing her and turned back. She would have been committing treason against France.

woodhill · 19/06/2018 21:36

I miss the 5 mins commentary afterwards with the man with the stripey top

youngestisapsycho · 19/06/2018 21:52

Thank you Kikashi!

OP posts:
AppleYumYum · 24/06/2018 00:44

I was just wondering what's happened to the cute stripey top man and the history run down afterwards, I enjoyed that part

midlifeblues · 24/06/2018 09:34

Wish they would do more series. It is brilliant

kikashi · 26/06/2018 18:07

I liked that bit where they told you if the story line was largely true (like the satanistic stuff which I had thought was far fetched). I didn't like how they would have an "exopert" on each week and then not let them speak much whilst stripey and curly took over.

I want the Chevalier to throw me a party!! Did Sophie pour poison under the pillow and then fleas/insects sucked it up and one has now gone in the Queen's ear? Does Leopold just want to kill the queen for revenge for not following through on his marriage plan?

Alabasterangel6 · 26/06/2018 20:34

Hello! Real life Louis history info (which you may think constitutes a spoiler!) so don’t read if that makes you cross.

In real life the queen did die relatively early - from a chill caught out on a trip (I wonder if they will formally attribute this in the series to her failed trip and complaints of ill health). I have no idea about the bug I assumed for drama it was a poisoned bug! That part is pure fiction.

Madame du Maintenon seems pretty close to real life other than the timeline. I suspect they knew before writing series 3 that it would be the last as they are fast tracking bits. The queen dies later than the age she is show here, and he marries Maintenon much later - it is a marriage carried out in secret. Not because he doesn’t want people to know but because she’s a ‘commomer’ so he can have a public wedding.

Chevalier is a real life person and I like to imagine he was just as outrageous in real life!

Alabasterangel6 · 26/06/2018 20:36

CAN’T have a public wedding. Ugh.
