futuristic I almost entirely agree with everything you've said about Ann! People saying she has a really "high" moral compass so that somehow makes her better than the others. Hmm she has an old school conservative somewhat intolerant compass. Others in there may be more liberal than her but still may have high morals - think Maggie and Shane. Who, by the way, she shot down very rudely when Maggie was trying to discuss the church covering up sex abuse. I think Ann definitely does show disapproval with everyone. She's always tutting, rolling her eyes and sighing at them. I imagine they feel like they're being watched by their had teacher

futuristic1 · 19/01/2018 19:11

Women are always judged for having strong opinions. A man wouldn't get half the stick Ann is getting.

Yes he would - think Jacob Rees-Mogg - Ann's fellow Catholic fundamentalist. He's come in for a bit of stick lately - rightly!

Having strong beliefs and sticking to them regardless is not necessarily admirable - it really does depend on the nature of those beliefs.
Some beliefs (and I count many of Ann's amongst those) are abhorrent to any reasonable person.

Ann Widdicombe and her ilk, are the enemies of anyone who genuinely desires a society of equal opportunity for all people regardless of sex/gender.

I don't think she would deny that and nor will I applaud her for it.

I hope she stays in to remind us of all that is wrong with fundamentalist believers and the Conservative Party.

She's a great recruiting sergeant for the Opposition and perfectly illustrates why we need more for mindfulness and compassion in society.

Keep Ann in - lest we forget.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 19/01/2018 19:20

walking you are absolutely right about how women are viewed as young and desirable and then suddenly no longer desirable so what's the point. Did you watch The Feud (about Bette Davis and Joan Crawford)? covers pretty much that entire subject in Hollywoods heydays, it was very interesting.

MrsJayy · 19/01/2018 19:29

OH I binged watched Feud at the weekend it was outstanding if any of you get a chance to watch it do was the best thing i have watched in ages.

SoleBizzz · 19/01/2018 19:36

Feud is superb. I watched the pilot episode on T.V and straight afterwards the whole series on iPlayer.

I need a Mamacita.

SoleBizzz · 19/01/2018 19:42

CBB tonight 9pm to 10pm C5

Live Eviction 19.30pm - 11.05pm C5

BOTS 11.05pm - 12am C5

I haven't found a Live Feed for tonight.

BeyondWW · 19/01/2018 19:42

I don't think anyone has disagreed with your stance on Ann's politics (in fact I think nigh on everyone has said they strongly disagree), they've just said that they are enjoying watching a strong older woman?

Just catching up on the bots I've missed this week before tonight's show...

SoleBizzz · 19/01/2018 19:43

Live Eviction 10.30pm - 11.05pm C5

SinisterBumFacedCat · 19/01/2018 19:49

futuristic I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years time Jacob Rees Mog will be a housemate and everyone will be saying he's a wonderful individual who knows his own mind.

I also have a very strong moral code and it is pretty much at odds with everything Ann W has ever stood for as an MP or expressed in her career as a mouth for hire. I also think that she nominated Maggie because she questioned her about abuse in the Catholic Church and AW couldn't think of an answer and instead dismissed her with a trademark cutting remark.

PandasRock · 19/01/2018 19:54

I don't think anyone has defended Ann's politics.

I have pointed out that I don't like the reasons she is being vilified in the house. If anyone was taking her to task over her views on gay marriage, for e.g., then I'd welcome the discussion.

But to ridicule and insult her because she is old, has a different idea of appropriate sexual behaviour, and won't engage with people trying to get a rise out of her is just odd, frankly.

But that's society, isn't it? She isn't young or attractive, so not desirable. She won't reign in her opinions so as not to upset the menz (which, given her views on how men should be treated is quite something), and she won't accept a lowlife position in discussions (usually expected of women).

The lads are feeling discomforted by her refusing to be put into a box. As a pp said, Andrew thought he could soft soap her with a few compliments, and now that that hasn't worked, he's left with nothing. Dapper seemingly can't respond to any situation without bringing it all down to sex and crudity, so nothing new there. Haven't seen enough of Jonny in the edit to know anything about him at all, except he is mostly happy to go along with the bantz, and not a strong enough character to stand up against it even if he does think it's going too far.

PandasRock · 19/01/2018 19:58

I wish Maggie had pushed that conversation further, about the Catholic Church. But I wonder whether it would have been shown, even if she had. There has to be more interested conversations going on than the crap being shown - the house cannot have deteriorated this far from that first few days - but we are only being shown the supposed potential for sex, lads talking about sex, and griping and sniping.

Poor effort from the editors, tbh.

Chipstick10 · 19/01/2018 19:58

futuristic not a fan of the Tories then ? Smile

HelenaDove · 19/01/2018 20:07

"Women are always judged for having strong opinions. A man wouldn't get half the stick Ann is getting"

Would you like me to link the Jacob Rees Mogg threads in here?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 19/01/2018 20:13

Jacob Rees Mogg has been nowhere near as vilified as Ann is being.

Anyway, I would rather a political candidate was honest and told me their opinion however much I disagreed with it, because then I could make a reasonable decision before casting my vote. Against abortion? Fine - I won't vote for you. Lie about real opinions and then appall me later once I've voted for you under false pretences? Pretty much every politician. I know which I find more despicable.

I've only had the time to skim read some of the thread today, but am finding the discussions about Ann the best thing about this series.

Wholly agree with the comment about women only having a certain place or role to fill in the minds of some younger men people.

Am quite fascinated on Ann's dammed if you do and dammed if you don't position. She either stays true to herself and sticks to her own principles and is vilified for it, or? she changes her type, bends with the crew and totally goes against it and...?

India had a perfect platform to promote her personal experiences and issues, but seemed to alienate more than she found sympathizers.

No idea who'll go tonight, I'm just an interested observer who's enjoying pondering all the debates this series is throwing up.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 19/01/2018 20:25

Despite what some people may think this is meant to be a good-natured thread where people agree to disagree so piss off with your condescending "head tilts" and post like a grown up with an opinion of your own.

OP posts:
pippitysqueakity · 19/01/2018 20:33

And, if I remember correctly which I may not do cos my heads a marshmallow atm, the Catholic Church/abuse debate was derailed by I W saying they were not on Panorama?

BringMeTea · 19/01/2018 20:36

No, it was Tranorama.

MimpiDreams · 19/01/2018 20:37

I never thought I'd say this, but I miss India.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 19/01/2018 20:42

Oddschecker has not removed Dapper from the eviction betting odds and hasn't added Maggie. Is this because a Rachel and John eviction is so much of a done deal that companies aren't taking bets any longer or is something up?

OP posts:
RubyJack · 19/01/2018 20:43

Does anyone in real life actually head tilt?

BeyondWW · 19/01/2018 20:44

Well, only when I need to crack my neck... Grin

AnneEyhtMeyer · 19/01/2018 20:46

Only when I've taken a photo the wrong way round before remembering that I just have to turn the phone!

OP posts:
SoleBizzz · 19/01/2018 20:59

CBB starting now.

sheldonesque · 19/01/2018 21:00

Noooooooooooooooooooooo.

I've just been called into work. I'm relying on the sisterhood to keep me updated here.

I head tilted when I got called in. I suspect that's because my anguished 'oh no' face and associated wide mouthed groan buggered something in my neck.

C'mon Ann. I'll be keeping all crossed for you.
