Umbrella - yes I see what you are saying in that Ann has said very recently she is a "70s feminist" and sees modern feminism as "a big whinge" and I guess that is probably related to Amanda telling Shane J to back off - I can imagine what Ann would make of my objection to "mansplaining" for example, given what she has experienced, just as Amanda was a bit IDGAF about her views, I'm married and happy, and saw Shane J as being whingey when Ann cannot do anything about his rights and was not picking on him for being gay.

My (very lovely) MIL and a couple of my friends in their 60s are quite similar in their views re: feminism (and they most definitely are not right or even centre-right politically). They are showing patience with me as much as I am showing patience with them because we can't share the same experiences unless someone is actually saying "you are of lower status because you a woman" etc. So they think I'm making a fuss because the things that trouble me seem like small fry given all the things they have been through, I think they don't understand that new issues have arisen with the internet/social media/ more female exposure in the workplace etc. I know I have been unintentionally pretty condescending to my MIL in the past (as she has been to me in the same vein) but because we get on so well it has been quite interesting and revealing for both of us.

And I know some women reading this are going to weep at this statement.... I think Ann has been quite helpful in clarifying some of my thoughts on this issue. Not even necessarily so much what she's said in the house but because her controversial presence has made me read up more about her and think about my experiences and relationships with women of her age and older.

Miralis - had a similar discussion with an older relative recently. When she first got pregnant, she had to give up work completely. She counts herself lucky she didn't have to give up when she got married and had a few extra years. So, to her, woman today are light years ahead of her at the same age.
