Couldn't find a thread about this already. I read a review of this in the Guardian today and saw it will be on TV on C4 on Sunday.

I'm really looking forward to watching it even though the book is so disturbing. And the reviews of the show have been very positive so far. Anyone else?

No spoilers please for anyone with fancy shmancy access to US episodes (even if we know what's happening 'cause we've read the book...)

I would love it if they had the Martha's story line in it. Which would be stretching out the book, it's alluded to but not expanded.

What is the story of the Marthas? It's too long since I read the book; I don't remember.

I thought this was a wonderful first episode.

Oh my god, I am obssessed with this series. I've watched 7or 8 episodes on the kodi box, and it just keeps getting better. Its up there with GOT for me. Grin

It must be me! Or else I wasn't in the mood for relentless misery and horror. I have read several Margaret Atwood novels and enjoyed them but never fancied that one. I have only seen the first episode so from what you all say it should brighten up. Will watch the second which is recorded. Am I the only one who wasn't desperate to see the second episode?[sceptical]

What just happened there to Ofglen??? What did they do to her?!

I thought this week's episode was going off-message with Mrs Waterford being so nice, and then the reveal of her real character at the end was a good turn.

FGM I suspect Sad

FairfaxAikman · 11/06/2017 22:33

The aunt says "you won't want what you can't have" and adds that she will still be able to have children, so it's fairly implicit that it's FGM, I think.

Allabitmuchisntit · 11/06/2017 23:46

Frighteningly plausable isn't it? I love it.

TryingNotToWaddle · 11/06/2017 23:58

So plausible! Especially the explanation that their rights started to diminish as a response to terrorist attacks.

I think Mrs Waterford was probably a nice person in the past - but now she is also living in a nightmare world. Her position in this society could change very quickly too so she needs her handmaid to produce a child for her. She has no purpose in this world at present.

I watched Selma recently where there's a pivotal scene set on a bridge - the protest in this week's episode really echoed that Selma march (for me). Especially when the violence erupted. I wondered if they were trying to draw a parallel between matching for black rights and now in this situation, women's rights.

This epsiode is still playing on my mind, the awful FGM, it's becoming difficult viewing.
