I don't suppose anyone wants to talk about the Wire to me?

I'm not going to lie I started it three times and gave up. Then I discovered subtitles and my Wire viewing changed and now I get all the fuss. It's up there with The Sopranos for me. I have t binged it. It's taken me a couple of years to get through it I've been so disturbed and drained by it.

I've got two episodes left and no booze and I stopped smoking six months ago. I don't know whether to just watch them now or save one.

Anyways is anyone up for a wire chat when I finishh it? Doesn't Dominic West play the sexy damaged guy well?

Loved The Wire. Great writing. Stringer Bell, just yummy. Dominic West dated Samantha Cameron which puts me off him I must say.

StoorieHoose · 27/08/2017 21:37

If you can get a hold of it watch The Shield. It is utterly utterly brilliant. I've tried the Wire a couple of times and watched the first season and now half way through 2 and I'm a bit meh about it. Will try it with subtitles!

EachandEveryone · 28/08/2017 03:33

Oh you have to start it again with subtitles it's a completely different show.

As an American so funny to see people need subtitles to understand The Wire! But then I put subtitles on when there are a lot of Scottish accents so Blush

EachandEveryone · 28/08/2017 05:17

How did the American accents come across from the English Actors?

OP posts:
newbian · 28/08/2017 05:20

EachandEveryone I knew straight off that McNulty and Carcetti were not American. Over time I suspected Stringer was faking it but wasn't sure if it was that he wasn't American or just didn't have that sort of Baltimore accent.

Interestingly the actor to plays Lester Freamon is American but has lived in the UK for 20+ years!

EachandEveryone · 28/08/2017 06:40

Yes it thought he was English! Carcetti has funny accents in whatever he does donyou watch Game of Thrones it's all over the place. I wonder if Dominic Wests accent improved by the time he was in a The Affair. I find it all fascinating so many good actors in American how come so many of ours are in your shows? It doesn't really happen the other way round does it?

EachandEveryone Britain has a lot of classically trained actors and the US has a lot more content output so higher demand for actors in general. I know a few British actors and they all focus on US accent training and go to the States for auditions because there's so much work over ther.e

EachandEveryone · 28/08/2017 08:51

Ah that makes more sense. I think it would drive me mad though if I sat down to watch something and their accents were all over the place.

I can chat about The Wire for hours Grin

Its a brilliant series I think the best ever and agree season 5 was the weakest but loved Marlo Stanfield he really was terrifying

So many characters I really felt for Dukie and the boys in season 4 which was just heart breaking, Frank Sobotka and my favourite D'Angelo I will never forgive his mother. Also Boodie he did wrong but what chance did he have

At times it is tragically sad but often there is humour as with The Sopranos

I watched it with subtitles and often do with American series also did with The Sopranos

stitchglitched · 28/08/2017 13:20

I don't usually need subtitles for American programmes but The Wire is so fast, uses lots of colloquialisms and keeps its realism by refusing to spell out obvious things for the viewers (CSI did this ALOT). Without the subtitles I was constantly rewinding, especially on first viewing!

Enthusiasm D'Angelo was my absolute favourite. I was so upset they essentially killed him off as a plot device for Stringer Bell's story. He had so much more to offer! And his mother was evil. That seen where he screams 'Where's Wallace at?!!' just makes me bawl.

stitchglitched · 28/08/2017 13:21

Arghh scene not seen!

EachandEveryone · 28/08/2017 23:17

How strange someone from work has just messaged me asking if I want to go to Baltimore to a conference. Don't get excited they won't pay for much of it. I'm not sure I fancy it after watching the wire!

Eachandeveryone perhaps your dad could try Power or Ray Donovan. Has he seen Boardwalk Empire which is brilliant.

affectionincoldclimate · 28/08/2017 23:26

Absolutely and utterly obsessed with it. Watched it 5 times over. Series 5 is the weakest but that's Wire standard weakest which would mean gold plated five stars for everything else out there. Series 4 broke my heart. I just wept and wept. Series 3 are just Shakespearean and series 2 does Greek tragedy like nothing else.

I did subtitles on the first series then I just learned the language. I still casually drop on Wire-isms into conversations.

True dat.
Look the part, be the part!
That's some shameless shit right here.
Sentimental motherfucker
Never on no Sunday!
Motherfucker I could kill you twice.
It's all in the game yo!

So many amazing quotes that capture life's essence too.

Life Jimmy. It's the shit that happens while you wait for things that never come.

Oooh, I'm getting tempted to watch it all again!

Showandtell · 28/08/2017 23:28

Skipped through the thread because I don't want spoilers but had to say SUBTITLES what a genius idea. I will start it for the fourth time!

stitchglitched · 28/08/2017 23:52

DP and I don't say 'shit' anymore, we say 'sheeeeeeee-it'.

ScouseQueen · 29/08/2017 00:03

DH and I spent years after we first watched it asking one another if we wanted a 're-up' when getting drinks. And 'Five-o, five-o' when we saw a police car. It's the best show ever made IMO. But you do need subtitles to get your ear in.

BringMeTea · 30/08/2017 21:16

I have tried many many times to say 'alright' Wire stylee. I just sound like Barrymore and I'm normally good at accents.

weaselwords · 30/08/2017 21:29

"Follow the money" is another that I bet you've all said. It's a favourite at work.

stitchglitched · 31/08/2017 22:40

I've just bought The Shield boxset due to the recommendations on this thread, just finished the pilot. All I can say is wow, the ending of that episode! Hooked already.
