BLACK MIRROR DISCUSSION WITH SPOILERS

Okay so I don't think I could have made it any clearer that spoil will be rampant in here.

I just finished binging series four. Therefore I am emotionally compromised by black mirror and saying oh my god a lot.

• USS Callister was amazing, and sad but mostly amazing.
• Arkangel was a headfuck because my step-daughter is around the same age as the girl was when she got the implant.
• Crocodile was kind of a disappointment for me but I like the fact that she was outed as a killer by a guinea pig.
• Hang The DJ is basically where I expect the horrors of Tinder to progress in the next however many decades. I could see the ending coming but it didn't make it any less brilliant.
• Metalhead was fantastic black and white dystopian horror, and now I demand a legion of robot dogs to do my bidding. I realise I might die at their behest but it would be worth it for small METAL TERROR.
• Black Museum was absolute fucking genius. So so satisfying.

Please someone fangirl with me before I splode.

Series three is still my favourite though. San Junipero made me cry happy tears and the rest of the series was just mindfuckingly some of the best tv I have ever seen.

Oh my god- so good. Still have 2 to watch but really really impressed so far. I have seen: USS Callister, Arkangel, Crocodile and Hang the DJ.

NapQueen · 30/12/2017 21:16

Dh and I have just watched USS Callister absoloutley rapt with attention. It was amazing. Id have liked to see what Nicole did after she acquired the stuff out of his fridge, only for presumably, him to be found dead when not returning to work.

CaptainHammer · 30/12/2017 21:41

tormundsbeard Yes it was filmed in Iceland.

Flomper · 30/12/2017 23:15

just watched uss callister and then Arkangel. Found Arkangel very disturbing, because I totally would have used one of those systems if theyd been arpund afew years ago. May have ro lay off monitoring my year 8s phone a bit now ...

chipscheeseandcurrysauce · 30/12/2017 23:38

Arkangel was good but disturbing and Crocodile was brilliant. Onto Hang the DJ, I saw the trailer for this one; so far so good.

BattleCuntGalactica · 31/12/2017 03:56

The thing with Arkangel was that I know full well that I'd use something like that if I had the chance, and THAT bothers me. All we want to do is keep our kids safe, but then Arkangel was a perfect example of how that would get waaaaaay out of hand.

I’ve watched them all now. Black Museum was creepy and wonderful - I missed a few Easter eggs as I was knitting at the same time so will need to watch again. I loved Hang the DJ.

Crocodile was good but a bit strange in how she spiralled into a killing spree so quickly. I didn’t buy that the self-preservation instinct could go that far. Loved that the guinea pig’s memories were recalled to catch her though.

BattleCuntGalactica · 31/12/2017 06:54

Imagine going through all the trouble to off people, only to be outed by a guinea pig. That was properly hilarious. It wasn't my favourite episode but it was quite delicious.

Finished the series, I definitely think it's the best season yet.. my ranking of episodes is:

6 - Black Museum
4 - Hang the DJ (I loved the happy ending)
5 - Metalhead
3 - Crocodile
1 - USS Callister
2 - Arkangel

I don't know if any of you are familiar with Karl Pilkington & the podcasts he did...but if you are then the themes of Black Museum should be extremely familiar.

He talked about an invention which would allow doctors to feel what their patients were AND he had an idea for a film called The Love Of Two Brains (starring Rebecca DeMornay and Clive Warren*) where a woman in a coma's consciousness was put into her husbands head...although all they argued about was whether to have cornflakes for breakfast.

(*He meant Clive Owen).

Just saying.

TabbyMack · 01/01/2018 07:56

Mysterious bold fail there.

Gierg · 01/01/2018 08:56

@TabbyMack

Yes!!! I knew it was a Karl Pilkington story! And Ricky and Steve laughed their heads off... maybe Karl should write his own series of dystopian nightmares.

ValleyClouds · 01/01/2018 20:01

My understanding of Metalhead at the end was that based on their dialogue their entire mission was not one of survival like food but to replace the toy of a child in the group that was wearing out. Perhaps I'm wrong.

TeachesOfPeaches · 01/01/2018 22:50

Just blasted through every episode. Metal head was a stressful watch and I loved Hang the DJ.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/01/2018 23:05

their entire mission was not one of survival like food but to replace the toy of a child in the group that was wearing out.

I don't know without watching it again, but (at first) I got the impression that someone in their party was sick so they were looking for something that 'would help them', giving the impression that they were after medicine.

Then at the end it turned out they were after a teddy which makes it even bleaker.

Also, when the camera went back to the warehouse I thought the twist was going to be that the 'dogs' were originally Amazon delivery drones that had turned rogue against humanity Blush

Flomper · 01/01/2018 23:12

I thought it was very heavily suggested that the dogs were an Amazon warehouse security feature that went wrong and wiped out most of humanity.

CookiePolicy · 01/01/2018 23:21

Only Black Museum left for me to watch. Another brilliant series. Left totally disturbed again tonight by Metalhead!
Why was Crocodile called that? Am I missing something?

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 01/01/2018 23:27

Loved them all... hope they hurry up with a series 5!

I just didn’t understand why the pain addiction storyline was a part of black museum... it was great, but didn’t really have a purpose in the story?

ValleyClouds · 02/01/2018 11:07

Like an earlier poster I was annoyed by the fake Scouse accents in Crocodile. Their Scouseness wasn't relevant to the story.

I felt that it was definitely meant to be set in the UK but the snowiness etc was a nod to Climate Change

I did feel that some of the technologies this time were a bit rehashed. Black Museum for instance was a bit like half White Bear half White Christmas and a lot of use of the memory disk things from Entire History

The pain story in Black Museum comes from a short story by the magician Penn Jillette which may explain why it doesn't fit quite.

I read that Black Museum serves as a kind of series ender as the deal with Netflix has run out.

I'm sure Netflix would want to renew but whether Charlie does, as the last one does sort of wrap it all up neatly.

I find myself wondering a lot about chronology now that it's an established shared universe e.g.

Hated In The Nation comes after National Anthem, 15 Million Merits and White Christmas

Crocodile must come before Entire History of You because the memory capture is more crude but it comes after 15 million merits, because of the porn film in the hotel. It must come after Callister because it's the same pizza firm but in Crocodile it's a service vehicle and in Callister they have human delivery still

Be Right Back comes before White Christmas because the technology is a robot built off social media, but in Callister and beyond they have digital cloning.

I'll drive myself mad with this

wherethevioletsgrow · 02/01/2018 13:51

I'm just on Crocodile now- the main thing for me (being a Liverpudlian) is noticing the accents. Hers isn't too bad, although it slides into Irish a bit too much. Her boyfriend's is shocking

Interesting since Andrew Gower who plays the boyfriend is actually from Merseyside... Grin

CaptainBrickbeard · 02/01/2018 13:57

Only seen USS Callister and Arkangel so far. I thought Arkangel was so convincing. It was easy to see how you would get sucked into using it and how terrible and violating it would be, but how seductive when all you want as a parent is to keep your child safe. Charlie Brooker is a genius; the scenarios are all so plausible. I thought for sure the girl was heading for the train tracks and would commit suicide in a horrible symmetry with the opening scene.

ThisisrealityGreg · 02/01/2018 14:23

I've seen the first 3. Absolutely loved USS Callister - great story behind it, just the right amount of tension, but also for fully embracing and romping around in the world of pre-CGI space TV. It was great fun although I wasn't sure who was going to come out as winner as you never know with BM. I thought it was fab from start to finish.

Crocodile was good but I also didn't understand quite how she came to be driven to such lengths. And would they really get the info from the piggy given that the humans had to be told to recreate the scene in their minds? But anyway....
