Couldn't find a thread about this already. I read a review of this in the Guardian today and saw it will be on TV on C4 on Sunday.

I'm really looking forward to watching it even though the book is so disturbing. And the reviews of the show have been very positive so far. Anyone else?

No spoilers please for anyone with fancy shmancy access to US episodes (even if we know what's happening 'cause we've read the book...)

I AM SO EXCITED!
And happy to see a thread here.
I very recently read it for the first time after seeing it recommended eleventy billion times on a thread in Chat.
I came here to share my excitement about the series on C4 and you all got here first.
I'm very relieved to see its getting good reviews. I've avoided reading anything else in case of spoilers.

I've found my people Grin

Signing in. So excited this is coming to a channel I have access to! :o :o

Cakes I think if you know the source material then you'll know that certain parts are reasonably graphic in terms of action - the camera does not cut away from this a la floaty curtains etc but in the main (apart from one scene so far) everyone remains clothed

ellenanora5 · 26/05/2017 14:28

I was going to start a thread just now and saw this one, I read it a long time ago and I'm really looking forward to watching it, I resisted the other threads in the hope that we could see it.

I'll check in after the first episode

Hello fellow Master Chef fan Cagliostro Smile

Stormtreader · 26/05/2017 14:41

I've already been watching it, up to about episode 7 I think.
Its really really good, I definitely recommend it.

TheSecondOfHerName · 26/05/2017 20:25

I have seen 3 episodes and have episode 4 ready to watch, but will be watching at Channel 4 pace from episode 5 onwards.

TheSecondOfHerName · 26/05/2017 20:30

The three episodes I've seen would probably be a 15 certificate. There's a bit of violence and occasional strong language, but the disturbing ideas are often implied rather than actually shown.

Elendon · 27/05/2017 09:53

Really looking forward to this adaptation. I've read the book several times and seen the film twice.

What I find disturbing is that Atwood never considered it a dystopian SF novel. The events that happen have taken place in the world. Frightening that rights can be eroded in such a way (that's not a spoiler).

ellenanora5 · 28/05/2017 21:00

Just a quick reminder everyone its starting now Smile

AmIthatbloodycold · 28/05/2017 21:00

Ok. Come to this late but I'm going to watch

MrTumblesbitch · 28/05/2017 21:10

I've never read the book and know very little of what it's about (I know, I feel bad!) am watching now though with interest!

Ineedagoodusername · 28/05/2017 21:47

Oh goodness this is very good but very dark and disturbing. Where has her daughter been taken too ?

Fairylea · 28/05/2017 21:53

Gosh this is so poweful, especially in the current political climate.

The book is flooding back to me as I watch it.

The daughter in the book is sent to live with another family. You don't find out what happens to her beyond that, but I don't know if the series will be true to the book.

MrTumblesbitch · 28/05/2017 21:59

Incredibly sinister - especially given what's happening in the world at the moment.

Ineedagoodusername · 28/05/2017 22:01

DH has just said "this is some fucked up shit"

intheknickersoftime · 28/05/2017 22:03

I'm watching it now, I can hardly breathe. It's so terrifying.

anotherpoisonprince · 28/05/2017 22:05

Absolutely loving this. As is my adult DD who hasn't read the book.

RJnomore1 · 28/05/2017 22:12

It's so scary because it's possible.
Groups of women are apparently dressing as handmaids to protest against American anti abortion legislation.

That first episode was brilliantly done.

intheknickersoftime · 28/05/2017 22:14

I don't think I've felt so moved by a television programme in a long time. It's such a remarkable first episode. Truly brilliant.

App1eCakes · 28/05/2017 22:19

Very good. Just watching the portrayal of the mother & daughter and knowing what's going to happen to them, made me want to cry.

DH thinks it will be too much for DD - especially the "particution" scene.

OP posts:
Ineedagoodusername · 28/05/2017 22:36

What's the particution scene dare I ask?

intheknickersoftime · 28/05/2017 22:40

Well it's when the Handmaid's are forced to execute a man accused of raping a handmaid. Again, the violence and horror is implied through terrific acting and a really sinister build up to it.

intheknickersoftime · 28/05/2017 22:41

The whole group of them beat him to death in a frenzy, fuelled by anger at there subjugation.
