Box set recommendations - 30 minutes long?

dotty2 · 09/03/2017 09:37

I hardly ever get to watch more than 30 minutes of TV a night - usually it's so late I fall asleep if I try to watch anything longer. But all the great TV people always recommend seems to be 45mins - 1 hour per episode. Obviously I can and do watch half a longer programme, but I usually have to search through to work out where I got to before I fell asleep. V frustrating. So any recommendations for perfect, bite sized TV? I have Amazon Prime, I Player and Netflix, ITV and C4 on demand etc.

Comedy, drama, documentaries all good - I've got pretty wide ranging tastes but don't like anything super violent, or where I can't hear the dialogue (I'm looking at you, The Wire)

Detectorists is only 30 mins per episode and is one of my favourite programmes of the last ten years. I love it so much!

Thank you - will give that a look. It's interesting, isn't it, how there seems to be a bit of a rule in TV that drama has to be 45mins plus and comedy can be shorter?

Catastrophe

DollyParsnip · 09/03/2017 12:13

Grace and Frankie is just brilliant, about 30 mins per episode and it's funny with a really good cast. 2 series on Netflix with a third coming at the end of the month. Smile

HollyBollyBooBoo · 09/03/2017 12:21

Catastrophe although there aren't many so it'll only last a little while. Best tv series for about a decade!

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/03/2017 12:27

Loved Grace and Frankie and liked Catastrophe.

Brooklyn 99 is brilliant. As is the US Office, and the right length for you, but it's just disappeared off Netflix, though may be on other sources.

Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner, both on 4OD I think.

Good point about comedy being shorter!

Love, which is on Netflix. Pretty funny and full of quirky characters; very easy to watch.

For a little trip down memory lane, all of Absolutely Fabulous and Fawlty Towers are on Netflix too!

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/03/2017 12:30

What's Catastrophe on?

YessicaHaircut · 09/03/2017 12:30

Yy to US Office too if you can find it!

Life in pieces

One of the best things on Amazon prime - I love love this show

Santa Clara diet or something like that on Netflix (funny zombie)

Love on Netflix I think is short too

Life in Pieces is perfect. It's Amazon prime. It's a 20 mins show split in to 4 seperate topics but all about the same family. It's hilarious and highly addictive

GreyStars · 09/03/2017 12:31

I've seen catastrope on Amazon I think... but defiantly on one of the free view channel too. On sky full box set and C4 maybe?

Loads of good recommendations on here, great thread!

Girls is longer I think? But very different.

dotty2 · 09/03/2017 12:50

Brilliant, thanks so much for the suggestions. Watching Catastrophe at the moment, and like it a lot. What's the thing that Sharon Hogan did before - Pulling? People often say that's good but it's not on either Netflix or Amazon.

I am going to give Life in Pieces a try first. I'm intrigued. Any non-comedy recommendations?

Bear in mind lots of 45 min- 1 hr shows have ad breaks, so if you fast forward it brings the time down significantly.

However you have to have recorded it to be able to fast forward the ads, if you watch on demand they won't let you fast forward iirc. Do you have a tv box which records (sky plus, freeview plus etc)?

dotty2 · 09/03/2017 13:31

Yes, have freeview and a recorder, but not Sky. I know what you mean about fast forwarding through the ad breaks, but even so an hour long show is a bit too long most nights (am making myself sound very old and feeble, aren't I?)
