Surprised that there isn’t a thread already - unless I’ve missed one?

Anyone watching?

I found last night’s episode a really tough watch in places. The early GCSEs are so, so frustrating. English Lit really rewards maturity and Anne Marie should (and I think would) have got an A* if she had done it in year 11.

I hope the programme has opened some eyes to the incredibly complex challenges of very deprived communities. God bless Carys’s mum for taking in Anne Marie.

Do all schools take GCSEs early now then? I thought it was just exceptionally bright people but weren't there a few people sitting early in these programmes?

Tbh im not sure how much difference an A* vs A would really make and would think it might be considered that well she got A a year early.
But i do think it gave them practice but also extended the stress.
AM mum seeded a bit childlike but i think living at a friends will give her a lot of freedom.
I thought it sad that under such difficult circumstances 2 mums carried on with having more kids.
I felt maybe Shakira was stressed as she already had a disabled sibling, the worry of having another. But also the fact she seemed more talented than say gifted at maths and that maybe that also played out in her behaviour. She became a bit prima-donna. Fiery. But she was so nasty to that poor art teacher. I felt bad for him having to shout at her, being so disrespectful. But partly why i think hanging about on streets is so bad for kids. They can get brainwashed by the lazy/drug taking/drinking etc and the parents literally dont know who.
All this pastoral care seems a lot.
I felt that the boy's dad should have asked more and listened to why he didnt do well in the year 9 exams. Completely disagree with pp that it is making excuses. If the paper is not one for that age group and they havent covered the topics the school wont expect As it's more a baseline. Yes a genius might know.
I would be saying look how you already did. By next year it will likely be twice that.
I did wonder about AM in that her brother had ASD i think and she had whst looked like anxiety.
I notice on child genius how the kids (normally 2 parents or both involved), at least a bright parent or uncle etc. But how much effort the parent etc is putting into the dc. Yes naturalIy bright but getting work planned for them or notes done etc.
