I don't suppose anyone wants to talk about the Wire to me?

I'm not going to lie I started it three times and gave up. Then I discovered subtitles and my Wire viewing changed and now I get all the fuss. It's up there with The Sopranos for me. I have t binged it. It's taken me a couple of years to get through it I've been so disturbed and drained by it.

I've got two episodes left and no booze and I stopped smoking six months ago. I don't know whether to just watch them now or save one.

Anyways is anyone up for a wire chat when I finishh it? Doesn't Dominic West play the sexy damaged guy well?

Well that was just brilliant but I did think the whole jimmy thing was abit of a stretch

The fifth season is not as good as the rest IMO. The third and fourth are outstanding- having Avon and Stringer do each other over was a master stroke. We are currently watching it through for the third time. The fourth season is so emotional.

EachandEveryone · 20/08/2017 21:55

I know. TBH the whole newspaper thing didn't grab me and I feel bad because that's obviously the one that was close to the writers heart. I just didn't really get it. And what they made jimmy do was outrageous do you think he got his pension after all that?

I love it.
It's the best series ever!

Stringer Bell makes me swoon!

stitchglitched · 20/08/2017 22:07

I'm obsessed with The Wire. Season 5 was the weakest, it felt rushed and less in depth than the others. But I think I read somewhere that it coincided with the writer's strike and so had to be cut short.

Quodlibet · 20/08/2017 22:13

The Wire is one of the greatest fiction works ever in my opinion. Agree about series 5 - I guess that Jimmy's downfall was perhaps meant to be indicative of Baltimore's rot getting to everyone in the end? But yep, ludicrous. The fourth series slayed me.
The only aspect of it which is weak for me - and it's not an insignificant issue - is the depiction of female characters, which is fairly thin and 2D in places except for those characters that think/behave like men (Kima, Marlow's sidekick whose name I forget...)
David Simon is s fucking genius though. Suggest watching The House I Live In and reading The Corner / Homicide if you haven't already.

EachandEveryone · 20/08/2017 22:20

Where was Kima in the last season though compared to the others?

Season 4 broke my heart. Those kids Sad

Also had a soft spot for season 2. Frank Sobotka looks a bit like my dad.

MarmaladeAtkinsX · 20/08/2017 22:31

It's brilliant and I'm not sure Dom West is as good in anything since. I was bereft when we finished it, nothing really filled our 'Wire' shaped hole - have you thought about your next box set?

EachandEveryone · 20/08/2017 22:43

It took me two years to watch it! I'm tempted to start again I've tried the one on Sky about the guy running for mayor? It hasn't really grabbed him. My dad is terminally Ill and The Wire is his favourite show ever so I just sent him The Corners and he said it wasn't a patch on The Wire so if you have any recommendations for an old man who's concentrations not like it was I'd be grateful.

I read tha Dominic Wests finance wouldn't marry him until after The Wire so I imagine Jimmy must've gone to his head. I think his Noah in The Affair is pretty convincing.

I'm not sure what my next box set will be everytine I cat The Sopranos re run on sky my eyes fill up. I loved it so much. I did have a tear at the end of the Wire. Just The hopelessness of it ally poor Dukkie but hurrah for Bubbkes!!

I liked season 2 aswell, I think 2 and 3 are my favourites. Season 4 was hard going at times because it was sad, but also because Marlo and his gang were just horrid to watch, unlike the Barksdale gang.

I loved Omar, Bubbles and Bunny Colvin. My favourite character though was D'Angelo, I felt he was the heart and soul of the first season and I was so angry they killed him off!

milkjetmum · 20/08/2017 22:50

If you like the wire then don't worry about finishing it as you can watch Engrenage next! French police drama, absolutely brilliant. called spiral in UK. May have named my Dd2 after a character

Charlieiscool · 20/08/2017 23:22

I agree, The Wire was outstanding even though subtitles were often necessary. The way the characters of the four boys developed over season 4 and 5, especially poor Randy in the home was so compelling. That was the best aspect of the whole series for me and the utter hopelessness and randomness of life was a powerful message. The writing and acting throughout was up there with The Sopranos. I did like season 5 too and although the lengths Jimmy went to were a bit unlikely (to say the least) I thought the fake journalist getting the awards and praise was believable.

Charlieiscool · 20/08/2017 23:25

Omar was Barack Obama's favourite character aparemtly. A man's got to have a code.
I saw Dominic West in Othello and it was like he was speaking in modern English with just me and him in the room. He is a hugely talented actor.

badbadhusky · 20/08/2017 23:33

I loved it, but its a while since we watched it so I can't add much.

badbadhusky · 20/08/2017 23:37

One of my favourite bits was the police finding out just how erudite Stringer Bell was & their respect for him as an adversary.

I found the education-themed season the hardest, just seeing how hopeless the boys' lives & opportunities were. Seeing Pres thrive as a teacher was great, though.

EachandEveryone · 20/08/2017 23:43

Dominic west talking at the end of the DVD he sounds like Prince Harry! Proper posh. He is a great actor. Omar was my favourite I was gob smacked the way they finished him off.

Best telly ever made. I loved Hamsterdam.

ChocolatePHD · 21/08/2017 06:49

My favourite scene is Brother Mouzone and Omar meeting in the alley to team up. 'Even if I miss I can't miss'.

I also love Bunk and Lester.

The fifth season 'jumped the shark' with the whole fake murder thing.

Dh loves season 2 at the docks the best but I'm not keen on Nicky Sobotka etc. Season 3 is my fave.

Stringer: WELL GET ON WITH IT MOTHERF...................

The only two tv dramas that can ever compare in quality is the sopranos and breaking bad.

EachandEveryone · 21/08/2017 07:23

Breaking Bad just went on abit too long for me. Boardwalk Empire was very good.

OP posts:
MarmaladeAtkinsX · 21/08/2017 07:51

I second Boardwalk Empire - and there's a few faces from the Wire in it.

The only tv binge to come close for me has been The Walking Dead or GOT.

I have the breaking bad series but haveny started it yet - I can only have so many bleak programmes on at a time.

chelseahotel · 21/08/2017 17:05

I gave up the Wire and the Sopranos because I couldn't understand the dialogue. Tried to find sub titles but there were none on Sky at the time. Has this changed?

LurkingHusband · 22/08/2017 15:38

Fuzzy Dunlop SmileSmileSmile

EachandEveryone · 22/08/2017 22:52

They have subtitles on sky now except they aren't showing either of those shows at the moment

Love The Wire! I was so disappointed about Omar...

If you haven't watched it already The Shield is good too. I preferred it to The Wire.
