"What's a computer?"

I can't remember what it's advertising, but at the end of this ad there's a girl lying on the grass with an open laptop in front of her. The mum (?) asks "What are you doing on your computer?" And the girl answers "What's a computer?"

Can anyone explain what that means please?

Simon we have desktop computers in work (HQ of major bank), and I imagine lots of other offices do too.

It's a great excuse for not being able to do "flexible working"

Every time this advert comes on my husband asks me whether it's a boy or a girl. I just give him the fluid gender spiel 🤣

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 29/12/2017 23:01

frosty i sometimes ask DH or DS to "tape" something on Sky. Of course I mean Sky +, but I open my mouth and my mother comes out.

TheWitchAndTrevor · 29/12/2017 23:25

Ds has a desk top computer, and is into programming, gaming and graphic design.

He hates the advert too for the stupid smug "what's a computer line".

leccybill · 29/12/2017 23:59

We've got a desktop in the spare room which DH occasionally uses. He says "I'm just off to fire up the enigma" Grin

ineedamoreadultieradult · 30/12/2017 00:07

Of course kids know what a computer is. The might not use the word themselves but they definitely know it. I still say 'taped' for when I've recorded something on the virgin box to watch later. I did get my head around 'sky plussed' when we had Sky but now we have Virgin I don't know how else to say it.

Xmasbaby11 · 30/12/2017 00:12

Ooh i hate that advert. They should know what a computer is. Desktops are in use in the workplace and many families have them!

EngagedWithALeaf · 30/12/2017 00:12

When I want to listen to a guided meditation audio on YouTube that I find relaxing I frequently ask DH to find “the meditation tape”. I’m 30. Blush

SimonBridges · 30/12/2017 00:21

Yes, I concede that many people see desktop computers at work.
That child is about 10. I doubt the go to work all that often.

ijustwannadance · 30/12/2017 01:00

Every time I see it I just think no kid that age would walk around by mine with an Ipad out in the open. It would get stolen!

underthebluemoon · 30/12/2017 01:17

I watch it just to see her (him?) do that flippy down thing on the shop counter top. It's so fast. My life is that dull that it interests me.

brizzledrizzle · 30/12/2017 01:27

desk top computers, and when did you last see one of those?

Every day at work. They also have them in schools, budgets rarely stretch to replace them with more modern technology presumably.

brizzledrizzle · 30/12/2017 01:28

but I open my mouth and my mother comes out.

I haven't seen the ad but my 9 year old scorned me today for referring to his Nintendo Switch as a "computer game". Apparently it's not a computer game, it's a video game?!? Hmm

Footle · 30/12/2017 10:44

I might go and fire up Enigma too, if I can find the starting handle.

SandyDenny · 30/12/2017 10:51

I think that advert's silly too, primary school children ime know what computers are, they have them in schools.

I know that some schools give all pupils tablets but in all the schools my DC have been to they have desktops and laptops and I can't believe they are unique.

I heard a young Mum say to her toddler the other day that she needed to flush the chain in the toilet. I did wonder what the child would make of a reference to a chain, the Mum was barely old enough to have known a toilet with an actual chain.

JustDanceAddict · 30/12/2017 11:37

Such an annoying advert!

JustDanceAddict · 30/12/2017 11:40

And my 13 yr old DS bought a PC instead of a laptop for gaming purposes! So he def knows what one is.

Gingernaut · 30/12/2017 11:45

Extremely muggable, gender neutral child, with suitable name "Scout", carrying very expensive tech, apparently making itself busy doing naff all, learning nothing useful about computers and programming and selling us a lifestyle which Apple can facilitate.

I hate the entire ad.

PinkBuffalo · 30/12/2017 12:03

Is she gender neutral? Just looked like a normal little girl to me (albeit very smug!)

MsGameandWatching · 30/12/2017 12:22

That advert is annoying as fuck, I am so glad I find a thread about it Grin

My children are 11 and 14, they know what a computer is!

MsGameandWatching · 30/12/2017 12:24

The only thing young children see as computers now are desk top computers, and when did you last see one of those?

About five minutes ago, DS has one, he's 14 and it's best for the games he likes to play. He has an iPad too but prefers the desk top.

I'd never have paid attention to it myself but my DD gets annoyed every time this advert is on. She's 8 and got a laptop for Christmas - whenever someone asks what she's got, she says 'a computer', I had no idea the word was in disuse.
