"What's a computer?"

I can't remember what it's advertising, but at the end of this ad there's a girl lying on the grass with an open laptop in front of her. The mum (?) asks "What are you doing on your computer?" And the girl answers "What's a computer?"

Can anyone explain what that means please?

It’s a iPad. They’re trying to say the word “computer” is out of date and not something young kids talk about.

Heratnumber7 · 28/12/2017 16:48

Thanks Sassy!

😀

Obvs I'm
A Luddite, because I didn't realise iPads could have keyboards, but it does make sense now.

I hate the advert. The kid seems so smug about it

HarrietKettleWasHere · 28/12/2017 16:51

Well I think she comes across as an insolent little shite 😂

Hassled · 28/12/2017 16:51

The kid knows damn well what a computer is and yes, she's smug as shite.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 28/12/2017 16:52

I personally think it's grounds for iPad confiscation but I'm probably a bit harsh Grin

leccybill · 28/12/2017 16:55

Ha, I use the word computer in class sometimes and my teens give me a look like I'm 94 years old.
Same applies with 'world wide web', 'surfing', 'chatting' (as in chat rooms- a forgotten concept) and curiously, the word stereo.

Taffeta · 28/12/2017 16:59

My DS flinches when I use “screen”

Yy if that was my kid, it’d be a screen ban for lip

InsomniacAnonymous · 28/12/2017 17:16

"My DS flinches when I use “screen”"

What on earth is wrong with "screen"?

Flomper · 28/12/2017 17:19

they only recognise ipad or laptop. Or Mac if theyre really spoilt.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 28/12/2017 17:21

What are we supposed to say instead of screen? Confused

And yes I hate that ad for that stupid line alone.

Heratnumber7 · 28/12/2017 17:39

Screen = monitor, maybe?

SassySausageSupper · 28/12/2017 17:59

There’s a case/cover you can buy for the iPad Pro which is also a keyboard. I think the ad is really annoying and seems to be on all the time.

mercurymaze · 29/12/2017 21:25

this ad annoys me too! it's right daft

NotCornflakes · 29/12/2017 21:26

I hate that advert! Of course the kid knows what a bloody computer is. Hmm

PinkBuffalo · 29/12/2017 21:35

I thought I was the only one finding to kid so irritating. I've been saying of course they know what a computer is!! I thought it was a neighbour though, not the mum?
As an aside, I'm in my 30s and still use the term video when watching something recorded Grin I always catch myself out!

TheFSMisreal · 29/12/2017 21:36

An iPad is a computer (obviously). Its a terrible ad that makes their product look bad

SimonBridges · 29/12/2017 21:38

Children don’t see iPads as computers. The only thing young children see as computers now are desk top computers, and when did you last see one of those?

crazycatgal · 29/12/2017 21:39

I don't think their ad makes the product look bad, they're suggesting that computers are old technology and the iPad pro is the future.

FrostyThirties0 · 29/12/2017 21:42

My mum uses the word ‘taped’ still and my kids haven’t a clue what she’s in about.

As in ‘I taped Casualty last night so I didn’t miss it’.

mercurymaze · 29/12/2017 21:44

simon we have a desktop computer, dh calls it the 'super computer' and we all like to use it still. Grin

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 29/12/2017 21:46

My kids yell at the screen ‘is she stupid?’ Grin

Danglingmod · 29/12/2017 21:49

The students at school ask "can we go on the laptops?" when they mean "desktops." But they don't know that word when I correct them...

thatstoast · 29/12/2017 21:51

when did you last see one of those?

Everyday in work. That kid will have a shock when she enters the world of work and has to use ie7 because her employer won't invest in IT infrastructure.

Danglingmod · 29/12/2017 22:37

Or even XP? Grin
