Ripper Street - anyone watching? Spoilers....

I'm watching this on BBC2 and really enjoying it. I didn't have high hopes for it with Drake gone but I'm hooked.
This weeks episode with Nathaniel and Prudence was really good, and showed his "good" side - unfortunately it all went a bit pear shaped later!

Shine seems to be going completely off the rails and obviously an addict - opium maybe?

I'm wondering how it's going to end for Reid - he must come out as the hero but he still has to pay for his crimes.

Anyone else watching?

Watching every week, but it's not an easy watch. So gory tonight. Poor Nathaniel, he really would be better off dead!

stonecircle · 07/07/2017 01:07

I loved this when it first came out. But I gave up towards the end of the last series. Watched some of the new one but couldn't carry on because of the dog fighting. Just too much for me. I'm very unsqueamish about most things but couldn't handle that.

I also find the plots too drawn out and turgid. And why do they all talk in that very strange way?!

Clawdy · 07/07/2017 22:27

I actually love that Dickens type dialogue, but the violence is becoming more difficult to watch.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 10/07/2017 23:20

Thought it was brilliant tonight

Cannothtinkofaname · 11/07/2017 08:02

I haven't seen last nights yet - looking forward to watching it tonight.

Interesting the way the two young policemen are almost reversing their original roles - Drummond is now weak and despicable, and the other one is trying to do the right thing.

Cannothtinkofaname · 13/07/2017 10:21

I thought that Clawdy, although do you think Drummond thought he was doing the "right" thing?

We have to watch with sub-titles though, just can't understand some of what they're saying, especially Shine!

Poor old Robyn, although we did think that would happen.

I'm wondering how it will all end, surely Reid must still end up the good guy, although don't know how.

And Dove doesn't mind getting his hands dirty does he!

I loved this series, watched all episodes on Amazon Prime as I couldn't wait a week between episodes. Agree this episode was a bit gory, but I love Reid and they way they all talk.

deadringer · 14/07/2017 15:19

I used to love it but i stopped watching it when he found his daughter then left the police department. It just seemed to get more and more ludicrous, all that stuff with long Susan and the train crash etc. I miss the old team of Reid, his sidekick and the Dr, I would have watched it forever with the trio solving different crimes every week.

Clawdy · 18/07/2017 22:51

Tonight's was gripping from start to finish, and not as violent as usual! Looking forward to next week's finale.

RJnomore1 · 18/07/2017 22:52

Shit I totally forgot about this is there somewhere I can catch up with the series from the start?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/07/2017 00:25

Nathaniel took Robin Sumner's body to Susan but how did he know where she was?

And how do Susan and Nathaniel know each other? Was he just a customer at the brothel?

I thought Monday night's episode was terrific.

Cannothtinkofaname · 19/07/2017 07:33

Deadringer - I know what you mean but I just went along with it!

Lass - I don't know how Nathaniel knew where Susan was but I think they know each other from, do you remember when she was first on the run - she was sentenced to hang but the Captain and a doctor helped her escape?

She hid with a merchant near the docks supplying all sorts. Nathaniel was his "heavy" and they struck up a friendship then _ I think!

I loved this weeks episode, was so gripping and poor Thatcher, I didn't expect that.

Last one ever next week so should tie up all the loose ends. And I loved the old inspector returning!

Yes, thanks.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 19/07/2017 10:14

He had the map of Doves house from when Susan got Connor back. It was on the back of a flyer for the theatre.

Brilliant episode, poor Thatcher, I was really warming to him. Sad

Cannothtinkofaname · 19/07/2017 10:49

Oh yes, of course he did. Well done Sinister.

Yes Thatcher had really turned into one of the good guys. When he went off alone me and OH were both saying oh no!

OP posts:
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/07/2017 13:14

Oh well done Sinister and the warehouseman was Abel Croker.

I know, poor Thatcher .

SinisterBumFacedCat · 19/07/2017 13:17

I pay too much attention to Ripper Street, I'm a bit of a nerd for it! DP is banned from talking when it's on, mainly so I can decipher the language! It's true what someone up thread said about Jebediah Shine being mostly illegible, I could only really understand him saying "Old Jebediah Shine".

Cannothtinkofaname · 19/07/2017 13:27

We have to use the sub-titles Sinister!

Oh yes, Abel Croker. What happened to him, did Nathaniel kill him?

OP posts:
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/07/2017 14:05

Augustus killed Abel- from a plot recap

Croker guides Dove through the sewers to a location where Nathaniel is chained to a wall

Abel tells Dove that Nathaniel needs to be put out of his misery. Initially, Dove is hesitant, but he eventually agrees. When Croker attempts to do the deed, Dove intervenes and stabs the old man

Cannothtinkofaname · 19/07/2017 14:35

That rings a bell now Lass, thanks.

A couple of things - what is it that Dove is drinking? When he was mixing it with powder I thought he was going to poison Nathaniel with it but he drank it himself.

And the theatre lady (cant remember her name!) what do you think that rash on her neck is?

Matilda's a funny little thing isn't she! Never sure how old she's supposed to be but her and Drummer were "courting!"

OP posts:
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/07/2017 17:11

I wondered about what he was drinking. I assume an opiate of some sort.

Mimi is theatre lady- and yes is the rash significant? I assume it is - I did wonder given her past involvement with Jackson and given his colourful past if it might possibly be secondary stage syphilis?

Clawdy · 19/07/2017 20:31

Wasn't Dove drinking some kind of drug to control his medical condition?

Clawdy · 19/07/2017 20:32

Sorry - thinking of Jedediah Stone.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/07/2017 20:38

Jedediah was injecting morphine for the pain in his head from the beating he took from Drake. He was also taking cocaine to counteract the drowsiness the morphine would cause.
