Ripper Street - anyone watching? Spoilers....

I'm watching this on BBC2 and really enjoying it. I didn't have high hopes for it with Drake gone but I'm hooked.
This weeks episode with Nathaniel and Prudence was really good, and showed his "good" side - unfortunately it all went a bit pear shaped later!

Shine seems to be going completely off the rails and obviously an addict - opium maybe?

I'm wondering how it's going to end for Reid - he must come out as the hero but he still has to pay for his crimes.

Anyone else watching?

Oh gosh. How sad. I suppose it was impossible for it be upbeat and back to normal- but still. Beautifully done.

I love that they went 'challenging' in the last episode. All jangly and non linear.

So Reid ends up alone and isolated with only his work obsession to keep him company. Jackson dies and the noose finally catches up with Long Susan. But so good to see Drake again in flashback. Definitely my favourite character and I think Jerome Flynn's portrayal of him has been bloody immense. And bloody.

What a sad ending, I was hoping for a little ray of hope right to the end! What a brilliant experience it has been from first series to last.

I knew it wasn't likely to end up all happy but how sad!

Susan said at one point that everyone had to pay for their crimes and that's what happened.. she went to the noose, Jackson looked like he got away but then died saving 2 girls (thereby redeeming himself?) and Reid is having to atone for his crimes through remaining as Whitechapel's guardian. Matilda knew this sadly, and that he wouldn't go and visit the baby.. this was his eternal punishment.

What a series, I loved every episode.. going to miss it!

I loved seeing Drake back again and thought the flashbacks were fab.

I watched the last episode last night, so couldn't look at this thread until now!

I enjoyed the ending as well. Dove's punishment was worse than hanging I think, just stuck in that cell until he dies.

I actually grew to "like" Nathaniel, he obviously had problems but a good heart underneath it all - apart from killing a few people here and there!

I thought at the very end that Reid was going to visit Matilda and the baby but sadly no.

Really good series and sorry to see it's ended but I suppose it's better to go out while still good.

Yes, will someone please explain the Matilda visiting thing? Why can't be go to visit?

A) does Matilda not want him to visit? Why does she not visit him?

B) Did part of Reid's re-instatement / rehabilitation / pardon include the proviso that he must never leave Whitechapel?

I'm confused!

Clawdy · 26/07/2017 09:26

I had the impression that Reid was psychologically committed to never leaving Whitechapel, it was a sort of obsessive penance. Not sure why Matilda couldn't visit him though. It was sad when he put the photograph resolutely away in the drawer, as if he had to try and get on with living his life alone.

Cannothtinkofaname · 26/07/2017 10:23

I also think it was Reid just couldn't leave Whitechapel, very sad.

What about the foreign man running the pub that Alberline suspected of being The Ripper - when Reid pushed the glass toward him and he caught with his right hand, well he would have as he pushed it that way, IYSWIM! I thought something more would come of that part.
