Time for yet another thread...

OP posts:
BeyondWW · 11/01/2018 11:44

You know what keeps standing out to me as lacking in this "year of the woman" CBB? As they have clearly thought outside the box with inclusion of Maggie, and have a few women who are there for their brains (RJ and AW in particular), I'm surprised they didn't get a knowledgable prominent feminist in there. Someone older - so they don't come across as [scare quotes] "snowflake generation" - who can disagree with the older women who eg are fine with catcalling

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 11/01/2018 11:48

Actually I think there's quite a range of views discussed here, yes a majority lean one way but I don't think it's an echo chamber. The BB threads have always had people who speak their own mind whether or not it's in accord with the majority and we rarely have any ill feeling over differing opinions.

I thought last night's programme and BOTS hit the nail on the head for me, particularly Marcus's voice over about India returning to India's favourite subject, Shane L giving India advice - which regardless of any labelling is what most people agree with and the impressionist on BOTS. His observations of India were spot on, starting with the body posture he adopted, bending slightly forward, shoulders hunched down, sullen expression, really bringing the mood down. Perhaps she's only ever been surrounded by 'yes men' up to now and all this has come as a big shock to her?

I think India has a game plan too, but it's not working and she's had all her thunder stolen by Courtney/Shane, who easily engages with everyone. She'll either find this a bit learning curve, or curse that she got it so wrong.

Totally different topic. Hair. I googled to see if there was anything out there about Rachel J's hairdresser and found a link to a salon who also had a link with Claudia Winkleman. It's at 1 Sloane Square and the look on my face when I saw the prices would have to be seen to be believed Shock Not saying it definitely is her salon and I think she's always had the same style, but now seems to have a lovely shine that's hard to achieve on blonde hair.

Loved finding this throwback photo

My search also turned up this article about Rachel's mother, which I found really interesting

QueenLaBeefah · 11/01/2018 12:01

Yes - I think Shourtney has some mansplaining tendencies.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 11/01/2018 12:06

I love those throwback pictures Enrique. Interesting article too. Thanks

mirialis · 11/01/2018 12:12

The Big Brother Little Brother/BOTS that I've seen have always seemed to have panellists ripping into contestants so maybe that's why it feels like they were pandering - but will definitely accept I'm wrong on that front as have not watched anywhere near enough of them to disagree!

Chipstick10 · 11/01/2018 12:16

Enrique thanks for those links. I think they are a rather striking, stunning family. All brilliantly clever in their own way. Through my children’s jobs I have it on good authority that Boris is lots of fun

papayasareyum · 11/01/2018 12:38

I love Courtney/Shane but am a bit Hmm at her constantly going on about her wild, exotic, experimental sex life with lots of group sex etc.. seems a bit odd and exhibitionist to tell almost strangers everything about your sex life, or perhaps I’m just an old fashioned old fart

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 11/01/2018 13:02

That's one of the beauties of the mix of Big Brother though isn't it. On the one hand Shane's telling all about a threesome with two lesbians while a hetero couple had sex on the sofa and then you have the contrast of

I've been tickling myself watching old clips of Ann on Strictly, she seemed to take it all in good part, especially with her partner, Anton. Have a look at her Salsa and Samba and there's a montage of Ann against the Judges. She took it all in very good part.
Be warned it's ten minutes

CrookBook · 11/01/2018 13:04

So, do we think India or Johnny will go??

Chipstick10 · 11/01/2018 13:06

Johnny will definitely go.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 11/01/2018 13:09

I think Jonny, but I'd rather Andrew had been up.

As I obviously have too much time on my hands at the moment, another link. It's over 10 years since John Barnes did Strictly

Thehairthebod · 11/01/2018 13:11

I don’t want to think this, after such a good start, but I am wondering if Courtney/Shane is turning into a tiny bit of a mansplainer, by explaining to others what it feels like for a woman, or what women are thinking. I really hope not but I am going to be looking out for it from now...

I think it's that the boys keep asking him stuff though isn't it? I think they think that he maybe 'gets' women in a way that they don't, and feel 'safer' asking him? He isn't mansplaining anything to the women is he?

There is another thread on feminism at the moment talking about why the men are so attracted to Courtney and its kind of depressing really!

Germaine Greer was on CBB once wasn't she? She would have been AMAZING in this series!

'No tanswomen are not women' Grin

Missrabbitneedsabreak · 11/01/2018 13:14

I don't know that IW will go. She's not interesting enough to vote for even in a car crash kind of way. She's not entertainingly awful like Perez or Bear. She's just become a bit sullen and dull to watch. I don't really know what opinion is going on elsewhere but are the LGBT community liking her much? She's shown herself to just be a bit of an arse, even if I can feel sorry for her and empathise with some of her feelings/ actions she's just not likeable or watchable so I'm not sure who will vote for her?

Alwaysinmyheart · 11/01/2018 13:15

RE having femininists in the house, imagine if someone like Julie Bindel had gone in? Now THAT would have been interesting...!

Whisky2014 · 11/01/2018 13:19

Unfortunately I think Johnny will go.

busyboysmum · 11/01/2018 13:25

Oooh yes feminists in the house - that would have been amazing.

Chipstick10 · 11/01/2018 13:31

Julie Bindel ?! Oh god no thanks. I want entertaining .
Someone up thread mentioned Bear. And I agree, although he was awful he was watchable. India just isn’t. Even this new game plan that we are supposed to be witnessing is contrived and dull

MsGameandWatching · 11/01/2018 13:38

This thread has become a bit of an echo chamber but it's not representative of the views of all the population in RL. I've just listened to a really interest (feminist) podcast on the whole gender labelling debate and it's very different to what has been expressed on here.

If find it interesting that you say that. For myself I have found the direct opposite on all the social media (too much!) I am on. I see a trickle that is steadily becoming a flood of people who are beginning to realise that trans inclusivity doesn't just mean acknowledging choices and acting appropriately and decently but actually calls for them to abandon their own belief system right down to who they're even physically attracted to lest they be shamed and labelled bigots and TERFS. They're seeing that it cannot even be discussed at the most basic level. I also used to see a great deal of "Trans Women Are Women, End Of" etc. I am not seeing that any more.

CecilyNeville · 11/01/2018 13:39

So India heard the booing at her name on nominations night, realised she was unpopular with the viewers, and rushed straight to the diary room with her 'game plan' announcement and intentions to pick off 'the coven'. Hoping this would intrigue the audience enough to save her and buy her some more time in the house. C5 are supporting this idea, as it makes idea seem to be a player, instead of an arsehole. Unfortunately, the public are fairly savvy: we see the arsehole.

MsGameandWatching · 11/01/2018 13:48

Just to add though, I'm not sure that BOTS trying to channel critical discussion around IW is an entirely negative thing, IW is clearly struggling with their choices and situation. I think it could become out of hand and pitch fork waving rather rapidly. That said I remember the contestant "Grace" who threw the glass of water as she left. She was utterly vilified; called the most hate BB contestant ever, even the most hated woman in the UK and no one reined it in. I believe she was 19.

MrsJayy · 11/01/2018 13:50

Julie Bindel is a total arsehole I would be tearing my ears off listening to her drone on and on

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 11/01/2018 14:09

When Jade Goody was in the house, they changed the editing very quickly when it looked like she was becoming hated, both times in fact, both normal and Celebrity.

I think India presents as an unpleasant person regardless of self identification. I think, had the unpleasantness been presented in a more generic way, ie rowing with Ann over the bed, but not centred on the trans issue, her trans status would have been far more of a non-issue, certainly among the housemates. Some people might have been unhappy about a transwoman being included in the group of women but it would have stopped more or less there.

elektrawoman · 11/01/2018 14:14

Just watched CBBOTS on catch up. I noticed when Lady C said ‘India has a medical problem’ Rylan very quickly stepped in and said corrected it saying ‘India is transgender and does not have a medical problem’ so they are obviously being cautious.
I haven’t watched CBB in years so can’t comment on whether India is being treated more or less fairly than previous housemates.

MrsJayy · 11/01/2018 14:23

India said the other night she had body dysmorphia which is a medical issue lady c was right Rylan is probably getting dizzy this series. Lauren Harres was a total nightmare to talk about on bbots and Lauren got to the final if India gets to the final Rylan will explode Grin

1wokeuplikethis · 11/01/2018 14:36

Is it body dismorphia or body disphoria? I've heard it called the latter a lot on bb but always thought it was the former.

Anyway, just watched for the first time rupauls drag race with Courtney in, it is brilliantly bonkers. And finally realised that Courtney Act is a play on words...caught in the act....how did that one go over my head?! Fab.
