We finished it last night. We were watching one or two episodes a night, and each night it took me a good 20 minutes to readjust to Hall’s accent.

Tonic that’s how I felt too, it was as though every syllable was over-formed. I didn’t hear his American accent slip through, which is impressive, but it felt like he was 90% of the way through learning to do the accent, where it still felt very stilted and unnatural.

But then as others say, maybe part of it is just watching too much Dexter / SFU

And yes, the dialogue was a bit dire at times, agreed. I love a good twisty thriller though, even if it’s far fetched.

I was pleasantly surprised with his accent and thought it was spot on tbh, no issue at all.

MissWimpyDimple · 19/05/2018 07:47

I didn't even know he wasn't British!

What I found strange was the concept of the gated community. I don't know any of those IRL in the UK.

I'm not quite done yet, have two episodes to go ...

MissWimpyDimple · 19/05/2018 07:48

Oh and I even googled Sophie as I couldn't quite cope with her very obvious wig! Which shows how little I noticed the accent.

I found the wig quite random!

PavlovaPrincess · 19/05/2018 09:13

Re the gated community. I think this was based on a Harlen Coben book, who as far as I'm aware, is American and sets his novels in America.

But the only two adaptations of his novels that I know about, are British productions where they've switched the locations. I did find it odd that they set this in the U.K. then cast an American actor and made him do a British accent (IYSWIM) but maybe he was the last casting.

TammySwansonTwo · 19/05/2018 09:18

Hall was exec producer so I suspect it could have been his project from the outset. Who knows though. It does seem odd to switch it over like that.

I did think that the premise would probably work better in the original book, since the setting is fairly unrealistic, certainly for the U.K., which is jarring when seeing it alongside normal every day life.

Just finished it and I didn't see the twist coming so I see that as a bonus!

It makes sense that the book was set in America, that sort of community doesn't really exist in the UK. The houses were also SO huge and although that seems ok for the surgeon, the other families don't seem to really have the means for that kind of lifestyle.

Over all though. Really liked that.

TheSecondOfHerName · 19/05/2018 10:32

Haven't seen Safe yet, but the British accents in Designated Survivor are really odd.

Brendatheblender · 19/05/2018 10:34

Worst accent ever?

Russell Crowe in Robin Hood.

He had about 5 different accents throughout the film.

Yamayo · 19/05/2018 16:25

Apparently Russell Crowe worked with a language/dialect archaeologist-like guy who made sure the accent was 100% like what it would have sounded like back in the day...

PartyFearsII · 21/05/2018 12:36

I thought it was good! Very relaxed and natural. DH was surprised when I told him MCH was American.

Peter dinklage in GOT, on the other hand...!

GnotherGnu · 21/05/2018 23:34

I thought it was a right load of rubbish, particularly the early episodes where they were rushing around as if they were in a French farce trying to hide Chris's body. And I never did get why it was apparently being left solely to the father to find the vulnerable missing girl.

makeitalargegin · 21/05/2018 23:38

Did anyone else go weak at the knees when he did certain mannerisms, like when he was playing dexter.

I thought his accent was ok to be fair, but I do have a crush on him Blush

SenecaFalls · 21/05/2018 23:42

I thought he was good; I'm American but have lived in the UK and have a pretty decent ear for accents. I'm a bit prejudiced though. I love Michael C. Hall. Also he's from North Carolina where most of my family is originally from.

PartyFearsII · 22/05/2018 00:56

I thought his accent was ok to be fair, but I do have a crush on him

I'd never seen him in anything before, but yes he is very, very lovely, makeita

TheBogWitchIsBack · 22/05/2018 07:30

I finally finished it last night. I found myself losing interest tbh.
I like Harlen cobens novels but this obviously didn't transfer well onto the screen.

Clawdy · 22/05/2018 09:10

I enjoyed the first episode, but early on in the second episode, the "hiding the body" scenario was so ridiculous, we switched off and gave up. Jumped the shark.

CharDeeMacDennis · 22/05/2018 09:18

Haven't seen this, but surely the worst accent ever is a toss-up between David Boreanaz's attempt at Irish in Buffy and Angel, and dear old Keanu in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

feltcarrot · 22/05/2018 20:25

It was filmed where I live, Hale and Altrincham near Manchester. I couldn’t concentrate on the plot for Location spotting! The school was Altrincham Girls Grammar which Dd attended and the choir were local school children.

deadringer · 23/05/2018 16:31

I thought his accent was very good and usually I find it very jarring when an actor is putting on an accent. I enjoyed Safe but thought it was daft that the daughter just pissed off for days without letting her dad know she was ok. She didn't even know at first that her boyfriend was dead so it's not like she was too scared to go home.

FinnJuhl · 23/05/2018 23:12

Anothet one who was impressed with his accent. Suited his uptight/repressed character well.

I was more struck by the mix of main character London/SE accents and then all the extras' Mancunian accents (where it was filmed).

WhoWants2Know · 24/05/2018 20:46

I found that his accent did distract me a couple of times, but overall it was good. Loved Pete.

But the show did absolutely jump the shark at times. Like the dramatic moment in the secure unit when Craig turns to reveal his half-burned face like Harvey Dent.

eggsandchips · 24/05/2018 20:48

Oh I agree OP. Its driving me mad. Only two episodes left for me though.

eggsandchips · 25/05/2018 00:35

What a predictable ending 😬

TheBogWitchIsBack · 25/05/2018 20:33

Not wanting to derail at all but I've noticed some new shows on Netflix. Has anyone watched Cargo or evil genius?
