I certainly am

I don't think it's a good as it was when it first started, and it can be a tad predictable at times but I still love this show

It's all getting a bit too happy clappy. The original stories didn't always have happy endings but I was still enjoying it, the ludicrous baby in the bag in the Christmas special and this series so far are not really doing it for me. Shame. And sister happy and annoying is becoming less and less nun like. We used to see the nuns that there were doing nursing, being involved and while I know the order became more and more diminished but happy nun could just be a nurse like the rest of them except for her habit and otherwise there is no feeling of being part of an order at all, they could just as well be a bunch of nurses in shared accommodation.

Mammabear31 · 28/01/2018 21:07

Loved this episode, I love how they are portraying the social changes with men more involved etc. Still a long way to go though!

How on earth did they get Marges face to stay the way it did?

Toddlerteaplease · 28/01/2018 21:10

I agree about them being less 'nun like' no more going to chapel, or saying their offices. Or any mention of church at all.

SimonBridges · 28/01/2018 21:11

I have the exact book that Trixie had at the beginning.

And does it tell you to put grapefruit under the grill?

BikeRunSki · 28/01/2018 21:29

I did a grilled grapefruit for my Brownie Cook’s badge. Must have been around 1977.

SimonBridges · 28/01/2018 21:31

These are the only two grapefruit recipes I can find.

Settling down to call the midwife on a Sunday evening makes me so happy 😊

I kept noticing trixies bump as well bless her, there are def hints that she is thinking divorced man is going to propose, I hope she doesn't end up heartbroken 😯

Sgt jobsworth is very annoying.

Would it have been the norm for unmarried nurses or midwives to stay in nursing accommodation and never get their own places? I feel like nurse crane should have enough money saved up from years of working and not having to pay for rent or food 😂

BikeRunSki · 28/01/2018 22:02

I might be wrong, but I think Nurse Crane used her money to support her mother (war widow?).

StripySocksAndDocs · 28/01/2018 22:24

I don't want anything to bad happen to Trixie!!

Vulgarlady · 28/01/2018 22:32

Did anyone else think that the au pair looked a bit like a Megan Markle?

BeyondWitchbitchterf · 28/01/2018 22:37

Anne, I only just saw the post about the teal nighty Grin

Housewife2010 · 28/01/2018 22:51

I have Trixies Home Management book too.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 28/01/2018 22:52

Maybe bike nurse crane came from a single mum I seem to remember, am guessing she would be fairly elderly by now.

StripySocksAndDocs · 28/01/2018 23:06

Anyone see this tweet: twitter.com/princessemla/status/955583876847538177

Someone tweeted that about her gran, who was a midwife called Anderson and was from the West Indies.

RaininSummer · 28/01/2018 23:18

I love it for the social history too. I was born not a million miles from the east end and was a baby in that terrible winter. My mum says lots of babies died that year it was so cold. I like the new midwife. I love the way the whole series shows the resilience and sisterhood of women. I like dog poo face doctor but his wife is so saccharine sweet.

ameli · 29/01/2018 00:33

Enjoyed it so sad about lady with the stroke ...@girlfriend me too the music very uplifting too lol

Margsus · 29/01/2018 07:04

Vulgarlady I thought she looked very much like Meghan Markle!

SoupDragon · 29/01/2018 07:11

I assumed they used prosthetics for Marge’s face. She didn’t seem to gain any movement back on her left side, I thought they would have a tree hand squeeze at the end when they showed her husband put his hand on hers. Very sad.

Trixie does look incredibly pregnant now I’ve realised she is. I just didn’t notice last week!

SoupDragon · 29/01/2018 07:11

The whole au pair thing is very funny.

SoupDragon · 29/01/2018 07:15

I agree about them being less 'nun like' no more going to chapel, or saying their offices. Or any mention of church at all.

They had some nun singing last week. How much nuns stuff did they have in previous series? I only really remember the odd singing scene where extra nuns appeared from nowhere.

SimonBridges · 29/01/2018 08:02

It isn’t a ‘Godly’ as it was at all is it.

CurbsideProphet · 29/01/2018 08:39

I still love Call The Midwife, but it is more obvious now that the stories have been created in a modern era.

It does mame to laugh to see Helen George trying to disguise her bump with a blanket/book etc. I wonder if they will take inspiration from Calendar Girls and have her standing behind cake stands etc Grin

The football coach story was a bit cheesy and predictable (good acting though).

The hairdresser's story was far more interesting. I'm so glad that the husband found some confidence in the end. I really like the woman who played the grandmother - I recall first seeing her in something years ago where she was a young bank clerk who had an affair with a married taxi driver played by Keith Barron.

I agree that the religious aspect has been sidelined. The three remaining sisters just seem like nurses who happen to wear habits. They mentioned grace at the dinner table last night but other than that it seems more "secular" than the early series, with no "conflict"(too strong a word but I can't think of a better one) at all.
